HF Habs: Trade Proposal Thread #93: Y'all got any more of those 2nd line centers out there?

One of three scenarios; He trades for immediate help on offense or he moves up to pick Desnoyers or he stays pat and drafts two solid prospects.

If he trades for immediate help, he will be more aggressive for the rest of the summer. If he picks Desnoyers, he will have more leeway from the fan base because the future top 6 C will be in the org... if he stays pat and drafts 16 and 17, all eyes will be on him.
They would need to add quite a bit to picks 16 and 17, considering how high Desnoyers is likely to go off the board. Plus, these kinds of deals don’t tend to happen.

Hagel was not traded for too cheap. This is a preposterous comment. He had fewer than two seasons of games in his NHL career and was traded for a massive outlay. The criticism was that TBL was ripped off and could've gotten a better player for that amount. TBL proved everybody wrong and showed that they had indeed scouted Hagel right.

This is all irrelevant to the point: draft picks are currency. The Habs spent too much to acquire Newhook (at the time of the trade) and it's been a negative outcome since then.

I didn't say Hagel was traded for too cheap, you said "TBL was mocked for going "cheap" to acquire a player who wasn't that impressive", which was always a ridiculous take. I said Tampa going cheap on Hagel was always a bad take.

And this is an ass backwards way to look at things.

Players that fit Newhooks profile (high draft pick, highly successful NCAA career) cost what Montreal paid. Period. Players that fit Hagel's profile (effective NHLer in mid-20s with an incredibly cheap cap hit) cost what Tampa paid. Period.

The question is should Newhook have been the trade target at that price. There's a fair argument that he didn't show enough in Colorado to be worth paying what Montreal did, but its a very HFBoards view to right the trade off when he's only 24.

And its still preferable to take gambles like that, then Bergevin era moves of shuffling the deck chairs with hockey trades or massively overpaying for UFAs like Alzner.

Newhook was traded after three years of an ELC and a decline in performance year on year. Period. His draft year performance is less relevant than his NHL performance.

It's very HFBoards to insist "he's only XX!" to deflect from an otherwise undeniably simple criticism. If Newhook turns it around when he's only 25, so be it, but up to this point he's not at any point been worth what was traded to acquire him.

And its still preferable to take gambles like that
Not for Newhook, definitely not.

Draft picks are indeed currency, but if you think the Canadian dollar is worth $2 US, you will make the wrong purchasing and sale decisions.

Check out several websites, like

This one says that 31+37 = 245 "points" and 16-OA equals 272 points (10% better)

So 31OA + 37OA is lower value than 16OA. Newhook over-performs at 16OA, or at worst it's par.

Furthermore, Newhook commands a below-average AAV.

And he still has upside.

Good value as a complementary piece. The price for a stud 2C would need to be quite a bit higher.

I have a feeling Hughes goes after Bennett if he's available this offseason. I don't see any trade available for a 2C that fits the Habs timeline or is reasonable in terms of cost. Bennett, while on the older side (soon to be 29) brings some bite to the Habs and may make a nice compliment to Demidov who can make plays.

Quartexx client can't hurt...

Funny to see many bashing Hughes for not picking up Dubois but the guy just picked up his 3A in 9th playoff game with no Gs. If that was in Montreal he'd be ran out of town

Dach had a much higher ceiling than Romanov. This is not fanboyism, it's realism. Please try realism, it's useful.

Nobody dreamed of Romanov getting drafted in the top 10, never mind 3OA.

In his D+1, Dach was the 5th best F for Chicago in the playoffs, with 6 points in 9 playoff games (better than Demidov, who is even a few months older!). In Romanov's D+3, he was healthy scratched in 18 of the Habs' 22 playoff games, behind really low performance players like Kulak, Gustafsson, and Merrill (!)

In Romanov's D+4. he was outproduced by Arber Xhekaj at the same age, and similar production to Jayden Struble. In Dach's D+4, he produced like a 2C and the consensus was that he could possibly challenge Suzuki for 1C soon. I invite you to go back and read the posts on this board as well as articles by multiple NHL analysts outside of Montreal.

Dach's knee injuries do not erase his ceiling at the time of the trade.
Obvious post.

You're arguing with revisionists.

Try to trade for Danault and sign Duchene (maybe trade a pick for MD exclusive rights and overpay a bit?)

That would bring niiice center depth and leaves assets for Defence

Dont know how much Danault would cost, i’m guessing not that much but I don’t think we would be the only ones interested

Devils will be trying to make some changes, might need some cap space and are stacked at right D:

Could Dougie Hamilton be available? Would they be willing to accept picks/prospects if we take he full cap hit?
They need size and grit. We got what to offer?

Anderson - Danault - Gallagher
Heineman - Evans - Armia
Newhook

That would be a fantastic bottom 6!
I hope that the Habs move on from Armia.

Don’t get me wrong I like the guy and he helps the PK but they need to start to incorporate rookies into the lineup.

If the Habs go through the summer and have 12 forwards signed it leaves little for rookies to stay motivated. Keep one spot open for; Beck, Kapanen, Xhekaj, Farrell, Davidson, Roy. Have them go through summer knowing that there is a NHL spot and they just need to beat out the competition to earn that spot. Internal competition is always a great thing.

We're one year from those rookies, so let's keep Armia.
