Trades & Free Agency Thread: 2024-2025 - Deadline-ageddon

  • Xenforo Cloud has upgraded us to version 2.3.6. Please report any issues you experience.
Bold doesn't mean bad though? If Tampa wins the cup or goes far nobody will care about that stuff. If it doesn't work you keep working at it.

I actually had TB as the favourite to win the cup even before this trade, so that's definitely a possibility, but on value alone they significantly overpaid. In my experience, this board would be quite upset if we significantly overpaid in a trade, even if it made us tangibly better.

If we're holding off for good/fair value at the deadline, maybe Treliving should have been more aggressive 6-8 months ago but he wasn't either.

I don't really care about right now, but being scared to lose a trade instead of wanting to win is basically peak Leafs stuff. I hope Treliving gets it right. We will see.

Both players Tampa got are significantly more impactful than Laughton. Bjorkstrand has averaged a 50 point pace for his entire career and has scored 20 goals 5 times (and 18 in 56 GP during the COVID year). Gourde is actually a C, unlike Laughton, and has won 2 cups with Tampa and was (might still be) elite defensively. He has also surpassed Laughton's career high in points 4 times.

I don't think you'll find too many people who would agree with you that present-day Gourde is better than Laughton.

But would you pay the price that TB did?
Two 1st, One 2nd and Dewar
If we're upgrading Rielly and adding more depth on defense I'd be willing to part with two firsts and a 2nd.....or any young offensive player with upside

Definitely wouldn't have gave that up for the players Tampa Bay acquired, there's better options on the market....not to mention 5M on two guys in our bottom6, we should just keep Domi & Jarnkrok plus all the picks if that's the case.

Tampa Bay made this deal because they dont have to free up cap, and had 7+M available....they still have 2M🤣but there rosters basically complete, very few holes, and they can still add more depth.

The advanced numbers show that Gourde has been better this year (The Athletic Net Rating, EH GAR, EH xGAR) and I don't know how anyone would be more confident in Laughton than Gourde going into a playoff series.

If the Leafs made this Gourde/Bjorkstrand trade, I don't think very many people in this thread would be calling it an 'all-in' move.

The board would likely crash to be honest. There would be a lot of angry folks.

Perspective is everything. There's still lots of time until the deadline.

Feels like you probably could have had a much better player like Brock Nelson for that price the Lightning paid…

For what it’s worth I would have preferred to add Gourde vs Laughton, but that mostly because Laughton isn’t really a Center.

Exactly.

There is no all in move for the Leafs bc the Core 5 really have not shown anything in the past that they can dominate series and win.

Let’s say we get Jones, Rantanen and even the Schenn brothers and manage to stay within the Cap.

It will still be AM, MM, Willie, JT and Reilly leading us to the Cup.

Is Laughton an upgrade at C over Domi, I need this confirmed...

They are different players. Laughton is a lot better on the forecheck, he kills penalties and he hits. I think he can easily slot back to center and do well, but people will see what he has done with Philly to make a conclusion he's not a center. If Domi can play center, I have no doubt that Laughton can slot back to his natural position.

He makes us better and strengthens the 3rd line for sure.

TB and even Panthers can make these type of deals bc their top guys had proved that they can perform in the playoffs when it matters.

Our top guys had not. That’s why it is frustrating bc all these players trades so far beside Rantanen are all depth players. Seth Jones is a mid pair Dmen now until proven orherwise. And depth players don’t help you win series, at best they give you a chance not to lose the series. Top guys help teams win the series
