Kampf + Pick for Kunin
Dewar + Minten + Low Pick for Laughton + Ristolainen (Retained)
Holmberg + pick for Tanev (50%) retained

Knies - Mathews - Marner
Domi - Tavares - Nylander
McMann - Laughton - Robertson/Pacioretty
Lorentz - Kunin - Tanev

Not sure that 2nd trade works for Philly? But other 2 deals work I think. That fourth line would be a pain in the butt to play against.

No - hedging your bet means you protect yourself in all possible outcome scenarios. In this scenario, you would still risk losing both Rantanen and Marner to UFA while ensuring that you can, at most, retain one.
Trading for Rantanen would mean Treliving has a pretty good idea of his willingness to re-sign Rantanen long term. Trading Knies would be bold

Rantanen is one heck of a player, no doubt...

But if my choice is... Knies + 1st + Marner next year... or just Rantanen, I'm not picking Rants.
What If I tossed a possible Stanley Cup :stanley: into the equation in that Leafs would have both Rantanen and Marner in their playoff lineup this season. Perhaps you let Tavares walk and Marner still re-signs perhaps.

Would winning the Stanley Cup in 2025 change ones opinion of this potential trade?

& that 1st round pick is 2026 (since we already dealt our 2025) which is 2 playoff years away even before that selection is made.

Full disclosure Matthews Knies is my current favourite Leaf player after Zach Hyman was let walk, so that would hurt a lot. But I still would likely do it regardless.

I'm sure some people have heard of “no risk, no reward.” For those who haven't, it is a colloquial saying basically meaning if you don't take chances (aka risk) then you'll never reap the benefits (aka rewards). :wg:

Now, another NHL Insider, The Fourth Period's David Pagnotta, has revealed that not only are the Leafs and Hurricanes discussing a deal involving Rantanen, but that the Canes are attempting to pry young star Matthew Knies out of Toronto.

"According to Pagnotta, the Hurricanes have asked the Maple Leafs for Matthew Knies to be included in a deal, something Toronto GM Brad Treliving is not interested in doing without a long-term commitment from Rantanen."

It is highly likely that the Leafs view Knies as an untouchable, but if a player like Rantanen were to agree to terms on a multi-year extension as part of the deal, perhaps the Lesfs would be a little bit more amenable to moving the young power forward.

The interesting wrinkle here is that if the Leafs do acquire Rantanen and extend him as a part of the deal, it's would all but guarantee the departure of one of Mitch Marner or John Tavares. After all, there's only so much money to go around, even with a substantial bump in the salary cap.

JT and Domi out the door and then you deal with the Marner situation. Matthews/Marner/Nylander/Rantanen would be nasty

How do people feel about getting Rakell with retention? Only if a Center doesn’t shake loose. Brings a lot of extra goals but would be pricey.

The only thing that has my spidey senses up about Rantanen coming here is that it is eerily quiet for a team that desperately needs upgrades. Either Treliving is working on something massive or he’s asleep at the wheel

Trade rielly for an unsigned rantanen. Knies is untouchable.
Carolina isn’t going to take a 30 year old who makes 7 million for the next 5 years who is also on a steep decline

Sign and trade without Knies?

McMan, Cowan, 2027 1st. round pick and Domi.

No retention.

Let one of the UFA's walk in the summer.

I'd rather trade Mitch Marner straight up for Mikko Rantanen and keep Matthew Knies.

McMann, 1st and Domi would all still be in play to get a top 4 Dman/and or 2nd/3rd line Center.

PS. I'd deal Minten before Cowan as well.

I would trade Knies for an established second-line center in his prime or a top pairing defenseman. Other than that trading him for an upgrade at wing makes no sense.

1. McMann + Cowan for Rantanen (Carolina)
2. Domi + Holmberg for Dickinson and Reichel (Chicago)
3. Kampf for Crouse (Utah)
4. Robertson for Bischel (Dallas)
5. Niemela for Schenn (Pittsburgh)

Knies - Matthews - Marner
Rantanen - Dickinson - Nylander
Crouse - Tavares - Reichel
Lorentz - Dewar - Steeves

Rielly - Tanev
Benoit - McCabe
Bischel - OEL

Anyone who actually wants Scott Mayfield has very clearly not watched an Islanders game in at least three years. He is barely an NHL player at this point. He was a warrior for several years, but father time took him early. There is a reason he has been healthy scratched by the Islanders.

I'd like a Brayden Schenn or Brock Nelson personally.

On D - I'd like us to younger, but still solid. I like Ferraro, Romanov, Peeke, and Kesselring. Just need someone to hold the fort on pair 3.

Andy Strickland says LA is a NO for an extension from Rantanen if there was a trade made…..Interesting. Florida or Toronto maybe? It bears repeating, if a trade ever happened and he came here you would have to assume an extension was talked about right?

This deal for Rantanen could be tied to a complicated Sign and Trade deal which is what is taking all the time.

Remember BT did a previous sign and trade deal with Matthew Tkachuk before sending him to Florida, so he is no stranger to this.

Getting Rantanen name on a long-term extension contract first might be the very "eerily quiet" thing holding everything else up.

This gif bahahahah

I'd really like to get Byram to run the Leafs power play, but I have no idea what the Leafs can offer Buffalo to make the deal...
