Trades & Free Agency Thread: 2024-2025 - Trade Deadline Approaches

Drew O'Connor was one of the players I was hoping the Leafs could get. And they got Pettersson. Not sure why the Canucks did this but some very good value if they can keep both, they basically switched up JT for good 3 NHLers and a good prospect. And they dumped garbage. The Penguins are fully into sell mode now.

It's a nice little deal for Dubas
Essentially a 1st and a 3rd, plus depending on the market, can probably flip Heinen for a late pick before his contract expires

Leafs will probably call about Desharnais I suspect. He's been terrible and he's overpaid, but it's just what I expect from Treliving.

Drew O'Connor and Marcus Petersson is some tidy work I gotta say.

It's pretty bad if they walk as UFAs though.

I don't know why everyone is so quick to write off Yanni Gourde after this injury .. it's 5-7 weeks. That's a month before the end of the season.

We could probably get him for pennies on the dollar.

All I'm saying is If it comes down to Gourde vs Kunin at the same acquisition price, I'm taking Gourde all day long.

As long as he is just a throw in asset.

Gourde isn't going to elevate any team, he's just another depth player.

We have enough broken down players. Putting our eggs into that basket makes very little sense even if he's practically free. He'll need time to rehab and get back into game shape and before you know it, it's playoffs time. If all Treliving can do is trade for a player that just had surgery, then he made his bed.

Nah, we're not that exciting

We're going to pay market price for a couple of meh depth players and pretend it's going to make a difference

How does a team with resources like this available to it achieve these types of results and a piss poor prospect pool to?

man this team is hard work

It's obviously still a ways away, but with a projected $95.5 million salary cap next year, I'm curious about what people think about the following cap allocation for the 2025-2026 season.

Extensions
Mitch Marner: $12.75 million per
John Tavares: $7.5 million per
Matthews Knies: $4.0 million per

Note: The Knies contract would be a 2 year bridge deal, with the idea in mind that the cap is expected to go up aggressively and that with Marner and Tavares extended, he could put himself in line for a big extension at the end of the bridge deal.

Center
C1 Auston Matthews: $13,250,000
C2 John Tavares: $7,500,000
C3 Addition: $4,000,000
C4 Fraser Minten: $817,000

Right Wing
RW1 Mitch Marner: $12,750,000
RW2 William Nylander: $11,500,000
RW3 Max Domi: $3,7500,000
RW4 Steven Lorentz: $1,000,000

Left Wing
LW1 Matthew Knies: $4,000,000
LW2 Addition: $3,000,000
LW3 Bobby McMann: $1,350,000
LW4 Easton Cowan: $905,000

13th F Nikita Grebenkin: $875,000

Defense
LD1 Morgan Rielly: $7,500,000
LD2 Jake McCabe: $4,510,000
LD3 Simon Benoit: $1,350,000

RD1 Chris Tanev: $4,500,000
RD3 Oliver Ekman-Larsson: $3,500,000
RD3 Addition: $2,000,000

7th Defenseman: $1,000,000

Goalies
Joseph Woll: $3,670,000
Anthony Stolarz: $2,500,000

Total Cap: $95,227,000
this would not be great and would fix none of the problems we have this year, C depth, scoring depth, usefulness of bottom 6 and scoring from the backend.

Domi needs to be gone.
Rielly needs to step up or ship/bought out
Tavares at maximum of something starting with a 3, or go enjoy Chicago
If Mitch doesn't perform in the playoffs, enjoy Columbus.

Not all needs to be fixed in UFA. Teams will be looking to move on from guys so they can blow their brains out on a Marner or Rantanen contract. You can grab good players on the cheap in trades in offseason as well.

You know how much you hate Treliving? That's how much I hated Dubas. The big difference I see is that one isn't "creative" enough, and the other made a series of franchise crippling decisions.

Depend whats your definition of elevate the team. Gourde having 37 pts pace, bring grit and playing pretty good 200 feet hockey

Barbashev had 40 pts pace ( close to gourde) and had huge impact on stanley cup road for vegas

Lehkonen 23 pts pace and had huge impact for colorado

coleman had a carreer high 44 pts pace at 28 y/o and goodrow 32 pts pace

They was all just depht player and they all get a huge impact.

-If you're hoping a player to carry the team, the reality is they are no player enough good for this

-If you want a player who can have an impact and be a good complementary piece , fit in the system, add secondary scoring and add something team to make them better... Gourde is a pretty good option, yes and he can make move the needle at the end

Yes Kampf Jamcrok Mo and Domi needs to be traded
jT 5 mil max

I would traded for a young center us 1st and Cowen , I don't know who that is.

You don't think that it's possible to add scoring depth by spending $4 million on a 3C, and $3 million on a 2LW? Hell, maybe you could go as high as $5 million on a 3C if you can get the Tavares AAV down a little bit and / or take a little bit of cap from the 2LW or 3RD spot.

JMO, but I think you can find a perfectly good scoring 3C for $4-$5 million. Without even exploring the trade market, pending UFAs that come to mind include Matt Duchene, Mikael Granlund and Sam Bennett.

You don't get Granlund for under $5 mil... it's probably going to be $6 mil. Bennett probably starts with a $7. Duchene extends in Dallas.

The only difference is Barbashev, Lehkonen, Coleman and Goodrow were all in their mid 20s basically and in their or entering their prime. Gourde is well past that. Not saying he wouldn’t be a good addition, he would be a solid pickup but I’m afraid of the cost given his resume with the Lightning and age.

If Domi isn’t being used next to Matthews, not really sure the fit on this team. He would be on my get rid of list for this summer.
Yup when he signed I assumed it was because we’d be using him next to Matthews.

Very questionable signing now. Very questionable deployment. Should be beside Matthews with Marner running his own line in a contract year.

Again, a depth players isn't going to make the difference on a team that isn't a favorite.
And 5 years ago, is a very long time for a 33 year old NHLer.
4 years ago, he was 11th. in points for the Lightning, however he scored 6 goals which was good for 5th. on the team, which was the defending Cup champs, and a favorite once Kucherov came back, probably on a team over the Cap.

He'll provide some depth, but the Leafs aren't a favorite. Just throwing away assets for a short term depth rental.

But thanks for your input.
