If Strome was at #5 I'd consider trading down a few spots and taking Rantanen or Crouse.

I'd give up as much as a couple 3rd Rd picks to move up to 3 and guarantee one of Hanifin/Marner.

Hanifin/Strome/Marner at 5

John/Tripp and Chip pumping up Crouse scares the hell out of me.

Do you remember John and Tripp pumping up Fluery or Lindholm? No? That's because they were pumping up guys the Hurricanes didn't take.

They are likely talking about him up because a couple of the leading scouting organizations (ISS and NHL CS) have him ranked #5, where the Canes are picking.

Other: Make a decision on the clock.

I don't think the Canes have any intention of even considering taking Marner (which I think is the right decision coincidentally) so if he's BPA at #5, the choice is between taking who we want at #5 or trading back to a spot where we can probably still get our guy while picking up more assets.

If BPA at #5 is Hanifin, I don't even answer the phone as it's ringing off the hook...no offer will suffice.

I'd be surprised if trading up was a realistic option. Teams don't trade down cheaply at that stage of the draft.

I'll also be slightly surprised if either Arizona or Toronto don't do something unexpected to change our set of options by the time we get on the clock.

I’d be really surprised to see Carolina move from #5 in either direction. Over the past 10 years, only 1 Top 5 pick has been moved (Islanders’ 2008 1st.) I’m ignoring the Kessel trade as the Leafs didn’t knowingly move a Top 5 selection. So, moving up in the draft must be cost prohibitive and/or the holders of those prime picks are comfortable where they are in the draft order and have no desire to move down.

If there was ever a situation in the past few Drafts in which a team might move down then I could see the Canes/Phoenix trade making sense. Marner, Strome, and Hanifin are really neck-and-neck for the 3-5 spots. If Phoenix is fine with Marner or Strome and knows the Canes would take Hanifin then why not collect an extra couple picks or prospects? Even Coyote fans have agreed to that on the main board. It is probably unlikely but it does make some sense.
