HF Habs: Trade Proposal Thread 92 Waiting on the DRAFT Edition

Problem would be you'd likely have to pay him more than the internal salary cap we've created. He's also another wing. I do like the idea just not sure if it's a capable one.

Yeah I know if he was a center we would back up the Brinks truck for sure. This would all depend on if the organization thinks Demidov would be one day capable of centering a line cause if so it's an amazing move.

You think Knies gets over 8 million? I was thinking in the 6.5-7 range cause you're still buying RFA years.

Why don't we put an offer sheet on Matthew Knies this summer? I'd love to grab that guy and throw him in the top 6 and figure the rest out later.

I feel like we could offer a contract price that the Leafs wouldn't match in their cap structure or if they do we could really hurt them. We aren't ever gonna be trading partners so no need to worry about the bad blood.

This is all contingent on Marner resigning there which I still think is fairly likely. If that happens we could jump all over this guy. Any chance to hurt the Leafs is good with me.

Player like Knies is wrong target for offer sheet as he is clearly considered a top line player by Leafs so in order to get him, you would have to value him at least as Superstar level and I don’t believe that there is enough upside to justify such an offer.

Offer sheet only works when a team values a player higher than the current team - and is willing to pay based on that value. Look at Edmonton and St. Louis last year. Blues targeted two players that they think can contribute in a role bigger than can be offered to them in Edmonton - and paid them accordingly. You cannot offer Knies bigger role than he has in Leafs so you either end up with grossly overpaid contract or not getting the player.

Slaf is signed at 7.6M, why would Knies go below that? I am 100% sure he would get a better offer from many teams around the league. Leafs would match 6.5 in a heartbeat.
Offersheets make sense if you have salary stretched team and you overpay young player for 1-2 years.

Can the "reborn" Josh Anderson have some suitors and fans in the NHL trade market or will Kent Hughes burn his mulligan and fail to strike on this opportunity for a second time?

I'm thinking VAN might be interested in adding some beef to their middle6.

TOR will have too much cap space to be challenged on Knies. Tavares, if he stays, will get less than his current cap hit of 11m.

From Elliotte Friedman's 32 thoughts

3. Was talking with a few teams about the Demidov signing. It’s believed there were two aborted trades at last year’s draft that could have changed history. First was Chicago’s offer to trade their 2026 first-rounder (unprotected) for the fourth pick, which the Blue Jackets turned down. (They took Cayden Lindstrom.) Second was the Canadiens’ own attempt to acquire Trevor Zegras. I’ve never received complete clarity on why that deal didn’t happen, but I suspect it's because the Canadiens changed their minds when they realized Demidov would fall to five — although they were not offering that particular pick in the Zegras deal.

Habs tried to trade for Zegras at the draft if Demidov wasn't there, but nixed a deal when Demidov fell. They weren't trading 5th overall for him obviously, but maybe they were trading a D for Zegras then taking Buium at 5 since the rumor was Montreal really liked Buium.
Got to start questioning Hughes and Gorton’s professional scouting. Zegras would have been a bad acquisition, much like Dach and Newhook.

You turned it upside down? It's passing on Zegras because they got Demidov.

They may still get Zegras at this draft mind you, because Dach has been a disaster I agree.

A lot of this Zegras slander is reminiscent of the PLD slander we heard last year, but now he's the 2C on arguably the best team in the league.:dunno:
Those are not comparables. PLD is a proper center who can play hard game. People were questioning his attitude and long-term contract.
Zegras is not a center, he is one of the softest players in the league. His work ethic is questionable, injury-prone.

Zegras is averaging ever so slightly more hits per game than PLD this season and the exact same work ethic questions surrounded Dubois.

I'm not saying they play a similar style whatsoever, just pointing out that PLD was viewed as a complete dud by most here despite the upside he's previously shown. And now with a change of scenery he's flourishing.

Ryan O'Reilly and his 2 years left on his contract would be the perfect stop gap center.
Hughes already traded with Nashville.
o'Rielly doesn't have a NMC but has said he wants to stay in Nashville and Nashville has said they will respect his wishes unless its a ridiculous overpay as they see him as important to the culture

MSL & Hughes both coached Zegras in youth hockey for a number of years, so they know the human being behind the player well.

Zegras like Hutson is a rink rat - he eats, breathes & sleeps hockey. Ana is simply a bad fit stylistically for his game - little ball of hate & Cronin want players to play a certain style of in your face hard game which simply isn’t in Zegras - his high end skill set would fit seamlessly w current Habs under MSL

Nashville are going nowhere and they need futures , picks and prospects. We could put a good offer on the table. ROR a left handed center who play with grit and have a good work ethic. Hes the perfect canditate to play between Laine and Demidov. He win battles on the board and can pass them the pucks. Plus he can protect our young star Demidov. He would be my first choice if we go with the stop gap route

Trotz said at deadline ROR does not want to leave Nashville and he’ll honor his decision.

Friedman & Lebrun both said ROR doesn’t want to play for a Cdn market

The prospect of playing between Demidov and Laine could maybe change his mind

With the bad season they had, Nashville have no reason to keep him imo. It's like if Toffolli was saying, back in the day, that he wanted to stay in Montreal even if we were losing. Euh?? It's not working like that management side. Ôreilly has no NMC or NTC.

You would expect a team to say they want to keep the player. Thay have to protect the value of their assets

And Zegras is a younger player who's just out of a knee injury him too. So you were high on KneeDach, I think KneeGrass is probably more potent.

I think Duchene and Granlund are possible options on UFA market.

On the trade market, nobody knows. Some might become disponible, some might be taken off the market.

The important thing is we have the assets to go for one if the other team wants future and we know Hughes is ready to overpay oil terms of picks and prospects.
