Trades & Free Agency Thread: 2024-2025 - Deadline-ageddon

Put an extension deadline on Matthew Knies and if he doesn't sign, use him for a Cozens trade.

One thing I've always been a fan of, is making moves well before the deadline. It gives the new player more time to build chemistry with the team, and it also gives you time to judge if you need to make other moves. Plus, I think at the deadline, prices tend to be inflated.

Interesting article discussing players that could be moved, or not...

Agreed. Prices only go up. I think most of the time it’s a game of chicken. Nobody wants to move first.

Prices go up and then way down. Lots of sellers get left holding the bag.

We hold all the cards with Knies, that really wouldn't be necessary. Knies would be the last player I would trade on this team.

Knies is more important than Marner. The only thing he las left to do is perform in the playoffs this year. He looks like a winner though from what I can see.

Burke said the same thing on a leafs podcast the other day. Prices go up and he preferred to do his shopping early

They also go way down at the deadlines final hour. May not get what you want but can usually get something you need.

Burke may be a great Lawyer but, lol, he certainly was not good with acquisitions, cap or filling coaching and manager positions. Nobody wanted him after.

His top boy, Nonis got compared to a Potato and the potato was deemed smarter!

There’s a lot of good players available but I’m trying to lower my expectation to 2 total trades:

To TOR: Geekie (50% retained)
To BOS: FLA 2025 2nd, Grebenkin

To CHI: 2026 1st, Domi, Robertson
To TOR: Murphy, Kurashev

Waive: Timmins, Reaves

Knies-Matthews-Marner
Kurashev-Geekie-Nylander
McMann-Tavares-Jarnkrok
Lorentz-Kampf-Holmberg
Pacioretty-Dewar

McCabe-Tanev
Rielly-Murphy
OEL-Myers
Benoit

This 23 man roster would leave the Leafs about $8000 under the cap.

St. Louis is now 6-2-2 in their last ten, and only one point out of a Wild Card spot... though they've played two more games than Calgary or Vancouver. At this point, it would be unlikely that they will be sellers. Personally, I would have loved adding Parayko, though the cost would have been high, and the odds that they would sell him unlikely give the hole it would open up. Plus, there is no indication that they plan on rebuilding, or retooling at this juncture. Schenn... expiring UFA, getting older, you could have made that argument better, but with them competing, I don't think they'll sell. For that, I am thankful. The ask is far too much, for the player he is.

The closer it gets to the deadline, the less there is clarity as to what we'll do, if we do anything. A week of wringing the GM's hands, and accomplishing little seems more and more likely.

Prices will drop the closer you get to the deadline. Tre needs to dig in and not panic. If other GMs do not soften, I am fine with rolling the dice with what we got and keep your bullets for future runs. If the core cannot get it done again, they need to go in another direction this summer.

Like the author, I was surprised that Kyle Palmieri is only 34 years old. He had 30 goals last year and is trending for 30 this year. He has a right shot, can take face-offs, plays a bit of C here and there. Maybe not a top choice for the Leafs, but not a bad option.

Has anybody been following Romanov's career? He's an LHD but he's pretty cheap.

Friedman on 32 thoughts:
- If Rantanen is available, the Leafs will be interested. Kept saying this is something you can't count Tre out of
- Poured cold water on Schenn, would love to have him but will be tough to acquire + STL is back in the playoff race
- Leafs will look for insurance on D
- said he would be "floored" if the leafs do not add a forward

Very likely re-signed by the Isles. He’s up over been pretty good the last 2 years and NYI only have 1 other NHL caliber LD.

Rantanen is the kind of winger we need. I hope it happen but know it wont

I don't know how we'd properly compensate Carolina for acquiring Rantanen. Sure, great player and all, but wing is the least position of need, after C/RD... to spend assets on a non-need seems silly to me, but maybe there is a way to address everything? I don't have confidence in Tre to do such things though.
