The closest recent comparable for a rental star is Giroux. He got a 1st + Tippett (a recent 13 overall pick) + a 3rd

It'll cost us a fair amount. I'm hoping not McMann but Carolina probably asks for him given that they'd want immediate help

I'd disagree... with the right partner, he's shown multiple times he's good enough. It's kind of crazy how difficult that is to find though, when it should be easy.

Happy to consider changing things up in the offseason though... just impossible right now.

Lebrun on SC reported last night a major driving factor in Rantanen being shopped is Carolina ownership, they're not happy he isn't re-signing

Given ownership is upset, I'm not sure how much leverage the Canes really have here. Unless LA comes in with a Clarke offer we can't match, they're going to get a futures package for what looks to be a pure rental

The closest comparable is Claude Giroux from a few years back - he got a 1st, Owen Tippet and a 3rd

Rantanen is clearly better than Giroux at their respective career stages so he'll command more

That's a real bold move by Carolina, trade a top 6 player + solid younger player in Dury for Rantanen, just to flip him for younger player and futures.

Rantanen to Anhiem would be interesting. Ducks need a quantity for quality type deal and canes need to save face. Something like Zegras, Terry, Luneau and 1st ...obviously with Rantanen deal to resign in place ...if they can do that

The Leafs need to go for a trade like they swung with Chicago for McCabe and Lafferty a couple of years back. They need to find a trade partner willing to retain salary and possibly include A 3rd team. Depending on players from other teams, the amount they should be willing to give up shouldnt be worried about. They have a team to compete and if players brought back have term they will not be as impacted. Some trades I would look into:

Chicago for Murphy and Donato
STL for Schenn and Parayko (I would give the farm for this trade if retention was involved)
PHI for Risto and Laughton
NYI for Nelson and Dobson (I would give the farm for this as well)
PITT for Schenn and Rakell ( I would give the farm up for this)
SEA for Olesziak and Tanev
BOS for Carlo and Coyle
SJ for Kunin and Ferraro

Obviously some of the above deals will be expensive to various degrees but contracts would need to go out from our side to work. In some cases you can argue 2 of the above deals can be made to really strengthen the team where in other cases you may only have the ability to do one.

But this is how I would attack the deadline. They cannot stand pat, they need to swing for fences this deadline.

Holmberg? He’s 25 and has been playing noticeably better lately. How much value do you want for his small cap hit? He’s only going to get better. Do not trade him.
