I don't know how we'd properly compensate Carolina for acquiring Rantanen. Sure, great player and all, but wing is the least position of need, after C/RD... to spend assets on a non-need seems silly to me, but maybe there is a way to address everything? I don't have confidence in Tre to do such things though.
Easy peasy. Robertson, Niemela, Kampf, Abruzezze and a 4th.

Can you name an example of a trade where the player fit made no sense but the player was so talented it worked out?

I only ask because this thought process gives me Tyson Barrie PTSD.
No but I also don't wanna go check for it either. I also never said that's what we should do

If San Jose were to leave Luke Kunin and Jan Rutta behind after tonight's game, I wouldn't be upset.
Rutta hasn't played since Jan 23rd, out with a lower body injury, that doesn't appear to be progressing much.

Kunin is interesting... it's hard to separate the terrible team, from the terrible results. He's been a negative player, nearly every year, his entire career. He's one of the worst Sharks forwards, by a number of metrics. He has one goal this calendar year, and only has 18 points for a cap hit of $2.75 mil. He's not really a third liner on a good team, more like a better offensive version of Kampf, that is too expensive for the fourth line, but not as good defensively.

How do we feel about bringing Kadri back if the price isn’t stupid.

It's kind of irrelevant. I don't see a world where Shanahan would want him back, after all of the troubles he had with him last time.

I like the idea of Rantanen in theory. Big bodied winger that has cup winning experience and production. But at the same time the fit is awkward.

Still you should look at the potential anyway

No Mario Ferrario?
Not sure what the ask would be for Ferraro, not sure the Sharks would be keen on moving him as much.

Didn't know Rutta wasn't progressing well with injury...his 6'3" frame and 2 stanley cups would be really nice to have on the back end if he were healthy though.

Kunin hasn't been in a position to be successful. Perhaps on a better team he may. He's also close to Auston, may be motivating.

I'm not opposed to obtaining players who you think have more to their game like Kunin... but he's been paid $2.75 mil for the last three years, and $2.3 mil the two prior. I just don't think what he's done is worth that.

Is he a guy you throw $3 mil at to extend? 6' 197 lbs, 157 hits, not great at faceoffs... 47.2% this year, 27 years old, hasn't put up more than 22 points in the last five years. That 31 points in 63 games with Minny was great years ago, but it's never been duplicated. He's a UFA likely with high salary expectations based upon past pay. Has ONE goal this calendar year.

Or would a guy like Krebs be better?

6' 187lbs, 16 points in two minutes per game less, 100 hits, 51.5% in the dot, $1.45 mil for two years, then RFA.

I think if you are going to gamble on a change of scenery player, you do it with someone who is cheap.

Tuch and Knies are basically identical

Tuch signed in Oct of 18-19 season and

55 pts in 78PG or 58pts in 82GP pace (Knies pacing so far)
52 pts in 74 gp or 58 pts in 82gp pace (Tuch actual and pacing)

Tuch signed 5.83% cap hit on a 7 year deal

Knies on the same for a 95.5M cap is 5,567,650 - I would just bump it to 5.75M x 6-7 years
I don't mind that in the least. Always liked Tuch's game.

Like Krebs, not sure I'd like what Buffalo may want in return; divisional and all.

I'd rather see Tre go after the SJ guys or get Gourde, Tanev, Oleksiak out of SEA. Knies has proven he can play in the playoffs, and McMann hasn't had a real chance to show it yet. Those two could be very good playoff guys. Let's not go nuts on wingers when we have some in house. Even Robertson has shown signs he can step up. Time for our big boys to become dominant.

If we're going to go crazy and shake it up...get Rantanen, then offer Marner to Colorado! Think the Avs would give us Necas and Drury for Marner? Or better still, Necas and Manson. That's all just crazy talk btw.

listening to Mirtle on the Fan this morning, he said leafs shopping list has these players in order of priority:

1. Schenn
2. Laughton
3. *Gourde
4. Bjugstad
5. Evans

Ya, I'm not sure what Buffalo would want for Krebs, but they are so far away from worrying about competing in division, that I don't think it matters who they trade with. Bottom line, is I have no idea what they are thinking, and they need change... of just about any kind.

I would call the Ducks too... Zegras, McTavish... two guys struggling, young enough to put it together... would they move them? I'm not sure... only one way to find out. Zegras is struggling to be a C, McTavish doing better there... But with Matthews and Tavares here to teach them how to be a good C... Plus if they hit their potential, then you've got your future 2C....

Frank Seravalli (pig) says that the Leafs could/should look at adding Reilly Smith once they acquire a centre.

say any player and Leafs = success

I think Zegras would be a ballsy type of addition. The kind of buy low player that could do very well. He hasn't played center very much though.

McTavish would be great.
