Trades & Free Agency Thread: 2024-2025 - Deadline-ageddon

Domi + Kampf + Reaves = 7.5M
Timmins + Myers + Dewar = 2.975M

Send down
Robertson + Holmberg = 1.675M

Total available cap
12.1M

These guys can be traded for players with a lower cap hit....assuming with retention we could get there replacements for around 7M
And that's replacing Timmins and Myers with two shutdown defenseman ranked top25 in hits/blocked shots,
Domi & Kampf we can have Lorentz take over 4th line.

We dont lose anything doing this,
Timmins & Myers are replaced on the depth chart with Benoit & Hakanpaa.
We add two right hand defenseman
Domi & Kampf replaced with Lorentz & a solid center(trade) plus 4.250M left in cap to grab three wingers...depending on how long Pacioretty is out you can add another 875k

Playoff roster
Knies-Matthews-Marner
Trade-Tavares-Marner
McMann-Trade-Trade
Trade-Lorentz-Jarnkrok
Pacioretty-Holmberg-Robertson-Steeves

Rielly-Trade
McCabe-Tanev
Ekmam-Larsson-Trade
Benoit-Hakanpaa

I am uncomfortable with trading our 2026 1st with the contract status of Marner & Tavares and the health status of Matthews. Not gonna lie.
That is why I value the pick higher than I do Minten. There is an alternate reality where one or both those guys don't re-sign and the Leafs strike out in FA. They should be very nervous without those two on the team without any guaranteed guys coming back.

When it comes to Brayden Schenn with significant retention I am more open to the 1st because he has several years of term, if they can cut the cost with retention. Then, that is one new body in at an affordable price and then if those two walk, it is easier to take our chances on the market.

You can compare their records though.

Look at the history of the Panthers last 2 playoffs.

And they are proven winners.

and they are not the same team...The same way tampa twam is not the same team winning 2 cup and colorado winning their cup or vegas. They are not the same. They can't be close but not the same.

Don't having the same depht, exemple don't having a Gudas or Oel on a 3rd pair. So in case of an injury, not more equiped than leafs to face an injury in D...

Jones to replace Montour ok fine, if because lack of time/ chemistry Jones bring 80-85% of what Montour was bringing last 2, the little 15-20% can be huge.

exemple Bobrovsky losing 5% of his athletism and need 1/4 sec more to make the same save , it can result on goal and making all the difference

The playoff is all about detail, every little thing is pretty important

Yes, the deails are important.

And the Panthers know.

What are they running back 12 players from last year?

And same coach, with replacements.

Only fly in the ointment would be if Tkachuk can't come back.

You do our lineup including our injuries but you omitted other teams injuries, like, Tkachuk on FLA which decimates their forward group imo, their forward group looks really thin atm.
Florida has one injury?
And they have the capspace to add 2-4 guys on offense with the ability to push guys into their depth chart.
Sorry but Florida's forward group doesn't look thin and will only get better by tdl, there management actually gets sh*t done mate.
You clearly didnt read everything tho🤣
I didn't add two players to our roster Tanev & Hakanpaa everyone else is there...regardless we are short on right defense and now we're forced to use depth players.

But if you read everything i mentioned that some might argue that when we get Tanev and Hakanpaa back we're on par with Florida, but that's definitely not the case, close but again we are forced to play one of Benoit, Timmins or Myers come playoffs with no solid depth players.

I'd much rather go into the post season with Hakanpaa + Benoit as our 7th & 8th defenseman incase of injuries or matchups & two guys like Schenn, Gudas completing the back end.

Florida has 6 solid defenseman with depth, if we get banged up in round1 we're screwed.

