What do you think those deals would look like?
Probably a painful amount. 2026 1st and 2025 2nd gone... probably Minten as well as the other names listed... it's above my pay grade anyway.

Not aimed at you, but others....

Krebs and Ristolainen would be my two targets this TDL.

Knies - Matthews - Domi
McMann - Tavares - Marner
Pacioretty - Krebs - Nylander
Dewar - Kampf - Lorentz

McCabe - Tanev
Rielly - Ristolainen
Ekman Larsson - Myers
Benoit

Thought this year would be a write off given the core 4 would be sucking up 53% of the cap but then seeing how well they were keeping the puck out of their net, I thought they have a shot with the East up for grabs but I am only in for tweaks. I'd be satisfied with a Kadri type #2/#3C and D'Angelo (I'd give him a shot). Won't cost much and we keep some bullets for a better run next year.

You could likely get him for just picks without involving Minten.

Edit: he's a bit younger than I thought. But still, I'd be reluctant to give up Minten here

I think McBain has the chance to be Lowry 2.0 and a legit 3C long term for us, not just a quick rental.

Minten might be a 3C, but safely a 4C

The age and speed that McBain has along with actually being a bit of an asshole are something I would want to pay for.

I'd offer Danford + a 1st

Over Minten+ ?

I'd say Minten+1st or Danford+1st is firmly overpay territory, you may in fact be able to land another asset in the deal.

I guess it depends on how you view Danford. I think he got off to a shitty start with the concussion setback in camp but what do you value more, a 3-4C or 2nd-3rd pairing defenseman? Danford plays a pretty valuable game back there, you might have Matt Roy or Scott Mayfield.

Minten seems defensively responsible but I have no idea on the offensive upside.

I understand but we had an opportunity to sign a young 6"3" 200 lbs player who had played on 2 bad teams that was drafted 3rd overall and still had 48 pts in 69 games .
Kerfoot I didn't like him

Oh yeah. I had Dylan Strome on my wish list too. Though I thought he could be had for a little cheaper than what Washington gave him at the time. 3rd overall pick and Marner buddy from the GTA days too. Junior teammate of McDavid.

Dylan Strome started doing things faster, even back to Jr, he'd have that puck on his stick and try to pull back for extra velocity etc on the shot, I guess being in the league around other guys telling him what to do to have success worked out in the end.

Like I’ve always said about Strome. Probably not the guy you want as a top five pick in 2015 to change your franchise. But under any other circumstances he’s got a spot.

I think if he was taken around 12-18 in the draft, you're over the moon.

I am still mind boggled it was a non-QO situation with Chicago...

I think Chicago and Washington had him at the right time in his development curve. Washington got him for free obviously but before that Chicago traded an okay young guy in a hockey deal. Not anywhere near the same investment at a 3rd overall, so you have time to let him grow into a role.

I think Minten has a much higher chance of becoming a top 9 NHL forward than Danford has of becoming more than a #6/7.

Minten can also potentially contribute more in the next 3-4 seasons, Danford likely wont even make his debut in that period.

I'm ok not going completely all in, our window is open for a few years so there's time but if they stay at the top of the Atlantic by the deadline, you'd be crazy not to bolster your depth further. We're seeing what a team without Matthews or Tavares looks like and it's rough.

There are plenty of ways of adding a good efficient player or two without having to give up a top prospect or a top pick.

I lean towards don't invest in this team at the deadline.

I'm as down on this team as anybody but I don't think we can afford to burn a contention year

I'm for being smart with our resources and looking for bargains, I'm only keen on giving up good assets (1st rounders, Cowan, Minten, Danford, Grebyonkin etc) for young guys with term left on deals

Yep, look for the Rasmus/Dobson type deals and go for broke, otherwise plug the gaps with worthless picks.
