Adam Graves is 10th all-time in points, 3rd in goals, in Rangers history.

9th in games played.

I wouldn't be devastated if he re-signed, but I'd hope that it doesn't impede Girardi dealings if we did sign him.

If you are happy to pretty much go again next season with what we have now less Richards and Boyle, but with Miller up, you can give Cally $6m, Girardi $5.5m, Zucc $4m plus little raises for other UFA/RFAs then you can do it with about $3m spare in the cap.

To me it looks pretty light on up front (Stepan, Brass, Miller is a very iffy C group) but it is certainly doable in the short term

I agree, though I suspect (for no reason I can think of) that Girardi will be easier to sign than Cally

I know the whole buzz has been about Callahan the last few days, but it's pretty surprising to not hear a peep from G's camp, or anything about him resigning.

Maybe Both sides are confident they can make a deal and the Rangers said let us see if we can hammer a deal out with cally or make a move, so that the Rangers feel comfortable finalizing the deal with Girardi.

Also if Girardi were to sign like today or yesterday it would magnify all the buzz with Callahan and they are looking for quiet things down again.

Carp had said that the callahan rumors were hanging over the atmosphere of the game and sam rosen's tribute. Both sides probably wanted the buzz to go away

You know, I support trading Callahan, but Ive been trying to call out the silly "he sucks, get rid of him stuff." Now, allow me to come to the aid of Adam Graves who was AT LEAST as good of a player as Callahan.

I dont think most people on this board are old enough to remember him. But if people are going to fawn about Callahan's "intangibles," they would have a coronary when it came to Graves'. The man was basically Messier's body guard the entire time he was here.

Ryan Callahan may have the most intangibles in the league. Look at what the Olympic committee said of him.

I hope we re-sign him. Even if his playing style makes him more injury prone as he ages, #24 brings a lot to the table, and I'd like to see him retire as a Ranger. On a quasi-related note, for some reason, he reminds me of Ryan Smyth.

I think Girardi is very close. I think they are going to wait to announce his contract after the Callahan trade to soften the blow. Or they announce them both at the same time.

Not for Callahan. They would want Staal or Girardi with Callahan in any deal there.

Ok and if you wanted to borrow a pen from me for a day I'd like for you to send over a dump truck of hundred dollar bills as compensation. Doesn't mean it's gonna happen.

In reality though, how many players sign to what they first come to the table with?

Do we really think they're expecting to get 6m for 7, or are they starting high to come down to a good number?

Good question.

The Rangers have a month to figure this out before the situation gets worse.

I don't agree with the way you reason at all.

You are only arguing why we should not keep Cally. In short stating that there is a risk that he might not be worth what he gets.

The thing is, we got to pay someone. Will the option be better? A Stewart making Cally's money instead? A Wolski? A Frolov? A Marcel Hossa?

You always end up paying someone. As I am sure we all know, there are big risks with bringing in new guys too. There is no guarantee that they will be worth it either.

I definitely think Cally is very valuble to us and would be for years to come. He is only 28 y/o. There extreme market value he has will also apply for any alternative we get to replace him, be it a younger player who just are getting into arbitration years or another player. I definitely don't think its an easy decision to let him go.

As a general rule, I agree with this sentiment and, a little OT, I respect your opinion in general. However, this is a different situation: we have Fast ready to take over third line RW duties, and if not, we have Kristo. One of them will be ready next October. Meanwhile, Nash and MZA are very good for the top two RW.

I'd rather spend this money elsewhere. If we sign both Cally and Girardi, we can't sign Stastny even if we dump Brad. Ultimately, I'd prefer to have Stastny and Fast (plus some youth we'd get for Cally) over Callahan and Lindberg. And if we don't luck out with Stastny, the money is still better off being spent elsewhere.

You might find the chart in this article even more convincing of that. :sarcasm:

This is the most hilarious **** I've ever read.

Callahan doesn't have to do anything. Sather can't police any conversations between Bartlett and the other teams. Sather gave them permission. A team can easily tell Bartlett that they would be willing to meet the 7 year and $6M plus asking price in July without giving the Rangers assets. In MLB,a team will give another team permission to discuss contract with the player only after the teams have agreed on trade compensation. They request a 72 hour window from the MLB commissioner's office. Johan Santana, Curt Schilling. Buffalo could be willing to give Callahan $7M per for 7 years in the summer and they don't want to trade assets for him. Just because the Rangers want Callahan to sign a contract with another team so they get more in the trade doesn't mean Bartlett/Callahan have to play along. They play out the year wherever that is and they negotiate the contract in July.

The trouble with collusion is that another party can always come and bust the plan. Who says that BS would be the only team to give Cally 7/6? Another team that doesn't suck might do that and now BS doesn't have Cally.

Also, another team might agree to Cally's demand to do 7/6 while giving the Rangers decent value in return. Then Cally doesn't make it to the FA market and everyone colluding with him stands there watching. Or the Rangers could agree on a contract with him.

There's another problem: a secret is something that only one person knows. While it's possible to get away with this once or twice when the GM and the agent have a "special" relationship, it's hard to always operate this way without getting the anger of all the other GMs, fines and loss of draft picks as compensation for screwing with players.

You're going to neglect all he does for this team? His intangibles?

All he does for this team is being lessened by the new coach. Thats a fact.

And no, Im not downplaying it. I also am sternly against giving a guy 7 years for heart and intangibles.

Pretty much. Callahan shouldn't be asking for the lion's share that he is. Unfortunately he isn't playing well. But intangibles aren't enough to offer him that much... He isn't a 35 goal scorer or some big offensive threat and he has been pretty stagnant these last few years.

At the moment. I don't think he'll keep Pouliot on the Powerplay much longer, and I expect after our next loss, he's going to shift the left wings on the Nash line and the Richards line, as both Kreider and Hags have gone a bit stale where they are. Kreider-Richards-Callahan could be very effective, and the fanbase will get that Hagelin-Stepan-Nash line they've had an idiotic rager for.
