Trades & Free Agency Thread: 2024-2025 - Trade Deadline Approaches

Combo Deals

1. Ryan O'Reilly - (4.5M per for 3 years) + Luke Schenn - (50% retained - 1.375M per for 2 years)

2. Brad Marchand - (50% retained - 3.062M for 1 year) + Charlie Coyle - (50 retained - 2.625M per for 2 years) or Trent Frederic - (50% retained - 1.15M for 1 year)

3. Dylan Cozens - (7.1M per for 6 years) + Peyton Krebs - (1.45M per for 2 years) or Jordan Greenway - (50% retained - 1.5M for 1 year)

4. Scott Laughton - (3M per for 2 years) + Rasmus Ristolainen - (50% retained - 2.55M per for 3 years)

5. Brandon Tanev - (50% retained - 1.75M for 1 year) or Yanni Gourde - (50% retained - 2.583M for 1 year) + Jamie Oleksiak - (50% retained - 2.3M per for 2 years)

6. Ryan Donato - (50% retained - 1M for 1 year) + Connor Murphy - (50% retained - 2.2M per for 2 years)

7. Jake Evans - (50% retained - 850K for 1 year) or Christian Dvorak - (50% retained - 2.225M for 1 year) + David Savard - (50% retained - 1.75M for 1 year)

Combo deals have been common in recent years with Toronto. Are there any other good potential combo deals out there that have potential to squeeze under the salary cap?

I wonder if Knies ends up agreeing to a short bridge deal so that he can take advantage of the rising cap on his next deal.

I really like Knies, and he's played well this year. The question I think he, and his people have to be asking, is what is his potential. Is this year the peak for him? If he continues his scoring pace, he's going to put up 30/31 goals, 55 points... which is really solid.

If his team thinks he has more to give, let's say 70 points in the next two years, wouldn't it make sense to bet on that increased production, and rising cap, to really cash in?

We can argue all we want about whether he's a $5.5 to $7 million guy at 55 points... but if the cap goes up as much as they are suggesting, and he's a 70 point guy in a couple of years, what does he get paid?

From a Leafs perspective, if you can sign him LT, at the lower end of that $5.5 - $7 mil range, this has the potential to be a bargain in a few years.

I think the Buffalo deal would be Cozens OR Krebs + Greenway @50%.

Technically you could do a B. Schenn (50%) + Parayko.... though I highly doubt any team would want to retain on a player for this year, +3... and that would cost a ton.

Gudas @ 50% + Zegras works, if Domi + Timmins goes the other way (as the roster players.. obviously ++)

Of course, with the notation of.. who knows if the other team is interested in moving these players... they just fit our needs, and they appear to be teams that are about to make changes.

I'm a big time Dubas hater but Holl was excellent value at that point in time. Holl-Muzzin was the Leafs shutdown line for the entire 2020-21 season and Holl still had 2 years left at 2M. I think most teams would take a 21 minute/night 29 year old RHD with 2 years at 2M over a 25 year old LW with a career high 14G/35P with 1 year remaining at 2.9M.

Unfortunately Holl's season was a apparition and McCann broke out immediately.
Fair enough, but it seemed like McCann was a need more than Holl was a need. Holl already showed that without a better player beside him, he resembled an AHL caliber defenseman.

starting to think this deadline ends up like last year - Mid-level assets for mid-level players. Minor upgrades and no serious “game changers” are brought in.
Yep other peoples crap for our crap
I mean dubas thought this team would have won by now
I say stand pat and let the chips fall
Then TED ROGERS can buy MSLE and let the pelley bring in hos own guy

That's fine... but we still had a healthy Muzzin, whom we expected to continue to make Holl look useful at the expansion. Had we lost Holl, our RHD would have been just Liljegren, and there weren't that many reasonable RHD available in Free Agency. McCann really was a winger, and at that point, keeping a RHD who was useful beside Muzzin, was in fact more important than another winger... it just turned out to be the wrong move, and Muzzin got injured exposing Holl.

Some thought we should have protected Dermott over Holl.... and many figured that it would be Kerfoot that would get claimed.

Maybe, Gudas at full pop and Ryan Strome with 50% retention to bring his cap hit down to 2.5M per for 3 years might be a good one to add. Strome has been mentioned by the insiders. It looks fairly similar in value to the Philly proposal with Ristolainen and Laughton.

This highlights the problem with casual hockey fans who just bring up meaningless stats without context.

He had Selke votes last year!! I think he will be just fine. Just plan to surround him with reasonable talent, puck possession and heaviness.

I sound like a broken record. Separate 35/16. Get 88 on the third line with Laughton and McMann. Spread scoring!!!!

Knies Matthews Domi
Xxx JT Marner
McMann Laughton(example) Nylander
Support that ...

If Paccioretty is good enough for the 2nd. line today, he is tomorrow.

Knies - Matthews - Domi
Paccioretty - Tavares - marner
McMann - 2nd.LineTalent - Nylander
2 PK's

Play the top 3 lines equal minutes, PP time, and situations where you stack the Top 3 Forwards.

That's a possibility too... Zegras trade rumours still persist though... and I do think there is more to his game that will come out once traded. The kid is just 23, and if he can just get back to the 60 point C, that would be a better pickup than a 31 year old mediocre C.

What is he, 21? There is no way this is his peak.

Laughton had ONE 5th place Selke Vote. Let's not get carried away here. That's hardly the ringing endorsement we pretend it is.

Domi + Kampf + futures (Cowan/Minten/1st ?)
For
Zibanejad (@ 6/6.5M)

Finally find Willy a C, they’ll be on top line for Sweden together.

Not sure why you made votes plural. He had 1 5th place vote for an award with ~200 voters. The 50th percentile HFboards poster could be in the PWHA and get a vote if they wanted to work for 50k/year. A 5th place vote from 1 voter (Ryan Kennedy) means nothing.

Asking for retention for 5 years, plus this one, seems like a tall order. Is Zbad on the market, after they picked up Miller? Zbad has 8 points in his last 5 games, so something seems to be working there now. I thought it was Kreider they were more interested in moving.

Not that I think it will happen based on what they are selling but one player the Flyers would really covet would be Cowan since they have Bonk and Barkey.

It's a calm Wednesday afternoon...how about an interesting hypothetical...

Tuch is a VERY good Knies comparable and that gets us to around 5.5-5.65M range for 6-7 years.

If Knies turns down 5.65M x 6 years from Toronto...but NYI would accept him or him and a small plus for Noah Dobson...where are you at on it?

It's just for fun.
