There seems to be some faulty memories around here, acting like we've been throwing away 1st round picks and prospects on rentals willy nilly.
We were actually very protective of our prospects (thankfully, as they're currently providing 73% of our forward depth scoring beyond the core 4), and we have only traded two 1sts for rentals in the Matthews era; neither of which were likely meant to be rentals.
The first was Foligno, who was PPG and looking great on the 1st line until he got a debilitating injury in his 5th game with us. Which is also likely why we didn't re-sign him. The second was O'Rielly, who has the 3rd best playoff P/GP on our team in the Matthews era, behind only Marner and Matthews. He ended up being a rental because Treliving didn't re-sign him.
Just because you didn't end up winning the cup, it doesn't mean the player didn't help. It doesn't mean you should stop trying to build the best team you can in the future. With the drop in the team's quality since Treliving came on, the decision is not as clear, but considering how wide open the division and conference is this year, and the uncertainty with Marner, and the numerous short-term moves we've already made, spending a 1st at the deadline has to be a real consideration.
