While the Rantenten speculation is nice to think about, just don't see it happening. I'd imagine Carolina is going to want a solid roster player in return, they aren't just giving up on the season because they can't retain him.

Nelson, while he is a solid player and the best center available, he's purely a rental as it's been speculated he wants to play for the Wild.

Suddenly Toronto is getting backed into a corner with the lack of centreman available due to waiting till the final hours. It's either pay a premium for a Nelson or B.Schenn or Laughton as the 2nd teir centerman are starting gone such as Evans, Grandlund, Gorude.

My guess is that they get Laughton and Risto (as another poster posted). Flyers are probably holding out to see if they can get more from another team.

The whole front office was in vegas last night
I hope they have a plan
I think this team is as good as its goalies
hopefully they say what having 3 solid and large/heavy (who can skate well) defenders does for the team, rather than have tweeners ...the D is better than last season, but, its still not good enough.

Rielly is a summer move at best. He's not going to waive in the middle of the season. That's fantasy talk. Leafs really need to stop with the full NMC given out. Can't have both max pay and NMC on every player of significance.
Rather they give more dollars and not allow movement clauses to be a consideration……….

Given where this team is at, I would take the proven playoff performer, and that isn't Dobson.
Forget the better playoff performer, You need to move off Rielly and that contract sooner than later. Unless he finds his wings, odds are he helps us to a first round loss before an ECF appearance. If there was any way to move off Rielly for Dobson today and the Leafs do not do it, they are incompetent IMO..

The Leafs need to go for a trade like they swung with Chicago for McCabe and Lafferty a couple of years back. They need to find a trade partner willing to retain salary and possibly include A 3rd team. Depending on players from other teams, the amount they should be willing to give up shouldnt be worried about. They have a team to compete and if players brought back have term they will not be as impacted. Some trades I would look into:

Chicago for Murphy and Donato
STL for Schenn and Parayko (I would give the farm for this trade if retention was involved)
PHI for Risto and Laughton
NYI for Nelson and Dobson (I would give the farm for this as well)
PITT for Schenn and Rakell ( I would give the farm up for this)
SEA for Olesziak and Tanev
BOS for Carlo and Coyle
SJ for Kunin and Ferraro

Obviously some of the above deals will be expensive to various degrees but contracts would need to go out from our side to work. In some cases you can argue 2 of the above deals can be made to really strengthen the team where in other cases you may only have the ability to do one.

But this is how I would attack the deadline. They cannot stand pat, they need to swing for fences this deadline.

I'm guessing yes but do we need a better dman going forward IMO. Tre should be targeting Dobson or Clarke. Wishful thinking.
agree fully. grabbing a 'castoff' young pre-peak D like Rangers did with Fox, and Minn with Faber (and Jiricik ...still shocked we were not in on that) is the ideal way to go.
Dobson is already semi-established, so, Clarke would be the better target, and Buffalo should be spoken to, as they cant have all 3 of Dahlin (wont trade) Power/Byram on the left side.
We really dont need LHD, but, they are solid and young.

Hypothetically, if they get Rantanen and re-sign him then Marner knows he is pretty much done here. How would that dynamic work?
That’s a switch I’d do, but the problem of half your cap being tied up in four forwards remains, nothing changes without change………

It's been a shit show. There is not other way to describe him. The fact there is not comment about his play is scary. He gets no flak
Agreed, yet every year posters want to find the unicorn defender who can make Mo look defensively responsible, news flash that player doesn’t exist. At this point I’d try him on the wing……..

I know, but at least Rantanen is a proven playoff performer.
He’s a better player than Marner I’ll give you that, but the Swiss cheese D is getting old, time to invest some of the JT/Marner money to fix that problem imo……..
