Always liked ROR as a player, and was thrilled when we brought him in. I liked his game a lot with the Leafs, and was convinced he would extend and be a big part of the team.

But he clearly didn't like being a Leaf, and was happy to leave. Why bring a player back to somewhere he doesn't want to be? It can't possibly end well.

Columbus Blue Jackets to seek first-round pick for D Ivan Provorov | TSN

Plenty of time remains before the March 7 trade deadline, but it appears interest is already building in Columbus Blue Jackets defenceman Ivan Provorov.

TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBrun reports the Blue Jackets will be looking for a first-round pick back for Provorov, once the team decides they are ready to deal him.

"Ivan Provorov figures to be the No. 1 rental defenceman traded before March 7," LeBrun explained on Insider Trading. "But the Columbus Blue Jackets are calling the several teams that have reached out or telling them they're not ready to deal with him quite yet.

"And there's an understandable sensitivity to the Jackets wanting to give their group as long a leash as possible to remain competitive. But the business of the game will take over at some point here. They're not going to make the playoffs.

"They have to manage their assets ahead of March 7. They will most likely deal Provorov.

"The asking price will be a first-round pick, which is obviously pretty rich. Now, last year, Sean Walker and Noah Hanifin did indeed fetch a first-round pick as rental defenceman at the deadline. Chris Tanev did not, although some of that (is because) Calgary just preferred the package they got from Dallas. So, we'll see if [Blue Jackets general manager] Don Waddell can get that. But [Provorov] will be a name we'll be talking about a lot."

Provorov is in his second season with the Blue Jackets after being in the summer of 2023 from the Philadelphia Flyers. He is a pending unrestricted free agent carrying a cap hit of $4.725 million after the Los Angeles Kings retained just over $2 million of his $6.75 million salary in the three-way trade that landed him in Columbus.

In a recent edition of the Empty Netters Podcast, it was reported that Ryan O'Reilly stated that there is a pair in the Toronto Maple Leafs who will never win a Stanley Cup. Ryan O'Reilly is a well-respected forward in the NHL, having paid his dues to the league for 15 years.

He apparently loved Marner and was advocating for Nashville to go after him, so that leaves two of Matthews, Tavares, Nylander, and Morgan who he would likely be talking about. I guess he could have been talking about Samsonov too.

Mirtle simply mentioned that he doesn't see it as being impossible that the Leafs would look to re-acquire him if the Preds decided to do a tear-down. He said that Leafs management still loves the player. I don't think he was suggesting that anything was imminent or that it was ever discussed.

Personally, I wish ROR stayed with the Leafs and re-signed. I don't love the idea of spending assets now to re-acquire him when we already did that once. I guess for me it would be determined by the price which I imagine would be high.

The player didn't love the Leafs enough to want to stick around. Enjoy the basement in Nashville.

I think he enjoyed being a Leaf but there were definitely a culture clash that was hinted at when he made his exit.

Does that culture change with his ex-coach Berube steering the team in a new direction?

Do we want ROR who is 2 years older than last time? Can’t get sentimental over a rental player who had good press conferences.

Mintens ceiling was projected at 3C not that long ago. I'd be suprised if he was our playoff 3C but looks like we get to test him out. Good start so far!

I agree that relying on Minten as a 3C for any kind of playoff run is risky and not well advised, and I like Minten and believe he has poise, maturity and a strong hockey IQ.

I do think he COULD be a 3C on this team as it aims for a division title and stronger playoff positioning.

I said in my pre-season posts that I thought we should plan for 200+ games (combined) from Robertson, Holmberg, Grebenkin, Minten, Cowan, Steeves, and other Marlies (Nylander, Tverberg, Hirvonen). I stand by that. It's good for their development, it could increase their value as trade chips, and it creates competition and that is a good thing. Robertson and Holmberg should be feeling it from Steeves, Grebenkin and Minten already.

Come TDL, I would welcome an Acciari or that type added to shore up 3C. Maybe even a Frost or Granlund and maybe one of our Robertsons or Holmbergs could be valued as part of the return.

No thanks, he had an option to sign here but he decided not to. We don’t need the ungrateful lads on this team anymore. Let him go wherever they want to trade him.
 
It's wild to me that ROR signed a deal without any NTC or NMC at all. Like nothing. Even Kampf got his agent to get a modified NTC.

Why would it be 'reported' that he said that? If he said it on a podcast there would be proof.
 
Could we afford a $4.5 mil 3C? With what assets are we trading for him?

I think the answer here is no, and that's without getting into whether he wants to be here. He plays 15:13 Even strength and has 1 goal, 6 assists in that time this year, while starting 63% in the Ozone. He'll get less time here, on the third line. That's playing with Forsberg. He's also 33. He put up 41 points last year 5v5, also primarily playing with Forsberg...

Laughton has two goals, four assists in 12:25 of even strength time, 56% dzone starts. He had 26 points last year even strength. Laughton is 29, cap hit $3 mil.

No question RoR is better than Laughton, but the question is... who fits better? I think for what we need a 3C for, the price to acquire, and the cap hit, Laughton is the better value. I think the age is an important factor as well. Would Nashville retain for three years, without a huge return? I don't think so.

Yeah this is the “report” that poster is referring to from that podcast:

"I was talking to someone who knows Ryan O'Reilly very well, and he had talked about his time in Toronto and was like, 'certain people on this Toronto team will ne- ' He like, went to management and was like 'Blank, blank, and blank will never win, and I don't want to be here anymore,' And he's not saying that about the people in his locker room right now."

I don’t think I “trust” that “I heard from another” kind of reporting, seems pretty suspect to me. Maybe it’s all the “likes”.

If the deal included sending multiple assets in the other direction, and I mean Kampf, Robertson, Jarnkrok type of assets.

The other issue is where do you find playing time for him, that's the 9 minutes a night time available on the 4th. line.

We are going to have a surplus of guys here. If it takes two guys, that aren't in our long-term picture... I have no issue sending them. He's a really good fourth liner... and I appreciate that's only 9 minutes a game... but he clicks every box, and is a massive upgrade over someone like Reaves... He is one of the fastest guys in the NHL, he can score some points, he hits, and he can, and does fight too. With him and Lorentz, you've got a heavy set of wingers, who can also play hockey, who will cycle and wear down other teams. We need an upgrade in the bottom six for sure... and he's an upgrade.
