So, Rust and Rackell. No one's taking Bunting or Hayes, and Malkin and Crosby aren't getting moved. Very much doubt Letang would be moved too.

O'Connor to me will get a lot of calls. A big guy that can skate, very good on the PK and on the forecheck... I think he'd be great on the Leafs but it's hard to justify adding a pending UFA winger. Maybe there's a way to swap Robertson with O'Connor in a multi player deal though. I came up with the offer of Robertson and Holmberg for O'Connor and Acciari months ago

Bunting has been pretty solid there. I think a team with cap space can take him on quite easily.

Trade deadline strategy:

2026 1st, Cowan, Minten, Danford, Grebenkin, Hildeby & Akhtyamov are off the table. Everything else is in play.

Use the 2025 2nd+ to get the best C you can.

Use the 2025 3rd+ to get the best D you can.

So you're not expecting to be very busy by the deadline?

Might be able to get a decent player with the 2nd, the defender probably won't be much better than Timmins or Myers if at all.

Try and move out Domi. Such an awkward fit. That money could be used to in an actual Center

Ya... 109th (of 800 players, so first quartile) in the NHL in scoring since December 15th... for $3.75 mil.

11 points in 17 games.

Clearly that type of productive is terrible for a player like him... a player who will actually get into scrums, stand up for team mates... [/sarcasm]

I think we've reached the, throw everyone overboard time of the year, despite leading our division.

Yes, we could use a proper 3C... but there isn't a need to move Domi to achieve that. Especially for a guy who can play in any position.

edit... man, we wanted depth scoring... we get scoring, let's throw those players away... amazing.

Matty and Mitch would love their buddy back.
Always liked Rackell. Not sure what kind of year he’s having.
I was never a huge Bunting fan but he would fit in pretty easily and knocks Max Patch down to the 4th line.
Makes for a pretty good left side.

I don’t expect we get the top-tier players. Unlike Dubas, I think Treliving is hesitant to give up first round picks and mortgage the future.

Examples:
Last year we got Edmundson/Lyubushkin for a 3rd+.
Wennberg went for a 2nd+4th.

Bunting hasn't been a very good guy in the playoffs. Patches play hasn't been inspiring as of late though. The LW spot is a weakness, but I'd be targeting other spots... 3C, RD as priorities.

What about Cody Glass from Pitts? He's a C. I know he's struggled so far at the NHL level, but I keep thinking of Dylan Strome when he could have been had for pennies. And, unlike Strome, we just need him to turn into a good 3C not a 1C.

Only asset I'd take off the table is Grebs. Don't think he's worth much on the market but have a sneaking suspicion we'll see him on the playoff roster in the near future like Boston would pull kids out of nowhere.

Cowan, Minten, and the 1st must only go for players with term.

Start pulling out the kitchen sink.

Tough time for a reclamation/upside/hope play, but I’ve thought of the player the same way.
And an aside, NickRob is cooking now….let him play.

I'd try for Krebs from Buffalo first. I think there is more upside there, cheaper cap hit....

Since the core was drafted and JT added, this team has made countless trade deadline deals to push us over the top or get us a couple of rounds. We have lost a lot of currency (too much) and for what???? Trade deadline deals very very seldom help any team and certainly hasn't helped the Leafs. I would stand pat and go with what we have unless a hockey deal that makes sense knocks on your door. I or 2 players brought in with what we can afford will not move the needle. This team is what it is. It's up to the over paid players to put up or shove off.
I'd let them stew in their misery and hopefully some demand out because we sure as hell can't bet rid of them with those NMC.

I would say it's definitely the first season where he's had a lot more bad than good. Last year he was pretty good to me. He's been generally on the 2nd pair most this season, paired a lot with Myers...

Rielly is nowhere near buyout territory the same way Tavares wasn't a negative last season despite having a tough season, but people were losing their minds with Tavares over the last couple seasons and he's been a beast this season.
I don't think JT has had a season close to as bad as 22-23 or 24-25 Mo, its just his salary that remains so triggering for some people. About the buyout, I don't know what club's think of Rielly. To me, anyone who would be interested in a trade would also want to give some of their own bad money back on a return, so its Mo for an asset that isn't a top 4 LD and then some kind of overpaid forward to make make the money work so you never get the $7.5 or even $5M to fix your D until a few years down the road when the acquired deal is finished. For the short term window the buyout is better in that scenario. If he is dealable with only a couple $M retention for the first year that is obviously way better than a buyout but he has 5 x $7.5 left so they really have to love the guy and he has to agree to waive which might make any trade option a moot point. If he bounces back its solves everything of course.

Edit. They are changing his D partner. Hopefully he is comfortable enough with McCabe that he can concentrate on getting back to his own game right away.

So, summarizing... adding players hasn't worked for us in the past, so let's give this team a lower chance of success this year, and hopefully they want to leave, so we can blow the team up and rebuild. Alright, it's an opinion.

JAY TEE MILLER
Marner and Rielly for Miller and Pettersson. Then trade Miller to NYI for Dobson :sarcasm:

Leafs dump Rielly early. Do not have to overpay Marner and get a cost controlled #2C and top dman.

Miller goes to a US market. Lou gets cost controlled Miller and moves dman who he may not want to pay.

Canucks get super elite winger to replace Petey and local boy MR and Tessa Virtue.

Everybody wins.

JT Miller is about as likely as Pettersson :)
