Rather sign Ehlers at 8-8.5m this summer than marner at 13-14m.

Ehlers Matthews Nylander
Knies Tavares McMann
Domi Minten Cowan
Lorentz Kampf Dewar

We need to start thinking about 2nd pairing RHD.

If we can run

McCabe - Tanev
Rielly - X
Ekman-Larsson - Timmins/Myers/Benoit

Then we have the best defence we have had in the Matthews era.
Not sure what’s really available out there,

Ristolainen, Andersson, Murphy, and Carlo.

Those are probably the 4 names that could potentially be available due to the teams they’re on and that would be an upgrade on what we have.

Murphy @ 2.2m (50%) with one yr left is the perfect guy. Hopefully he had a good relationship with McCabe and would be willing to extend long term once it's done.

He’s better than Holmberg so he’d instantly be an upgrade.

Not saying he’d be my top choice, but he’s not trash.

lYou really compare him to a healthy scratch player when no injury? really?

Did you ever watch him play, i'm from QC and every habs fan just hope to get rid of him because he's bring absolutly nothing to the game... Even at 50% he doesn't deserve to spend 2,225 M of cap space on him

That healthy scratch player is currently in our lineup and has played in well over half our games. Dvorak would be an upgrade over Holmberg, technically making us a better team.

Again though, he would not be my first choice but if he’s all we can get for a cheap cost it’s better than nothing.

i'm better use my cap hit and asset in something else who's really upgrading the team. Dvorak would not having much more impact than Holmberg...

OR

Another top-4 d, regardless of handedness

Rielly-McCabe
XXX-Tanev
OEL-Timmins/Myers
Benoit

Tre is just trying to find a capable third line combo (that isn't a defensive liability) so he can put all of his assets towards a RD.

Trade Robertson + mid pick/prospect for Tanev bro.

Domi Minten B.Tanev
Lorentz Kampf Dewer

Then 2026 1st+ for Murphy

McCabe Tanev
OEL Murphy
Rielly Benoit

Minten really isn't ready for full time 3C minutes. It's the C position that needs filling, not Tanev, though at the right price, I don't mind him either.

I just listened to Leafs Talk from last night and they revisited the Nick Paul deal. What a steal for Tampa - they acquired him for Joseph and a 4th then re-signed him for ~3.15Mx7 and he’s averaged 22g/22a per 82gp for them after topping out at 20 points in Ottawa.

That is exactly what the Leafs could use. His profile screams Jack McBain to me but I don’t see McBain being so cheap (although Joseph was a decent piece at the time).

I don't agree with you very often, but I'd love Jack McBain, and have been talking about him for two years. I just don't see Utah moving him now. He just turned 25, is cost controlled, and well liked there... What would we have that would entice them to move him?

Man though... has McBain been on a cold streak offensively... 2 points in his last 19 games.

I also think picking up a guy like Krebs could be a big win... Buffalo is in all kinds of a mess, and I think he's got much more upside. He's playing with crap linemates, but had more "potential" at one point.

edit - noting Paul is getting to play with some pretty good players... Point, Hagel, Guentzel for most of this points... it's improbable a player like McBain, or Krebs added to the Leafs, is going to be put in a position to play with such linemates.

That's easy to say to find a solid young player for a cheap price and hope they develop into a very good long-term piece. Paul didn't have a great first year post extension either but definitely keeps getting better and better.

I think the Leafs want to do something similar but it's very hard to find. Kakko should have been one of those targets.

Leafs are in a worse position than NJ capwise. You have to find $5m for Woll and McCabe before having to resign Knies, Marner and Tavares. Good luck trying to outbid somebody for Kovacevic.
Leafs don't have to find anything for any of their UFA players, they likely will chose to for a select few.

I think they can ignore Tavares until the off-season, then player and team can decide how much they love each other.

Woll, McCabe are signed and Knies is an RFA so you have to find the money to pay them or trade them. They will command $9+m in raises. Marner will get $2m raise. Good luck finding $4m for Kovacevic.
