HF Habs: Trade Proposal Thread 92 Waiting on the DRAFT Edition

Habs had the best second line centerman in their line up two seasons ago: Sean Monahan. Of course they got picks for him, but picks is not everything. Now, the same Monahan could lead Columbus to the Playoffs.
They have Hage to look forward to.

I agree. However I also understand not wanting to commit long term to him and maybe we don't draft Demidov if he stays.

Free agency should happen before the draft, like the NFL. That way, if teams missed out on the player they wanted, they can use the picks to trade for one.

Example : Habs want to sign Duchene, if they do, they can keep their picks. If they don't, they know they have to trade picks at the draft for someone.

There's just too many "what ifs" with the current setup.
I agree. I was thinking about this today.
Really hope they land Duchene. It’d suck if we missed out on draft day trade to acquire a top 6 C and then strike out on free agency too

Bennett is not going to aged well and he’s gonna cost way more than his true value.
Agreed 100%. Look at Anderson. He was a beast in the playoff for Columbus but he has been a huge liability for the Habs the past few seasons.

He’s not a big points producer but I have no problem with Anderson this year. He’s laying big hits, fighting, playing well on the PK. But yea, we agree playing physical tend to have a toll on players in theirs’ 30s.

At the end of the day, Bennett is a 50pts players and if he leave Fla, someone’s probably gonna give him a contract he doesnt deserve. Can see a 7x7-8mil.

Anderson's game is for playoffs. You can't expect guys like him to play that style when the team is bottom 5 and out of the playoff picture by Christmas.

They aren't gonna lack for scoring to the point you should pay 14m for Marner.

Can get Ehlers on FA for a fraction of the cost and get similar playoff production
Ehlers and his 14 career playoff points?

After all this talk of needing playoff warriors? lol

Exactly but what is the point of carrying a contract like that for a whole regular season + many years. Just make this type of acquisition at the trade deadline like top contender do.

His health has been the issue and he doesn't command 14m like Marner does.

And I was providing an alternative for the player archetype.

I'd be targeting guys who can actually throw a hit, win a board battle, even if they don't score as much in the regular season.

Simping for Mitch Marner is pretty crazy. It's just ignoring his playoff play for his entire career.

Second line center and a top 4 defenseman are MTLs needs imo

And no, not a top 4 Matheson type. A top 4 stabilizing force type defenseman not a Methhead on ice . Would love to find a RHD who can slot with Hutson next yr, pray Reinbacher is ready to pair with Guhle soon or at worst Carrier though i dont know if thats ideal.

Its actually quite crazy this team is fighting for a spot with a sub 30 point second line center. Newhooks production is nothing short of pathetic given ice time, PP time and role

UFAs will be hard, since the Habs will want a stopgap at the age of most of the UFAs and not offer 5+ years to them. Well maybe not to Duchene since he's 34.

I would not offer 14M (I know, he won't accept less, etc) but I would still try to convince Marner joining. If it fails, fine, we wait next year for the likes of Kaprizov or Necas or Connor. I do not want to 'settle' for the like of Boeser or Ehlers. I want to commit to a star producer ideally that have 90 + pts upside.

MTL is getting to the point where acquisition have to be beyond just talent. they need to build a contending team that address holes. Grit on the top 6 is lacking.

Exactly. Demidov, Caufield and Suzuki and whoever they can get to swap Laine out with, is more than enough talent in the top 6.. Slafkovsky has top 6 talent with a big frame and is applying that more and more.. they need more jam with skill in their top 9. 50-70 points from guys who throw hits, win board battles and score around the net is worth way more in the palyoffs than 100 point Nancy's who cry in the playoffs.

I dont think they should look for a stop gap second line center. Even if you believe Hage is, 5 yrs down the road isnt out of this world. Could still be two yrs from NHL, add in often a yr at wing in NHL. At worst he learns with a second line center he takes over for 4-5 yrs from now

I do get what your are saying though. It will be a balancing act but you also want to capitalize on nice contracts you have

Yeah I think Dach and Ehlers could have great chemistry, developed while riding the stationary bike on the bench during practices.

I love Ehlers, draft him almost every year in fantasy, but he's always injured.

Get Marner. A Selke candidate, one of the best defensively and one of the best passer in the game to play with 2 high end scorer.

Slaf - Suzuki - Caufield
Laine - Demidov - Marner
Newhook - Dach - Heineman(?)
Gallagher - Evans - Anderson

The 2c capable UFA centers this season are 30+ (Duchene is 34, Tavares/Nelson are 33), none of them are long term just based on age. Bennett and Suter are the only under 30 (at 28), I would see in a 2c role and think to sign for 5 years...and both are probably re-signing with their team before July 1st.

I personally would go the trade route. Hopefully, NYI shows the door to Lou and make Horvat available. Otherwise, if the Wilds sign both Nelson and Boeser like some rumors are saying, that might make Ek available (still 3 years to his contract, 28). And then Lundell would be an amazing add, but doubful he is ever available, even if the Panthers keep Bennett. Seatler might make Stephenson available, if they want to promote Wright too.
