Trades & Free Agency Thread: 2024-2025 Season Edition

One player that Treliving could inquire about is Vincent Trocheck.

If we are maintaining the idea of a four to five year trajectory, after which the Leafs will fall off and hard - this would check all of the now identified boxes for those years. A middle six centre who can stunt in the top six, a terrific defensive player who is physical, and has the skill to play with the best of them - a very berube-like player.

One of the better players on the dot, in the whole league.

The big question mark here is his cap hit, as he comes with a 5,625,000$ cap - and I doubt that GMCD would want to retain even 10% for four and a half years.

Maybe in the off-season but in-season seems very hard to pull off. Our only "big" salary player to move is really Kampf. The rest are either pretty cheap or LTIR/low value.

You could in theory trade Kampf and say Robertson, which is over 3M in cap, to absorb Trocheck with Jarnkrok and Hakanpaa on LTIR until the playoffs though. I'd have to look at the numbers but it's definitely do-able... but you'd have to add a couple very good assets in that to make them even listen.

He doesn’t want to go anywhere
He’s always good in regular season, Nylander was also lights out last year till he signed!!

Stop making the same mistake over and over
Wait for the playoffs
If he walks he walks
Won one round with him in 8 years. What's to lose? Jersey sales?

I think Tavares-Marner works significantly better than Tavares-Nylander, so personally, I would be looking at acquiring a center to play with Nylander, rather than a center to play with Marner. And it matters, because if we target a center to play with Nylander, a playmaker is probably more ideal... vs if we trade for a center to play with Marner, a shooter is more ideal. I'd try and trade for Mikael Granlund who is the best playmaking center available to play with Nylander and run 3 scoring combos of Matthews-Domi, Tavares-Marner and Granlund-Nylander, with the 3 power forwards of Knies, Patches and McMann on the left.

Personally i dont think Nylander will be better or worst with a playmaker... he need to make with player who will do the dirty work and who will help to bring back as much you can the puck back 1'- Winning 1v1 battle 2-making defensive play

you can have the best playmaker with Nylander but if they running for the puck biggest part of the gamr. Will just be harder for nylander

How come this wasn't a justification for not handing out the big deals last year?
It was. But then it got quiet bc AM was on a 80goals pace and Willie was at 50goals 130pts pace.
Mostly bc there was hope of a deep playoffs run as they(Core 5), just won their ONE and ONLY playoff series in 7 years in that last playoffs.

Think that’s the main difference between this year and last year.

Most here(including myself) would like to see the extension of MM and JT after the playoffs. As if they extend them now and crash out in the first round again, there is really nothing MGT can do to build a winner except for hoping that in ONE of the future playoffs the core 5 just clicked and get it done.

Is the assumption they retire and then receive the deferred money?

In Vatranos case yes (payouts start in 2035), as he plans to retire in a more favorable tax location.

The others simply have payouts after the contract ends - just a way to manipulate cap hits and value of money, similar to frontloading.

Thinking about it, Leafs have already set a precedent of frontloading with seemingly no relief on the price point. So Marners contract is likely structured the same way as the other two.

Dreger linked seven players to us on insider trading:

brock nelson
ryan strome
ryan o'reilly
scott laughton
mikael granlund
yanni gourde
nick bjugstad

Friedman mentioned on the 32 thoughts blog that we prefer a C with term.

Who do you like best?

The sad reality is that ROR is what we need.
He was here. He fit. We over paid for a rental.

Right move. But it was a mistake without term.

Matthews/ROR/Tavares/dewar would have been perfect.

No thanks to ROR for me. He's even slower now. I'll take Cirelli. ;)

ROR + Schenn is the ideal package. No one wanted them to leave and this time they come with an extra year on their contracts.

Ryan Strome at 3.5M per for this year and next or something along those lines would be my next favourite option. McMann/Patches - Strome - Domi would be real tough to play against.

Can you imagine giving up two 1sts to get ROR x2 and then losing to Florida?

The fact leafs lost the serie doesn't mean plekanec had not be great for leafs. He helped to shutdown a line who's destroyed the leafs all season long...

Leafs just had too much hole defensive side at this moment so they still lost... but plekanec yas a good trade.

It isn't a deal I'd put high on the to-do category. Obviously, there can be good trades that don't make a difference. Not interested in non-impact deals. Why bother throwing assets away just to look better when you lose.

Rielly + Holmberg for Miller + Brannstrom
Then get Murphy for Timmins/Brannstrom + Niemala
Then get Tanev for Dewar + 3rd
Perhaps try and swap Kampf+ for Laughton

Knies/Miller - Matthews - Marner
Miller/Knies - Tavares - Nylander

Or Miller as 3C and reorganize the wingers.

Lorentz - Laughton - Tanev 4th line.

McCabe - Tanev
OEL - Murphy
Benoit - Myers
Timmins/Brannstrom/Rifai

But Plekanec did a difference...

If you hope a trade for a player who will carry the team on their back all playoff long, you will probably wait until you're die. Everyone on the team need to raise their game

Not spectacular doesn't mean that's not making a difference. Player add at TDL last 10

Tarasenko
Barbashev/Hill
Lehkonen/Manson
Coleman/Goodrow
Kempny
Streit/Hainsey
Schultz/ hagelin

Of that list Tarasenko was the only top 6 player or top 3 in D being traded. It was all depht player/ complementary piece and they all had pretty huge impact on their team run. They're all " throwing away pick to look better " like you said but they bring in exactly what they needed and that's worked for them. The fact that didn't worked for leafs in the past doesn't mean they should stop try to become better.

If Rielly was a UFA this summer would anyone here feel comfortable giving him 5x7.5M at age 31?

If your answer to that question is no, would you feel comfortable if the Leafs traded him and received no return?

If your answer to that question is no, why is it no?

Is the assumption they retire and then receive the deferred money?

Marner will be 28 in May so...36 years old? Unless someone completely cheap shots him or something, I suspect he will have another 1-3 years in him beyond that if he keeps up in training etc, provided he wanted to keep playing.

He could hold off until post retirement I think as well.

I think Nylander is like 2nd in the league in goals right now and had has had such notable centres as Holmberg at times this year with Matthews out of the line up.

I don't mind keeping some guys if they can play ball a bit.

Honestly the guy that really needs to go right now is Rielly.

I guess that's kind of what I'm hinting at but don't really know how to word it.
If he has money deferred to after the contract is complete, wouldn't it count against the cap if he receives it while on his next one?

(that's probably not worded right either lol)

I know what you're asking, or trying to ask and basically the answer is no lol.

Someone asked Friedman basically the same thing "So when Vatrano starts making 900k a year, it counts against Anaheim's cap right?"

In short, the answer is no, which I think is why the NHL may want to take it out of the next CBA.
