Trades & Free Agency Thread: 2024-2025 - Deadline-ageddon

  • Xenforo Cloud has upgraded us to version 2.3.6. Please report any issues you experience.
Matthews is 50% of the player he was last year , why would we trade assets at the deadline ? This team is going nowhere fast without a health Matthews or did everyone forget what happened last year

One interesting point made by Mirtle and Jonas on the Leafs report was that they should have waived Dewar and Reaves ahead of the deadline. Now it’s too late, but neither would’ve been claimed and it could have given the Leafs 2.6 mill heading into the deadline.

This is the kindve thinking that Tre has dropped the ball on during his tenure here.

It's not a forward thinking organization. They have two gears.

Not thinking -Nonis, Tre
Over thinking -Burke, Dubas
Rational thinking -Lou short lived

They need to find the common sense middle ground. The rational thinker(that isn't 163yrs old) But that's our Leafs!

You could always add to the 2.6 with a money in/out deal. Could always call them back up after the deadline if they didn’t use it.

But what if Dewar is claimed? He's a whatever player but he's not completely useless. And then you just lost a player for no reason.

If the Leafs were close to anything that required cap space, I'm sure the waivers option would have been used. They can still use the waivers option on Friday into Saturday to get cap compliant before Saturdays game.

Reaves though, he's useless through and through. But he's the DJ cheerleader I guess.

Personally i'd be going for McBain & Tolvanen plus maybe Tanev.....three guys that will give Florida or Tampa Bay a hard time.....and there all young besides obviously Tanev.

These three players retained would cost us 5M + 4.5M from C.Tanev

McBain

For

Domi
Reaves
Hirvonen
3rd round pick

Tolvanen(50% retained)

For

Jarnkrok
Timmins
Niemela
Kampf
1st round pick

Tanev(50% retained)

For

Dewar
5th round pick

Murphy(50% retained)

For

Myers
Mattinen
2nd round pick

Knies-Matthews-Marner
Tolvanen-Tavares-Nylander
McMann-McBain-Steeves
Robertson-Lorentz-Tanev
Holmberg-Pacioretty

Rielly-Murphy
McCabe-Tanev
Ekmam-Larsson-Hakanpaa
Benoit

Would love McCann. Sadly doesn't fix our C or D issues. Need an UNO reverse card for not protecting him over Holl in the expansion draft. McCann and Oleksiak would be a great deadline for Tre

McCann has like 1 playoff goal in 20 games, aim higher.

Agreed, term to me is a necessity if we’re parting with anything from our top handful of assets.

Re: Matthews I will say, I agree he’s definitely hurt and I think the team, even if they haven’t told us what hasn’t really skirted the fact that he’s not healthy. With that said, I definitely like that he’s still producing and helping the team, even if his goal scoring is currently non existent. I definitely expect that we find him some rest down the stretch, and that he will push himself through his injury harder in the playoffs than what we’re getting now. Fwiw, I thought he had some goal scoring jump vs the Sharks.

Would be ideal but built through UFA doesn’t really work cap wise. You get few if any bargains.

Lastly, I really don’t think opting to not improve clear weaknesses for this playoff opportunity is sensible. Even with Matthews being limited all year long we still find ourselves 4th in the league. There’s gotta be some reasonable cost options we can acquire out there. There always are. Time for Tre and his management staff to earn their paycheques.

I think you can get reasonable prices on things like a 3C, and fourth line wingers, a bottom pair upgrade for RD in UFA.

That said, I'd go for Chychrun if he's a UFA... and maybe move Reilly. Yes, you'd pay a lot, and chances are he extends in Washington....

If you can fill these spots, then go trading for the rest....

I mean technically, we do have a 2nd line winger issue as well!

Not that I want him, but McCann is the type of person you give up Cowan + for.

I mean if you want to go down that route, what happened the many years before that when he was healthy?

Imagine Tre comes out on Friday and states that Jarnkrok returning is our Deadline acquisition lmaooo
Maybe.

Let's be real, though; No deadline acquisitions will make up for the lack of impact if the big boys go quiet again.

So, actually, the idea of a quiet deadline isn't bad, but from Treliving, it is.

Yeah, we need to return fire as it really looks like our main competition is absolutely loading up.

I didn't know Bjorkstrand was available.

Go get Parayko or something.
The Leafs' main competition has lost one of its best players likely until next season.

He's still getting a lot of chances and he's a beast all over the ice. Not a bad thing to hopefully see him get hot at the right time this time.

You still have to try and go for it in some way. Giving up should not be in the cards.

yeah, i could honestly care less if he's only scoring 40 goals during the regular so long as he steps it up come the playoffs

I like what a Tolvanen and Tanev package would provide, unfortunately it's the least of our needs before a C and RHD. Hoping Brad can surprise us but I wouldn't bet on it. Utah also makes for a good trading partner (Crouse/McBain/Kesselring) but don't think they want futures tied along with cap dumps.

I'd probably go all in on acquiring McCann. makes 5m for the next two years. Assuming you bring back Marner, your top 6 forwards are set in stone for the next years as well.

Can go with the following:

Knies - Matthews - Marner
McCann - Tavares - Nylander
McMann - Trade/Domi - Domi/Jarnkrok
Dewar - Kampf - Lorentz

I'd assume Robertson/Jarnkrok would go in any deal

Utah apparently will be very quiet. They want to keep building and pushing their rebuild further. They may sell off some rentals but I'd be surprised if they gave up locked up players for picks/dumps. They already re-signed Maatta and are close to re-signing Vejmelka.

Kerfoot is a pending UFA, we love him here :sarcasm:

I think the team is playing different, and that along with some nagging injuries is impacting his numbers. But lets be real here, we can't be expecting 70g/year pace all the time. Teams that play us in the playoffs KNOW that they need to make it a low scoring affair to beat us. Eventually, they will win because they are better defensively. This is why the focus this season has been on team defense to win. I don't think the offensive regression matters much to Leafs management. They know they have the talent to come through, assuming we can give our talent enough time to do so.
