You are right unless they are trading with a non-playoff team or a team like Vancouver, looking to move a player or a team looking for an upgrade. The Rangers and Canes gave up roster players for Miller and Ranta.

That depends what you want to acquire? Hertl with 1.3M retention for 6 more years was traded for a 2025 1st round pick, Edstrom (#32 2023) and other mid/late round picks I don't remember. Is Cozen more valuable than that? If Buffalo doesn't want futures, they will eliminate a lot of teams. All it takes is creativity and a good match.

All different levels of value depending on the other team needs/wants, and obviously what is coming back

2025 2nd, 2026 1st, + 4 prospects worth between 1sts and 3rds is what our future pool base realistically is.

Now if any player we are targetting is highly sought out, we likely lose bidding war as our prospects aren't very high ceiling besides Cowa maybe and our 2 picks are later in R2 and likelt R1 in 2026.

Not having one this year stinks, but Toronto did trade this year first, two years ago, I don't think it's going to be as big of an issue. a 2nd + B/C prospect will get you anyone better then what we currently have at 3C like Bjugstad or Donato.

I don't see Toronto making a big in season trade for a center with term like Middlestadt or Cozens anyways. Makes more sense that those would be off season additions knowing the full cap picutre. Those are the type of players with term Toronto is willing to move 1sts and top prospects for.

Nobody said they was desesperate to trade him mid-season but i can see a team like by exemple Montreal who not really in race for playoff making a step for Cozens.

I’d offer him 4 years, 13M AAV. First 2 years NMC, last 2 years limited NTC.

I’d also offer 8 years 12.5M AAV. First 4 years NMC, last 4 years limited NTC.

If neither of those contracts are good enough for him I’d let him walk.

Seravelli says they want a return that helps them now. They should be trying to get Petey out of Vancouver.

If Vancouver wants him and I think they do, this is the deal that gets done and no one will offer a better returning player.

It would be an automatic yes from Buffalo and entirely Vancouver making the offer.

I think Cozens will be a Canuck well before the TDL.

Unless Toronto offers Knies, which would be mind-numbingly stupid, we are not legitimate contenders on Cozens.

2018 - probably early in the 2018-19 season when STL was last in the NHL and Nylander was unsigned. There was a lot of rumors that everyone on STL was for sale early that season.

Had they not signed Tavares, they could've had the three 3 boys + Pietrangelo.

Why would you only commit top dollar for max term? He’ll be signing at age 28, it would be more beneficial to not have him signed into his mid 30s. Shorter term is better for the Leafs at this point in time.

Imagine the Leafs only signed Tavares for 4 years. Even if they had re-signed him for the last 3 years it wouldn’t have been at 11M.

You’re assuming he’s the same player at 32. What is the precedent for a 32 year old player signing for 13-14% of the cap for 8 years?

He wants $14mx8. Reminder, walking for nothing means we have $22m in cap space to replace him and Tavares. The chicken littles are in full force. He's helped us win 1 playoff series in 8 years FFS and even then I give more credit to Vasi.

Curious what the asking price on Dylan Cozens is. I am not a huge fan of throwing away premium assets for rentals once again, especially with the team's rather underwhelming performance overall this year, but, adding a twenty-three year old with term like Cozens would be a great move for the present and future. It will be tough because of (a) the predicament of adding his $7.1M to this year's team (although long-term it isn't really an issue, especially with the cap set to rise), and (b) the fact that lots of teams with considerably more assets are pining for him. However, a super interesting target to be sure.
