Treliving won't want to take anyone off the roster other than guys like Robertson or Holmberg, so I think the more likely outcome is that he trades for guys in the mold of B Schenn, Gourde, etc., where the price will be a lower end prospect and a draft pick.

If the price for Schenn is low, that’s an obvious target.

Rielly is expendable and should be moved for a Knies replacement if you get Dobson. Alas might be asking too much of Tre to do before the TDL.
NMC aside, I'd have to know what that looks like but I'm hesitant to agree off the top. The Maple Leafs are not in a strong position to remove playoff players from the lineup, regardless of early season hiccups.

Given our history, we should keep the things that work, and delete the things that don't. That goes for Keefe (gone), Domi, Reavo (money immaterial), Woll, our D build, prioritizing Matty and Willy goals, etc.

We have to make sure we go forward without going backwards, through the brief 100% hockey we get.

Let's discuss further if we acquire Dobson.

I guess if you shift the goalposts enough, you can get close to the net. Wingers bring less than other positions and they bring even less when you have more of them. They are as impactful as that position can be…. Which is still the least of all the positions. Letang has on 8 occasions been a top-10 defender according to Norris voters. Rielly has done that once. The whole point of this discussion is about building a winner under the cap. Their core of forwards took up how much cap space? As I said, they are the closest in terms of roster composition, but their cap was much better managed. I’ve said it many times before - any roster composition can theoretically win the cup, but the salary cap requires that money be spent wisely. The law of diminishing returns applies to all positions, and especially at the less important ones. Unless Marner is going to take a discount, it’s not smart. We’ll be forever at a disadvantage in terms of roster building.
The only one shifting goalposts here is you. You demand an example that serves no actual purpose, you get it, and then it's bad excuse after bad excuse to dismiss it. I don't care about career top 10 Norris votes. Rielly has shown an ability to put up a Letang caliber performance, and Letang wasn't even there for one of the wins. We are capable of getting the defensive performance they got while keeping our core.

This is all pretty simple. Cup winners come in all different shapes and sizes. There is no formula. But if there is a common trend, it's that successful teams invest in their best players, regardless of position. Marner is one of the best players in the league, and really important to all aspects of our team.

Because despite your claims, wingers can be massively impactful, especially when they are a high end, two way, all situations player. There is enough room for two elite wingers on a team, and superstars are better cap value than the mid tier UFAs we'd try and replace him with. With the cap about to skyrocket, this is a great time to lock in a superstar, and we'll have space to surround the core. Re-signing Marner is the smart move.

If you disagree, I don't care. Best to move on, because I am never going to agree with your one dimensional perspective on team building.

If Rielly would get you a Knies replacement if Knies gets you Dobson, then why not just trade Rielly for Dobson? :sarcasm:
