I dunno but the only reason the Leafs finally changed their awful ways years ago was because of Shanahan. It hasn't paid off long-term quite yet but at least we're a respectable franchise playing in meaningful games. We could very well be the Buffalo Sabres here. He'd be the last person I blame for not winning the cup or the decisions made by GMs. But he's probably on thin ice for sure and there might be time to change things up there too.

I know there was a dark time through the mid 2000's to mid 2010's, ownership was scared of the rebuild. I think his biggest misstep was likely giving Dubas the reigns at a critical juncture with the big contracts coming up.

Lou was not perfect....maybe we've been spoiled because we made the playoffs consistently lately but extending our season most years by another 7 games just doesn't feel that great anymore.

Lou crashed out the Islanders really badly. I'm glad we moved on, he's just not a good GM long-term. I thought Dubas did OK early on but it definitely went sideways too fast. Bled out assets and made too many moves/signings that didn't work out.

Either way, going back to the present day Leafs -- Treliving is already on the hot seat for me. Just not enough. We'll see how he navigates the next 6-8 months. A good cup run, or actually winning it, and all is forgiven.

They did make the final 4 with the NYI twice and for what it's worth, IMO they gave Tampa the hardest time both years. I think he's probably 2 years overdue to be let go from that job but he's done better than other GMs in that time.

I think the 2 deals I would say that Dubas did well on were the McCabe deal and the Muzzin deal, it's just unfortunate Muzzin sustained some bad injuries. Other than those 2 deals though which Dubas paid market value for....I think he overpaid or lost in a lot of his deals.

The Tree experience has been too quiet. The first year he didn't do much, brought in mediocre pieces last TDL. This last off-season was good, he got Lorentz, Myers, Stolarz, OEL and Tanev. Kinda missed on Hakanpaa but only 1 year deal.

His McCabe and Woll extensions were tidy work while he looks to have overpaid Nylander a bit. Again, I had higher expectations for him in terms of the changes he would incorporate because it does feel like odds are that JT and Marner return.

Initial prognosis for Tavares out 2-4 weeks. More optimism this morning, but they won't assess for 7-10 days at least.

Shanny's last year under contract...I feel like it's a foregone conclusion he isn't getting a new contract...Tree may some freedom after...maybe.

After last year's playoff failure

To me it was about Rielly, JT and Marner being changed over with Matthews and 88 under contract.

All 3 had NMC so it was likely wishful thinking but not even 1 of them moved...
I wish I had your faith in Shanahan being dumped, history tells me all the problems with this team will be here next year and for years to come……..

Shanahan has won nothing snd deserves all the criticism one can throw his way. Leaf Nation’s motto ought to be “happy with mediocre.”

It's better that the motto before "Happy to be a shitty team never making the playoffs" which was my point.

Would you rent Marchand from the Bruins as they move towards a re-tool?
Yes and No... Marchand would be a nice addition, but winger isn't the major need. Clearly we need a C, and he doesn't play there. I would even question if upgrading the D, is more important than adding a winger.

He'd definitely cost something to add but he can help.

There is definitely a hole on the top 2 lines at LW after Knies...

I was thinking Hall or Zucker would be decent targets.
I was at the Chicago game, so I saw Hall live up and down the full ice. He can still skate really well, would bring some much needed speed.

I enjoyed some if those “shitty” era teams far more than this bunch of entitled divas, I mean Marner thought the played a good game being -6 against the Canes. It’s delusional, and the fanbase wats it up……

Yeah, 50% off, 3M cap hit...it's actually something that could fit with relatively minimal gymnastics and I don't think he's going to command much more than a 3rd or 4th round pick.

The other upside is I think he has trade protection, I think he was willing to waive for us or Boston last time when Boston acquired him so if we came calling this time, maybe CHI helps him out.

He would do anything to win.

Another responsible center would be nice, but they need a heck of a lot more than just a depth center, even when Tavares is healthy.

Attitude adjustment.

If you enjoy and prefer a crappy team, then that's your prerogative. I think it might be easier being a fan of a perennial bottom feeder, I don't blame you.

It comes down to who that C is, and what their cap hit is.

With Marchand at 50%, Reaves, Robertson traded, Mermis and Hildeby down on the Marlies, Hakanpaa and Jarnkrok on LTIR still, we'd have approx $2.9 mil left in cap room... Which would fit most of the guys on my list, either straight up, or at 50%. Obviously it eliminates Grade A guys, like Miller or Cozens, but if we traded for Marchand, we wouldn't have the assets for those guys anyway. Even guys like Laughton, they'd want a 1st for, which we likely don't have after a Marchand deal.

Just tried this really unsexy mock.

Cates or Frost would be relatively interchangeable for a 3C but they could be around longer term, not a rental.

Hall would be of interest to me

He's a genuine top 6 forward who's scoring at half a point per game on a God awful team who still has mobility

We could probably put together a very good second PP unit to, which would help when the first unit falls apart

Patches fell off kinda hard, long season....having offense on the LW would be welcome.

Sign me up, I like it.

What do you think those deals would look like?

Anybody who can do anything offensively would be welcome 🙏
Our offense is nonexistent
$46.6m (53% of the cap) to 4 super elite forwards and our offense is non-existent, and you are talking regular season. If that is not proof enough that this management team does not have a clue, I have a bridge to sell you.
