Naw, a team that has failed clearly has issues that needs addressing. A team that "miraculously" makes the playoffs will make some "fans" angry that he deals roster players from this "successful" team.
He'd be my #1 target headed into FA

Matheson seems like an awesome guy who has done incredible work for the community, there were zero expectations for him and he's definitely done more than expected given what we're asking him to do, he's a phenomenal athlete, and we got a nice 2nd rounder with him, but he cannot be back next year with how we're transitioning away from tanking.

I think they do need another scoring winger.. Laine will need to be changed out. He does not bring enough.
He's still there next year. Habs should use their assets for the current problems before going for luxury upgrades.

The issue is the D is not very good. I hear people complain about usage but Savard is a PK specialist at this point. Someone has to play these minutes. You can trade him at 50% for 1 yrs. you would get a decent return from a top team crunch by the cap looking to add scoring depth.

Boeser and Ehlers are just money acquisitions. Cap rising, lot of money coming off our cap table, including Laine next year.. really not a barrier at all to getting one of them and still being able to trade and get a 2C.

Free agency should happen before the draft, like the NFL. That way, if teams missed out on the player they wanted, they can use the picks to trade for one.
Example : Habs want to sign Duchene, if they do, they can keep their picks. If they don't, they know they have to trade picks at the draft for someone.
There's just too many "what ifs" with the current setup.
