I guess to be fair to him he just came over this year from the KHL, so I think he's a prospect in that he's very obviously still figuring out the NHL (and hasn't been languishing in the A or being benched or whatever).
Doesn't matter anyway cause he's a smurf. :sarcasm:

Avs fan here

Not going to comment on Georgiev, but if you want to tank for the 1st OA pick, you made the right call

As for Kovalenko, he was well-liked on the Avs board. Maybe a bit too hyped up sometimes, but he's a more than serviceable NHLer. He doesn't do anything particularly well or terribly, and can take some bad penalties, but he goes to the dirty areas and he won't hurt you defensively (had some struggles with coverage early on, mostly due to playing in the top-6)

His skillset should give him a decent NHL career and I hope he does well with you guys!

I like the trade. As others have mentioned, it will be interesting to see the direction the Sharks go now. Georgiev for the full on tank, or we get Askarov. I’ll be happy with either option. If it’s Georgiev and the tank, might as well find trading partners quickly for Ceci/Granlund/etc.
Tank with Georgiev.

I think this just guaranteed that Granny is our shiney TDL chip this year. I hope he continues to crush it.

Curious if they tank with Georgiev or bury him and call up Askarov
He lost it mentally with the Avalanche, but if he has a good start and can mentally start from zero, Georgiev could be valuable.

Georgiev was good with Avalanche, especially the first season.

He will try his best too, because contract season.

You need to give him a chance, if good keep and if he blows it.. Then dump his ***. That would be my approach.

Absolutely true. There's potential. Good third line player for example. He needs a bit more time to get used to NHL though.

If he really shows out at Four Nations that could help alleviate doubts about his usefulness in big games.

If the Sharks are going to play Georgiev as a backup I honestly think they'd be better off paying him to stay home and running with someone else. He was well known for not being well liked in New York when he was the backup, and he seemed to throw tantrums whenever he was losing his starter spot in Colorado.

I think you will like Kovalenko. He's got sparks of creativity and skill, high motor, though he doesn't quite have the high end speed, or pure physical strength that would really make him standout.

I actually see it differently. I think Grier was going to trade one and re-sign the other, depending on who came knocking. This to me tells me Granny is sticking around.

Aww man, my kid loved Blackwood. We watched the Florida game together the other night and he was so excited every time Blackwood made a save (he's 10). He's been playing Ice Hockey for a few years now, and he just recently really got into watching the Sharks with me (which I can finally do again) and now they traded his second favorite player lol (Celebrini being his first of course).

I did warn him this was likely, but he's going to be heart broken tonight. blah!

I hope we don't trade everyone. I think some roster continuity is important.

I still hope we keep Granlund but I can see a trade happen too. Think it ultimately depends on what Granny wants.

But yeah, I hear you on continuity but I also think this is sort of the summer where we aggressively try and build a team that can sneak into to the playoffs and for that we need some trade chips in pick form.

Just tell him Blackwood changed his number…

Haha, he's excited to see more of Askarov too so hopefully once Askarov gets to play consistently he'll have him to root for. My kid started Ice Hockey as part of the Golden Knights youth system so he was pretty much a Golden Knights fan till recently, but I've been slowly moving him towards the Sharks :P

We will likely still have Toffoli, Goodrow, Zetterlund, Wennberg, Grundstrom, Walman, Liljegren, Ferraro, maybe Kostin and Kunin, plus whoever we add.

If Celebrini and Smith and Askarov and so on can't develop into stars because that's insufficient "veteran presence," then the problem is with Celebrini, Smith, and Askarov and not with the Sharks.

Teams don't stagnate during their rebuilds because they lack sufficient "veteran presence" to "teach the kids to play the right way," they stagnate because they either overestimated the quality of their prospects, jumped the gun and tried to compete when they still had a bottom-feeder roster, or were incompetent in building a balanced, competitive roster. Star prospects should not need a certain minimum of veteran babysitters to hold their hand and teach them to become stars.

Granlund is not going to be a member of the next good Sharks team. Odds are he's retired by the time we are ready to compete. If we can get a 1st or even a 2nd for him, we trade him, period, because otherwise we are either paying him way too much, or we are losing him in free agency and have nothing to show for it. Let us remember that Granlund was a cap dump who fortunately has performed wildly in excess of expectations, despite his age and history.

I think if we can somehow land Schaefer or even a Martone/Misa, we will have a bunch of pieces all at the right age and right fit to really make a decade long push for the Cup in a few years. Of course, it would still require a lot of luck and having these guys actually pan out, but its rare to have a potential 1 and 2C, potential top line Wingers, potential top pair D, potential No.1 goalie in the org all in their teens or early 20s.

Its very exciting to think, but also I can't help but worry about how we will Shorks this situation up. Either way, I'd much rather get a top 3 pick this year rather than force a few extra wins for a better culture or presence on the team. That stuff can start from next season.

Will be interesting how Grier and co proceed with the goalie situation. Right now I'm inclined to keep Askarov in the AHL since he's playing very well and the Cuda might go on a little run. I'd rather Askarov continue to play consistently than split starts up in the NHL. For tank purposes, roll with Vanicek and Georgiev until the deadline and then flip one, probably Vanicek lol. Sign a solid backup next season and Askarov competes until he establishes himself as the starter.

The things I worry about are Georgiev potentially being a cancer in the room and/or his play. If there are any issues at all, keep him away from the kids. If he stinks up the joint, I'm worried about that snowballing too. Grier has to play that fine line of getting a high pick, but the team still has to show growth this season. Losing is one thing, losing consistently in the same manner as last year is another.

Good deal to me. I hope Kovalenko can show us something. The 2nd will prove more valuable than keeping Blackwood around the rest of this season. I do hope he considers the Sharks an option in the offseason because he'd be a great tandem partner with Askarov but if he works out in Colorado, he's going to be on to bigger and better things.

I'm cool with this, try to recoup Georgiev's value and deal him at the deadline. Even if it's for like a 5th or 6th. Maybe they can deal Vanacek as well.

I’m conflicted. Value wise, this is a great deal. I mean I only wanted a 2nd but we got a young(ish) player that hasn’t really been given a chance in Colorado. Georgiev has no value and is nothing but oh well expiring contract.

Player wise though, Blackwood has been so good for us. Kept us in multiple games and has given us a chance to win in most games he plays. Is he an elite starter? No absolutely not but I’ve been liking being competitive in most games (ignoring last few). Vanecek I don’t know how well he can do it.
