It would be interesting, but I don't think it's likely.

Mostly because of the GM.

Here is a new report from Elliotte Friedman today. .

Sportnet's Elliotte Friedman made a very bold remark about Leafs superstar

It appears more and more likely that Leafs superstar Mitch Marner will hit free agency on July 1st.

IF Treliving can secure a signed Mikko Rantanen (ie sign and trade) he removes all the risk to the organization of potentially losing Marner as a walk away UFA at seasons end for nothing. This would be using the money that was going to be allocated to re-signing Marner now invested in the Rantanen instead going forward.

Is that what they call hedging your bet???

That ship my friend for the Leafs has already sailed in that they pay 4 players > 1/2 their entire salary cap. :wg:

All year, before the season even began I was willing to walk away from Marner in hopes of signing pending UFA Mikko Rantanen instead for similar cap $$$.

If Carolina is willing to do a re-sign and then trade (at Leafs financial terms) first then all the risk of the move above is gone. Leafs have a big powerforward under contract long term,

Besides you know what they say about eggs, not going to make a nice Stanley Cup :stanley: winning egg omelette, without cracking a few eggs.

Rantanen is one heck of a player, no doubt...

But if my choice is... Knies + 1st + Marner next year... or just Rantanen, I'm not picking Rants.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for Rantanen, but not sold that he’s what we need.

I’d rather go after…

1.Ferraro

2.Tanev

3.2nd/3rd line center (???)

Kampf + Pick for Kunin
Dewar + Minten + Low Pick for Laughton + Ristolainen (Retained)
Holmberg + pick for Tanev (50%) retained

Knies - Mathews - Marner
Domi - Tavares - Nylander
McMann - Laughton - Robertson/Pacioretty
Lorentz - Kunin - Tanev

So a reporter we never heard of spoke to a podcaster we never heard of who spoke to someone who "knows O'Rielly really well" and O'Reilly told him about a conversation he had with Leafs management. Is that 4th hand of 5th hand? It might be true but if he isn't a Leaf by the weekend I am not sure its because of anything to do with this revelation.

I mean he did leave for a then non playoff team and hasn’t shown any willingness to come back…

No - hedging your bet means you protect yourself in all possible outcome scenarios. In this scenario, you would still risk losing both Rantanen and Marner to UFA while ensuring that you can, at most, retain one.
