HF Habs: Trade Proposal Thread #93: Y'all got any more of those 2nd line centers out there?

No team will eat Price’s contract till bonus has been paid by Habs which happens only on Sept 1st.
Isn’t that bonus covered in large part via insurance? If not, then the timing is evidently not as good for a trade in Sept.

No, Price’s $2M salary earned over the course of the season is covered by insurance, his $5.5M one time bonus is covered by the team only (insurance exempt).

That’s why I posted last week, Habs sit w $8.67M cap space (18/23 roster) + can go over cap by 10% during summer ($9.55M) = $18.2M spend availability

Can potentially free up additional $950K, if they deal that contract ($10.5M AAV) before season opener

If Laine gets trades, either the Habs sweeten the pot, or there's a bad contract coming back the other way.

While he doesn't scream "Rod the bod" fit, after yet another disappointing exit I could see the Canes eager to roll the dice, especially if we eat some $.

Canes have ~30M$ in cap room & only 1-2 roster spots to fill.

Aho & Laine I believe we're linemates on that epic Finnish junior squad, if there's any relationship there, a no/low asset cost addition of Laine @ 5 or 6M$ for 1 season might well be more appealing than having to dole out term & high cap hit for any other forward upgrades on the UFA market.

I think you can trade Laine at 50% with a 3rd round pick attached and probably get away with it. He's still a great shooter. He would make Chicago PP better still. It's not like Laine didn't help us a but with his PP goals.

Won’t all teams have attained their cap floor by the time the season opener rolls around? Which defeats the purpose.

I would offer them Laine for Marchessault

I wouldn't.

One year of term left > 4 years left of term.

Marchessault is a high-energy player, and smart/skilled/determined, but he's also yet another short-king to add to our already-small top-6, and also 34 years-old going on 35 which is right there in age for players to really start falling off a cliff play-wise.

Maybe Marchessault ends up an ageless wonder ala Pavelski, and maybe he craters harder than Stamkos did last year. We don't know yet and have no way to know as development/regression through age isn't linear.

But the horrible possibility of Marchessault falling off a cliff as a player in our uniform and occupying a roster spot, depriving a younger player of playing time as a possible 4-year anchor of a contract far offsets the positives of the corresponding best-case scenario.

To reiterate, with 4 years left on Marchessault's deal, I wouldn't take the risk of a Laine-Marchessault trade as that is NOT a gamble whose risk would match the reward in my opinion.

Which brings me to my last point, namely that we shouldn't/probably won't even have to take on a bad contract if our management decides to move-away from Laine this offseason with the cap going up and teams no longer feeling great pressure to be cap-compliant.

If we gave a little sweetener to the Sharks or a similar other team, I actually think they would be willing to take on Patrik Laine on their team as Laine did score 20 goals for us and can be a potent PP option if properly catered-to.

What would you think about acquiring Matt Beniers from Seattle.

Seattle is shallow in LHD, in the NHL and their system.

They've got Wright, Stephenson (until 2031) and Schultz (1 year left) in the NHL and Berkly Catton in their system as centers.

Would you be ready to give Guhle+ to get Beniers?

I know, it depends on the ? , but let assumed it's reasonable.

Or better, what ? would you be ready to add to make it happens, if you're ready to sacrifice Guhle to make it happen.
I dunno, but Seattle might be willing to trade Wright before Beniers.

He has accepted his role in the bottom 6 and is loyal to the Habs and the fanbase because no one gave up on him.

If he's healthy, he will continue to play hard till his contract ends. He could have sat out of the lineup for 20 games this season, but played through it; that's a guy who has bought in.
If he’s healthy
If he doesn’t give up on the season
If he “plays within his role”

Lots of ifs with Anderson

I’m willing to bet the arc of his career with the Habs won’t change. He’s been far more bad/unavailable than good overall.

And you know what? A good GM would sell high. Eyes on the prize: Anderson will not be a part of any winning Habs lineup.

The deal becomes Price + 2026 3rd or 4th rd to a team that has cap space and wants a free asset, Vs finding a team that needs Price to hit the cap floor.

Canes were reportedly amongst the teams in the running for Laine last summer, except they weren’t willing to take on entire cap hit unlike Habs & Wild

Just San Jose for teams they will be near the cap minimum.
the price contractt can have multiple benifits to a tteam like SJ.
Being a young team, they have have to ice a few high paid vets to reach the floor.
Getting price contract, will not only be rewarding on the bottom line , but will allow them to break in more young low salary players and still be at the floor.... while of course tanking as well

i thought the bonus is july 1st.

Just read an article that says you are correct it is spet 1st, however it says at least a part of the bonus covered by insurance.

While we all talk about centres for Montreal, here’s a name to consider, Kent Johnson. Center for Columbus, 22 years old, 6’1”, well known by Hughes.
I probably wouldn’t bank on any of the young forwards in Columbus moving anytime soon. Waddell has been pretty adamant his plan is to keep them together and build around them.

Voronkov plays on the top line too.
i think Kent Johnson would be someone who could fit in montreal

Without a doubt but he was struggling in CBJ before last season and I had hope he could be pried … that’s not happening after this past season

Kent Johnson’s an uber talent

When was the last time a Marner caliber 100pts player + age ever hit UFA?

Answer: Panarin

None of McDavid, Makar etc will ever hit the market next summer

No team will deal a young 2C for a “fair price” unless they’re underperforming like Dach was

The only realistic solution is a short term signing of a vet for 2-3 years - Tavares would be ideal
Depending on the term, I would sign Tavares. If it's two to three years, we really couldn't do better. That would give us time to develop Hage and provide Suzuki with an excellent 2 C.
