I am probably dangling Robertson in packages. I have always thought he was going to get surpassed by the prospects in the pipeline.

Robertson needs to go to some bottom dweller team who has a top 6 opening.

I think the Leafs have been trying in some way to do that. I don't think they'll have interest in a pick package back, they'd prefer to package him and get some form of upgrade/player back.

Leafs might have to bite the bullet for another couple months and see what shakes out.

Some good ideas for trading for a 2C or a strong 3C, but I think that Easton Cowen may be the guy these teams ask for in return. I would likely do it based on our contending timeline, but I look at the Capitals this year and see how our timeline could be stretched with the right prospects (McMichael, Protas) in the system and a few cunning summer moves. I don't think Robertson + or Niemela will get us anything substantial though. It's going to be one of our top prospects.
The leafs won't trade those guys, and they won't need to. They will trade picks.

I think he is probably going in a package at the deadline.

If you resign Tavares for $5m, is this team better off letting Marner walk as a UFA and sign Sam Bennett and Ekblad?

Knies-Matthews-Nylander
Robertson-Bennett-Domi
Grebs/Pacioretty-Tavares-Cowan

Rielly-Ekblad
McCabe-Tanev
OEL-Hakanpaa/Timmins

Not hating on Marner, and not debating likelihood that both Bennett and Ekblad make it to UFA and if the Leafs get them.

I am talking about things the Leafs can do with freed up money from signing Tavares for less and letting UFA Marner sign for $12m somewhere else.

If you want to bash Marner/kiss Marner’s ass, please don’t bother responding and save it for the cesspool that is the Marner thread.

Cheers

Ekblad and Bennett come in way above what Marner will cost.

You’re probably looking at 9+ for Ekblad and between 7 and 8 for Bennett. So even by the most conservative estimates you’re looking at Marner + 4 mill

If you give Tavares $5, you have an extra $6m to give Ekblad/Bennett.

Thats $16m you have to use that gets your there.

If you are looking to change how this team looks and competes, that is a sure fire way to do it in a hurry.

I think we'll end up keeping Marner.

Keep in mind, if we keep Tavares and he takes a steep discount, that money will be handed straight to Knies on his new contract.

So more of the same of what hasn’t worked for the past 8 years….

If they have the same poor showing in the playoffs, it is indefensible of this management just to keep bringing the same players back, at above market paycheques.

What we do comes down to what happens with knies first. If they bridge him maybe they can upgrade JT to Bennet, but I can’t see a scenario where we don’t sign Marner and actually improve.

Agree 100% Marner and Matthews need to be separated, and I love your optimism but I have seen nothing over the past 8 years that supports what you just said.

Ample evidence to the contrary and back to my question, is this team better with Ekblad and Bennett instead, with a better chance of winning a Stanley Cup?

Yeah I'm pretty tired of Matthews-Marner as well. They should have been broken up 2 weeks ago.

With those two tavares better be taking a 3 mil or less deal or he can walk and you look for a winger

Ekblad either stays in Florida or joins McDavid in Edmonton.
I like Bennett but he strikes me as a guy who’s going to get a contract that won’t age well.

IMO

No idea. I wanted them to go after Bennett when Calgary was trying to dump him. That was a missed opportunity IMO.

I did too, everyone told me was trash and Kerfoot was better.

I don't think there is any beef with Tree and Bennett, Tree just had coaches that kept putting Bennett at RW or 3C, nowhere to really have success.
