Trades & Free Agency Thread: 2024-2025 - Deadline-ageddon

I don't understand this sentiment that 3-4 years is all that's left with this group. If we lock Marner and Knies up on reasonable 8 year deals, with the cap going up in the future, the window would be years 3-6 of their new contracts.

I guess 3-4 years is the extent of Matthew's contract? (The captain who didn't sign a 8 year deal?). With he's decline this year, it might be smart to trade him when he still has value.
It's 3-4 years because Matthews/Marner/Nylander are 27/27/28 respectively.

These aren't young improving players anymore. They are at their peak and soon onto the downside of their careers. Stars tend to age better so hopefully it will be a gradual decline but still, they're getting worse, not better at this point.

10 Million on Kampf, Domi, Reaves, Benoit and Dewar.

Smh

Reaves and Benoit are 200k above the buriable amount, and Dewar is below it.

Domi has been misused all year. He's a complimentary offensive winger being asked to play center will mostly inferior wingers.

Berube obviously doesn't like Kampf, so he could be moved for somebody the coach will use better.

Could be, if our guys play their hearts out and we need that little edge to push us over the top. Could also not make a lick of difference if the core players aren't difference makers.

Most likely scenario is another first round exit of course. Hard to argue with the historical evidence there unfortunately.

The problem with standing pat right now is that this isn't a decision made in a vacuum. The decision to double/triple/quadruple down was made last off-season. Waffling and changing direction now is really going to hurt.
That’s literally the losing addicts mindset. We invested so much already without results, must continue and hope it works out or it is a total loss.

That’s a lose lose situation.

What are the odds that all of Matthews, Marner, Nylander have already played their best seasons?

I think Jarnkrok will get traded too to open up another 2+ million. To be honest, that would be very prudent.
if they need big $$, they can move Domi and OEL too if they have a 'good' RHD coming back in a deal. OEL is ideal for bottom pairing and on the left side, not higher up, and not on the right.

Maybe, but we're already past that point of return.

The other option is what, draft players in 2026 and 2027 to help us win a cup when Matthews is 35?

I'm not seeing much of a winning alternative here
