Trades & Free Agency Thread: 2024-2025 - Deadline-ageddon

I am 100% done with this team if they do this.

Knies is about as untradeable as you can get right now. Make no mistake about it, I want Treliving and the Leafs to make a move to counter what Tampa and Florida have done so far. But this is not the right move at all.

I would rather them stand pat then make this trade.

Only if Marner or JT will waive now - get huge assets for him. Then, I’m ok with it.

Why? How do you know what's going on with Marner? Knies is a reasonable ask for Rantanen.

Rantanen is a better player than Knies will become, so it's really about how much you worry about the 6-year age gap.

Also, the awkwardness of knowing Rantanen is here also likely means Mitch is gone in the summer and probably won't be best for team morale, either. But there's one thing he's got over all the Leaf players, and that's performing in the playoffs, so maybe it's worth it.

I don't get the sense MM is sticking around. The language around him is very different then what was the case with WN and AM.

He's better than Knies. But if it drives Marner off the team, I don't think Rantanen is that much better than Marner that is worth losing a goal scoring RFA power forward

Canes gave up much more than Knies to acquire Rantanen. Rather send them Marner than but if that is the cost for a signed Rantanen, you have to do it IMO.

We'd be golden if both would take up to $12m.

No, by this time last season, Nylander had already been re-signed for two months.

Clearly, there's a different approach now. But I think the agent is also an issue. Ferris takes his guys to free agency.

Tomorrow should actually be the deadline to re-sign Mitch, and that should be made clear to Ferris.

If the leafs are getting price points and indication that Rantanen is going to be cheaper than Marner, I can absolutely see them adding him as a UFA and signing Rantanen long term instead of marner.

Or it's a leverage thing to convince marner to lower his price.

I'd hate hate hate moving Knies for a UFA though. That's a hard no for me.
He needs to be locked up yesterday.

Sorry but anyone who wouldn’t take an extended Rantanen over Knies…. Yikes. Knies is a good young player but Rantanen destroyed teams just a few years ago on his way to winning a Cup

I certainly agree with that. Ferris plays dirty pool and the players by extension know he is mandated to get max money.

I don’t think this team is winning the Cup with Rantanen in place of Knies. And we’d be guaranteed to lose one or both of Marner or Rantanen after this season and we’d be without Knies. I don’t feel like handing Carolina another young future star forward like we did with the Jarvis pick.

Rantanen should be acquired for picks and prospects if at all. If Carolina doesn’t want that so be it.

Long term it’s Marner + Knies for Rantanen.
Long term for me has Marner and Rantanen on the Leafs. We got some major fat to trim in the summer but it would work. JT gone, Dewar gone, Kampf gone, Domi gone, Jarnkrok gone. Get rid of the fat sign your big boys, bring up Minten and Steeves full time,

I don't think it's about Knies being better than Rantanen, it's trading Knies and then likely losing Marner as well in the offseason. Not sure how you afford both. That makes it a tougher sell.

Unless Brad already knows Mitch isn't signing here anymore, in which the situation gets spicy.

you do that you have basically no cap left for depth and/or D. I'd easily take Rants over JT, Reaves, Kampf, and Domi, but then we need a solid pipeline to replace those guys via ELC. We don't exactly have that.

I still wouldn’t trade Knies for Rantanen.

It doesn’t solve a need, it’s an upgrade on Knies yes but Knies isn’t an area we are looking to upgrade. It also further cap handcuffs this team moving forward.

Anything it takes to get it done as long as it’s not Knies.
