So does Bennett look like a more interesting UFA this summer?
Depends what he's asking for. 20 goal 50 point guy could ask for a lot in FA with the huge cap increase happening. I think I'd maybe go as high as 5.5-6 mil for 5 years. We also got to remember Knies provides the same production and will probably be asking for around the same.

I think you could make a couple decent lines with some grit with:

Matthews, marner, Nylander, Knies, McMann, Bennett

Bennett has been pretty consistent going on 4 years now.
And good enough to be on Team Canada.
Clarkson was signed off one outlier season.

Anyway, I know you're half joking, and half "it would be so Leafy."
For some reason I thought Clarkson actually played on team Canada in a WC before we signed him! Must have been thinking of Jamal Mayers or somebody haha.

He's a player I'd have to see the contract before I'd make a call

I think he's the sort of player who gets wildly overpaid in FA and a lot of GM's have a ton of money burning a hole in there pockets

For sure. Matthews looked very good when they moved Hughes off his line and had the Tkachuk brothers there. Then I think they had Guentzel after M Tkachuk got hurt. If they finally put Matthews, Marner and Nylander on 3 different lines we could have 3 damn good scoring lines.

Sure, but he’s going to get $7-8 mil, and often players who play his physical style break down earlier than others. If there was a way to sign him and Tavares for $10-11 in cap hits, with deferred contracts, you do it though.

1- should consider florida will not resign him when they will have all the money they need for this

2-Still have 30 other team ( with at least 7,5M available) in NHL and probably a lot of team who will send him an offer.

So the % to sign in Toronto is pretty low and outside of him, i don't see any other option to replace JT so that's why leafs will resign JT

Was impressed with Parayko during the tourney, would love the Leafs to get him.
I believe he would make a great partner for Rielly, and allow us to move OEL back to his left side, and push everyone down one spot. A move like that, could really help the D core. I think we'd have to go cheaper on a C though, someone like Krebs.. but I could get behind that.

Our Leafs should have found a way to acquire him years ago.
He's never really been available though, and he really struggled after the back injuries. He's come back into his own now..

With the increase in cap, it certainly does look like they will have the room to extend him. You'd have to think it's highly probable he stays in Florida.

With the 4 nations coming to a close I don't know why the Leafs wouldn't set themselves up to at least take a run at McDavid in the summer of 2026. Will Tavares just not sign 1x7M? Why not go to July 1, not sign Tavares, take a run at other UFAs and then come back on July 2nd and offer Tavares the remainder of the cap space (could be 1x10M).

1x7m is the way to do this and keep the cap open for McDavid.

If there is mutual interest, you'd be crazy not to try to make it work. But if he walks from the Panthers, it's probably because he wants a big chunk of change and I'd be surprised if the Leafs can make it work unless they make some serious changes.

I think I'd be staying away from Bennett. The cost of outbidding other teams, plus those types of players, tends to age like milk.

They need to find their own player like Bennett at the point he was at in Calgary.

I would agree if the Leafs had a long runway here but when you look at the roster construction they're like 3-4 years away from a rebuild anyway.
