Trades & Free Agency Thread: 2024-2025 - Trade Deadline Approaches

I have not previously been an advocate for this, but given how putrid our offence has been, I would taken a run at Mikhael Granlund. He has put up a ton of offence over the last two years, and has 44 points in 51 games for SJS right now. I don't think he would be very expensive to acquire, although we would need to flip a mid round pick to a third party team to take 50% of his cap hit.

Our lines could look something like this:

Knies - Matthews - Domi | This is a rough facsimile of the terrific Bertuzzi - 34 - Domi combo of last year. Need to get Domi going and spread out the offence.
Patches - Tavares - Marner | Tavares has always been terrific with Marner, I think this would be a fantastic second line.
McMann - Granlund - Nylander | All offence line that you shelter. All fast, and McMann and Nylander are great together. Granlund only facilitates more offence.
Lorenz - Kampf - Jarnkrok | I think this would be a sneaky good fourth line: terrific defensively, and might actually score once in a while.

This is under the assumption that the Granlund acquisition is not too expensive, because I think we really need to add a piece of RHD as well. And someone better than Luke Schenn.

I think he'd be fairly expensive to acquire with the season he's having. Also going from top line/PP minutes on a bad team to secondary / lower end minutes will be hard for him to get points and contribute in that way. This is what happened in Pittsburgh and why he looked really bad. He's also not very fast but he's agile and obviously is a great passer. Overall I don't see the fit with the vision they have going on.

Treliving said himself they aren't looking at displacing the current players, aka Matthews and JT, moreso to find someone that can help the 3rd line at both ends of the ice. (paraphrased obviously)

I think he would be a great fit if we didn't have someone like Domi already, Granlund is a bit better defensively too. I had heard they checked in on Granlund in the off-season but financials didn't work, seems like a problem to overcome now still.

I put 92.5M for the cap, I think that aligns with what the projections are for the cap unless the NHLPA uses the inflator but they hate escrow and haven't used it in quite a few years now.

The league cancelling escrow payments for the moment suggests the cap is likely going to be closer to 95ish. The 92ish mil cap estimates were being thrown around before that was announced

I agree that the fit is not obvious given "their vision," but would posit that "their vision" is proving to be extremely problematic. I am as disillusioned as I have been in my leaf fandom.

Head meets the wall, time after time.

Fits with what Tre has done so far. He likes vets like this.

Imo no reason not to try.

CJ is also the most accurate insider of the last couple years too, for what it's worth
Scored 26 goals last year, was pacing for 20+ every year Berube was there

Could be a solid 3rd liner

As said above, I think Vegas would also be a great option for him. Elite team, poor winger depth, nice location, no tax

Agree that cancelling escrow payments reinforces a big rise this year, but i have my doubts the league and nhlpa will deliver such a drastic one year increase, to protect against sudden pay disparities and market instability.

Saad is probably Vegas or Tampa bound but I’d love to see him in the blue and white.
Can't remember the last time I saw him play, but I've heard he's in TJ Brodie territory now. The guy you want gone and think it's crazy someone else picks him up, for the inevitable outcome.

The mutual termination is interesting though. Does he have some fire?

Vegas, Florida, and Dallas, with their no-tax situations, will also be quite appealing.
If he walked away from millions I'm not sure the tax situation is his priority. He wants to succeed and thrive. Of course that could still be those same 3 teams :) If he had more of a physical game or if he was a defensive rock it would make sense for the Leafs. They need Tavares back and another C with NHL caliber offense more than another winger with potentially a bit of offense. If he comes for $900kout of man love for Berube then sure but I think he will do better than that.
