I’ve said it before but Jake Evans would be my guy. Someone you can easily extend this off-season as well. Your bottom six centres would be set come next season (or as early as some point this season) with Evans and Minten. After seeing the Eller deal, I wonder if a 3rd + Holmberg would be enough for Evans.

When everyone is healthy -

Knies - Matthews - Marner
Pacioretty - Tavares - Nylander
McMann - Evans - Robertson
Lorentz - Kampf - Jarnkrok
Reaves/Dewar

I would absolutely love to see a deal around Robertson for Doan.

McMann - Evans - Doan would have the potential and tools to be a pretty effective third line.

Domi vanished?

I don't see Utah having any interest if Robertson. Their lineup is pretty full of mid-line wingers. Doan is waiver exempt with plenty of time to get back to where he was.

This is an overreaction to getting shutout last night but we really need to acquire another capable offensive player if possible.

I think our defense and goaltending is good enough to go on a long run but this offensive depth just wont cut it. It hurts that Robertson is struggling, because he's someone that you could have seen score 20+.

Shit forgot about Domi, guys been invisible after the first couple games of the season lol. Instead of Robertson, put Domi on the third line with McMann and Evans.

Maybe we give a few people a shot, before we go obtain someone... having said that, if it's a 3C we want, we really don't have anyone ready for that spot. Minten is the closest, but I think he just isn't NHL ready for a year or so. Steeves and Grebenkin are really the only "prospects" showing enough at the AHL level, to warrant a NHL tryout, at least of the wingers.

Yep, a good 3C that can consistently provide some real offense would be a huge jolt to this roster.

By far our biggest current need.

It's going to take a lot of patience for the next 6-8 weeks I think before the Leafs hit the button. I'm sure they'd love to make a trade but you need to find a team to dance with for the assets we have. The 3rd line center spot seems like a big hole they've wanted addressed for a long time. I don't think they expected Domi and Robertson to have 1 goal between the 2.

In the mean time, I do hope they try out Steeves, Greb and even Minten. Steeves in particular was red hot with the Marlies, maybe you can squeeze that hot streak with the Leafs for a bit.

I suppose if it's January some time, and Minten is near PPG in the AHL still, we should give him a try... but I'd really like him to work on his offensive game more. I think it's premature to try him..

That 5.5m player wasn't remotely close to a 5.5m player though. Shouldn't have been that hard to replace.

Agreed, but we didn't re-allocate those dollars to forward so we shouldn't expect to see greater forward depth. Though I do think we probably have better F depth than last year and certainly better D and G depth.

Our top 13 F in TOI last year were:

Matthews
Nylander
Marner
Tavares
Bertuzzi
Domi
Knies
Kampf
Jarnkrok
Gregor
McMann
Robertson
Holmberg

To compare:

OUT:

Bertuzzi
Gregor

IN:

Paccioretty
Lorentz

...and consider Knies and McMann moving up the ice time list as a factor also. I also feel Minten and Dewar could be on that list by the end of the year. If we see growth in the Robertson and Holmberg games we are now going 16 deep without even considering Reaves who was 14th in TOI last year.

I think we are deeper at F, D and G than last year and better at the top end of each with Knies, McMann, Paccioretty, Tanev, OEL and Stolarz.

Is Eller that much better than Kampf at this point in his career? Are their salaries comparable?

I think Eller would have been in addition to Kampf. He has 7 points this year, and 31 last year. Kampf has three points this year, and 19 last year. Ellers is at $2.45 million, but is a UFA after this year. Kampf is $2.4 mil for this year + 2.

Eller would have been a bad fit for this team. He would have exasperated their scoring issues in the bottom 6. They need offense. Look at what happened in the playoffs the last two years and look at what's happening this season.

and who exactly do you believe that they might get for 3C, and what is your expectations for a 3C?

There is no one that is available right now that makes sense. I’m hoping they get creative and look for a Hertl-esque move for a good player with term.

I would still be interested in Sillinger at the right price as a long-term piece.

I wouldn’t spend a 3rd+5th on a Kampf upgrade that won’t help them get bottom 6 scoring. If Kampf wasn’t around I’d be fine with that deal for 4C.

Friedman has more on the Penguins "firesale" being open. Mentions O'Connor and Pettersson as players to keep an eye on.

If Robertson and Holmberg continue their offensive struggles, I wonder if the Leafs call them up?

Niemela should be dangled for a speedy skilled forward since the management and coaching don't seem to like him. If he's not in the plans and with Myers ahead of him and management reportedly really liking Myers there's no point in holding Niemela to rot in the AHL.

Not sure his value is all that great all things considered. But a rebuilding team will likely see value in a young close to NHL ready prospect if the Leafs go shopping. I have no doubt he's part of the players they will dangle.

Yup they can't make that same mistake they did with Lilly. Brad can learn from the Sandin situation that Dubas did well on. As a result, we got a nice parting gift in Cowen

I still maintain that this team needs a capable (even if he isn't spectacular) 2nd line center that allows Tavares to be moved down to create a 3rd scoring line.

Someone like Barrett Hayton would be worth investing some quality assets into and Utah is deep at center with Cooley, Schmaltz, Bjustad and Kerfoot remaining as options and a loaded system of prospects coming up.

Ideally, I'm picturing something like this...

Knies-Matthews-Marner
Domi-Hayton-Nylander
McMann-Tavares-Patches
Dewar-Kampf-Lorentz
