Trades & Free Agency Thread: 2024-2025 - Deadline-ageddon

I don't know how we'd properly compensate Carolina for acquiring Rantanen. Sure, great player and all, but wing is the least position of need, after C/RD... to spend assets on a non-need seems silly to me, but maybe there is a way to address everything? I don't have confidence in Tre to do such things though.
Unless it’s Knies it makes 0 sense for Carolina. At that point it doesn’t make much sense for Toronto.

Friedman on 32 thoughts:
- If Rantanen is available, the Leafs will be interested. Kept saying this is something you can't count Tre out of
- Poured cold water on Schenn, would love to have him but will be tough to acquire + STL is back in the playoff race
- Leafs will look for insurance on D
- said he would be "floored" if the leafs do not add a forward

Treliving talks about adding a center since training camp and the biggest name they are chasing is a winger. Makes no sense to me in any way.

Yeah realistically, if I'm Carolina I would be self-renting him first and foremost. If not, he goes out west to a team like LA who has a lot more assets than Toronto does

I don't think the C aspect would be as much of an issue if we get Mikko, though. The major problem is depth scoring and you just added a top 5 playoff scorer in the league

I think we probably circle back to that Laughton + Ristolainen deal. I'd be okay with it if Ristolainen is at 50%. Have been watching him a little more recently and he looks much different than he looked in Buffalo and the first little bit in Philly.

Got some Zadorov in him.

I can see that. Not sure you'll get Risto at 50% and Laughton without giving up a ton, but I think one of the 2 would be attainable. If Treliving can pull off both, I think that would be pretty good all things considered.

Sometimes talent is talent and you just go for the best player instead of fit. Let's see

Yeah the price for Rantanen will be interesting. I don't think Caroline will get anywhere near the return they gave up unless Rantanen signs an extension with that team. That said, will Carolina looks to get impact players in return or are they okay with prospects and just throwing their season?

It feels as though Carolina threw away this season with the trade

Knies is already twice the player Cozens is and will sign roughly the same contract as Cozens 7mill deal. What, if anything, will this accomplish for Toronto?

If they offer Cozen and Tuch then maybe you think about dealing Knies.

In this instance, it does fit a need too. The single biggest issue we've had for years is playoff scoring. You can add one of the best finishers in the league and can pair him beside an elite chance generator in Nylander

You run a duo of Matthews - Marner, Nylander - Rantanen while getting elite goaltending from Stolarz? That's a tough team to beat

The challenge with Risto, is who do you play him with? Zamula is a good defensive player, and between him, and how Torts has him playing, his defensive warts have been masked. Of course, throughout most of this career, he's been weak defensively.....

So what is our MAIN need... someone to help with Rielly, who is weak defensively.

If you ask me, getting a player in Risto, who needs a strong defensive partner, to pair with Rielly, who needs a strong defensive partner... when neither are strong defensively, is a recipe for disaster.

No thanks. Unless it's a star RHD, I don't think trading Knies makes much sense. True Power Forwards are very hard to find in this game.

That's where I am at. How do we replace Knies. Getting Rantanen signed works though it means letting Marner go whicnI am ok with.

Bit of a survivorship bias question because when things work out, all of a sudden of course that fit was there
Can you name an example of a trade where the player fit made no sense but the player was so talented it worked out?

I only ask because this thought process gives me Tyson Barrie PTSD.

Rantanen isn't going to be free to get, we don't have a lot assets or cap space. The point of make additions at the deadline is to bolster depth and add to an area of weakness -- not go sideways.

Treliving is not a big deadline trader anyway so it won't happen.

We also have an abundance of forwards, with Jarnkrok back.

I wouldn't be surprised if we get back some lower assets for depth guys. I can see Dewar being traded for a 4th for example, to replenish our draft pick board. Especially if we're going to be getting another forward

Dewar, Reaves and Kampf should all be in the mix to be dumped. Dewar in particular has been such a let down this season, could head up on waivers if he doesn't wake up.

I don't know if Dewar has gotten a completely fair shake. Injuries hasn't helped either.

I think Berube has a hard-on for Kampf. Im practically penciling in Kampf as a regular, along with the main guys. This is the way I see it if we potentially get Laughton or another center

------------------------------------

Knies - Mathews - Marner
Domi - Tavares - Nylander
McMann - Laughton - Jarnkrok
Lorentz - Kampf - *Paccioretty
*Holmberg
*Robertson
Dewar (traded)
Reaves (Maybe traded? Doubt real value)

I think the challenge on Rantanen is the ask. He's turned down allegedly $12.5 mil x 8 from Carolina, and $11.5-12 from the Avalanche. He apparently is looking for between $13-14 mil. Would you be good with signing Rantanen for over $13 mil?
