A top 6 LW with his qualities are not easy to find though

Mantha, Greenway and Bennett (C) are there in UFA but Greenway has like 3 goals this year.
Frederic is much more intriguing than Greenway and Mantha. He is having a down year but he'll be very young for a UFA and he scored 17 and 18 goals the last 2 years. Similarly Mangiapane would intrigue me over Mantha and Greenway. I am not saying Frederic/Mangiapane=Knies but Frederic/Mangiapane+Dobson might be better than Knies and Ekblad (as a generic UFA RD).

I love Trent Frederic, I would totally sign him but he's more of a 3rd line consideration vs a top 6 presence as you've said.

So some comments about his suspect defence?
So what is Dobson's strengths beyond offense?

I gather he isn't very physical?
By the numbers (Evolving Hockey GAR) he grades out better defensively than all Leafs defenseman except Tanev over the last 2 years. He was a disaster defensively (by the numbers) up until last season. The Athletic's model has him at 88th percentile defensively this season - unfortunately they removed historical metrics from the charts.

Is that hard to do, or is that more indicative of the Leafs defense corps?

If that like saying player X is better than Timmins?

Dobson is not that bad defensively and still young. A lot of his defensive issues could be correct with experience and time, it's not a big deal. He having the mobility, good positionning but he need to learn to use his body in a better way.

I think people just overreating Dobson defensive issue, overal Dobson in my mind is better in the defensive end than by exemple Roman Josi or Quinn Hugues. He's not a kind of Rielly or even a Hamilton and some people here look like they thing he is...

Okay, but does that make him unique?

Like saying McMann outscores (goals) everyone on Anaheim?
I bring up McCabe because McCabe is universally viewed as a strong defensive player by the Leafs. Dobson grades out well ahead of him defensively over the last 2 seasons. That provides some context for Leafs fans to Dobson's defensive impact.

Did I misconstrue your question?

No I think you have it.

Just wanted to know league wide, how he compares.

Leafs defense is more about offense.
Looking at the Leafs defensive corps kind of gives it away.

League wide he ranks 64th in even strength defensive impact (evolving hockey) over the last 2 seasons. So on the very edge of top pair for defensive impact. He is 26th in overall impact over that same time frame, so low-end 1D. This season he is 29th for ES D and 93rd overall.

The Athletic has him at 88th percentile for defensive impact this season. They don’t show percentile by overall impact.

Put in simple terms - both models that I value have Dobson as a top 30 NHL by defensive impact.

So he's being re-signed by the Islanders, and not being traded.

Next!

From the outside looking in it appears the Islanders could deal from a position of strength (RD) to bolster a position of need (top 6F). If Dobson gets 8M+ the Isles will be spending 18M+ on RD.

His name wouldn’t be out there if he was a lock to re-sign.

Lou could be gone, but Stevens and Niedermayer were key players to him, along with Brodeur.

I don't think he's letting him go.

And his name being "out there" is likely just two mirrors facing each other.

Considering Lou still had egg on his face for letting Toews go for nothing, is he really in a rush to let this young, top 4 RHD go?

Not holding my breathe on it, unless it’s a gross overpay.

Lou can’t have another screw up on this.

I'm not saying it's true. I'm just telling what I heard.

Ianturnedbull's Elite Rumors

" Daily Faceoff's Frank Seravalli released a trade matchmaker piece in the spirit of Valentine's Day, and suggested a deal involving the heated rivals.

Seravalli could see the Canadiens trading third-line center Jake Evans to the Maple Leafs in exchange for a 2025 second-round pick, originally of the Florida Panthers, and prospect Roni Hirvonen.

They've been linked to Evans for most of the season, along with Yanni Gourde, Scott Laughton and Luke Kunin."

I'd need a real nice extension attached to that to feel okay with it but this year aside, his production has been 4C level.

I'd be wary of any extension given his extremely elevated point totals. If his ask was anywhere close to commensurate with the player he's been for the first 5 seasons of his career they'd probably already have signed him.

I probably pull the trigger, I’d hope an extension were to follow.

If he does screw up though does it really matter for him at this point? Dude has maybe ten years left to live, he should just go and spend it with some family instead of running a hockey team that's going nowhere. He's already accomplished the biggest feats in this league as a GM.

Dont think Lou care about it...

For me just meaning if NYI trade Dobson, you will need to give wanted asset and a big power foward is something team looking for.

A bunch of pick and prospect is not what a team want for a 25 #1 D unstead the guy put pressure and don't want to resign like Tkachuk with Calgary and even there he didn't been traded for pick or prospect but 2 etablished top 6 top 4 dman

Maybe his family are a bunch of jerks and he secretly doesn’t like them? :P