But with the Panthers completing there defensive core & Tkachuk freeing up cap space not only did they get the upper hand on us there, now they have the ability to add more threats on offense(bottom 6)....another area we need to assess🤣

So what's management going to do?
Sit back and hope this roster can beat an improved Panthers team from lastyear, come on man....thats unrealistic

We need to make counter offers.
Our defense needs to be completed and its evident that two guys need to be added that strive in hits/blocks preferably with a right hand shot.
Once that gets done we can assess our offense, the longer we wait the higher our price will get and Florida + other teams will trade for the best available players....forcing us to stand pat or overpay for teee rash, fun times.

A deal needs to get done asap!

They play a physical game and in the 2nd round we're going to get chewed up without these additions.

only 40 % of team are new...

Exemple they lost a Stenlund who was an incredible pk player for Florida who had been great in pk last year ... 1-2 more goal allowed in PK, 1-2 less pp goal because your lost your QB in montour and maybe your eliminated unstead go in next round. difference between winning and losing are pretty thin

And we all know how special team can impact a serie come playoff, leafs always been in the wrong side of it.

Imo this would be a fine sequence of events

- a good balance of proper 3C calibre/value (I think this could end up being Gourde)
- a RHD upgrade. Timmins or Benoit possibly go the other way to make money and roster size work
- Domi moved to create cap room for above moves and because he doesn't fit anywhere/his contract is horrible. A complete miss.
- Dewar possibly moves too for either roster size compliancy or cap reasons. Just hasn't really carved a convincing role out and makes a shade over $1M. Some team could take him to PK. Late pick if it's roster size-related or maybe a slightly cheaper F to bank the couple extra $100k for the other moves

Gourde and Larsen is ideal but unrealistic.
Gourde and oleksiak may make sense.

I can almost see 1st for Laughton and a retained risto as what they do (they want a 1st for Laughton. Getting risto puts it over)

I would do Pageau and Mayfield. But ultimately we can’t just toss picks for rentals

Everyone needs to stop with this 1st round bs for Laughton it makes me sick, the guys teeee rash....id rather keep Domi or Jarnkrok.

Ristolainen is decent if retained but cost more cap then Gudas, Schenn & Murphy.

I like Pageau but is he really an upgrade from Domi??
Its pre close, and I'd argue Max brings more gritt too the bottom 6, and offense...the difference is 1.250M if Pageau is retained 50%....hard pass brother

Too get Tanev, Lorentz & Pacioretty back on the roster we need to move Timmins, Myers, Mermis, Dewar & Reaves.

We're left with Domi, Jarnkrok & Kampf too trade for more cap = 8.250M
The only player waivers exempt is Knies but thats another 925k we can free up, and he might not have to be sent down depending on how long Tanev & Pacioretty are out. Total cap = 9.175M

Lorentz fills the 4th center spot
Two shutdown defenseman will cost us around 4M.....that gives us 5.175M to acquire some help on offense.

Playoff roster
Knies-Matthews-Marner
Marchand-Tavares-Nylander
McMann-McBain-Gallagher
Robertson-Lorentz-Tanev
Steeves-Holmberg-Pacioretty

Rielly-Murphy
McCabe-Tanev
Ekmam-Larsson-Gudas
Benoit-Hakanpaa

PP #1
Nylander-Tavares-Marchand
Matthews-Marner

PP #2
Nylander-Matthews-Knies
Robertson/Steeves-Marner

PK #1
McBain-Tanev
Tanev-Gudas

PK #2
Lorentz-Gallagher
McCabe-Murphy

This would be my ideal roster, and id be willing to move any picks, Jarnkrok, Kampf, Domi, Timmins, Myers, Dewar and any prospects besides Niemela, Mattinen, Minten, Cowan, Hirvonen & Danford to make it work.

Also we keep Benoit he will end up being a top shutdown defenseman, i'd move any young defenseman besides him.

People are so worried about losing draft picks but not one draft pick for the next 10 years will work out to be on the same caliber as Marner facts! And if we dont make changes this tdl Marner will walk 100%....he wants to win

I was looking at depth defenseman with good underlying numbers and stumbled upon Louis Crevier. He’d be an interesting target.
What's his hits/blocked shots the past few years?
