HF Habs: Trade Proposal Thread 92 Waiting on the DRAFT Edition

The amount of obvious upgrades that also fit the timeline is incredibly limited. The other problem being that multiple teams will be chasing after the exact same thing so we are going to be overpaying by a fair amount for a 2C (assuming they can even find and available one)

Looking around I see (and not all even fit the timeline well)
Horvat
Rossi
Zacha
Granland
Duchene
Pinto
Zegras (who will not be a great fit as the other on the second line are not going to be defensively strong)

I am kind of worried they take another gamble and buy on someone they think might work but hasn’t filled 2C before for any length of time like Mercer

The blues turned it around so there options I can’t imagine are available now I’m looking at the bottom teams and perhaps.

So far we have acquired Newhook, Dach and less recently Dvorak to try and fill this spot, none have worked well and the closet NHL ready 2C prospect we have is Beck and that would require a fairly big jump, but he’s likely more of a 3C

NYR looking to blow it up after this year, i dont think they have a choice? Might be a good time to target Laff.. how about Laine + 1st for Laff?
I don't hate the idea of inquiring about Lafreniere, but I wouldn't do it until we add a 2C and top 4 RHD. I'd make sure we address both of those needs before considering moving any assets for another winger.

I wouldn't do 7*7M for Pionk. We really do not need another mainly offensive D that struggle in the defensive zone.

That is unless you're confident MSL can somehow revive the time where he was better at it.

Personally, Ekblad or Gavrikov (who can play RD) would be the prime targets.

After that I would go after Fabbro or Lindgren (if Gorton and Bobrov are confident they can bring him back to previous years).

If there's no shot on those 4 (or they got no confidence from coach/pro scouting/Bobrov/Gorton) then I would go between Pionk/Ceci or a trade.

I'd easily prefer Pionk over Ekblad or Gavrikov going forward and Lindgren/Fabbro/Ceci aren't even close imo.

I do think his strengths mesh well both with our style of play and with the LDs we have. Only knock would be that he's also undersized and all things being equal it would be nice to add a bit more size and strength to our top 4. If RB makes the jump he was drafted to provide, that concern diminishes.

We'll see. But if all the guys you listed, I wouldn't want any of them signed with term. At that point, might as well run it back with our existing group and let RB for Savard be the only real change

If they do blow it up, doubt they want Laine back.

Only player I'd aggressively target would be Schneider... Could see a Guhle/Schneider pair be really effective long term.

Just because their fans think so doesn't mean their GM is trading a player drafted #1` and signed long term . They especually aren't trading him short of months after trading him

I don't see Laff addressing any need for us whatsoever. We badly need a top 6 center or another RD.

There are other teams who could use Laff more than us and therefore should be willing to give up more assets than we should.

to much pressure for demi to be a centre.
let him rule the wing
If Demidov is concerned about pressure, he’s in the wrong market.

Obviously, he shouldn’t be rushed into anything and the requisite time will be taken to properly evaluate if he’s suited for a centre role eventually or if he should continue as a winger.

Right now, they’ll make his deployment into the lineup as seamless and easy as possible. Just happy we have him, regardless who his linemates are.

From Elliotte Friedman's 32 thoughts

3. Was talking with a few teams about the Demidov signing. It’s believed there were two aborted trades at last year’s draft that could have changed history. First was Chicago’s offer to trade their 2026 first-rounder (unprotected) for the fourth pick, which the Blue Jackets turned down. (They took Cayden Lindstrom.) Second was the Canadiens’ own attempt to acquire Trevor Zegras. I’ve never received complete clarity on why that deal didn’t happen, but I suspect it's because the Canadiens changed their minds when they realized Demidov would fall to five — although they were not offering that particular pick in the Zegras deal.

Habs tried to trade for Zegras at the draft if Demidov wasn't there, but nixed a deal when Demidov fell. They weren't trading 5th overall for him obviously, but maybe they were trading a D for Zegras then taking Buium at 5 since the rumor was Montreal really liked Buium.
Good post, first I heard of D going for Zegras.

Not Kuznetsov as another poster was asking about. He's done and he comes with major character concerns.
I’m just trying to figure it out whos so easily available for what we have to offer?

When you do team by team, there’s not a lot of good 2C available. Everything can change, but people here expect so much (Horvat, Thomas,Crosby). They gonna be disapointed. I hope I’m wrong but we gonna get someone whos not gonna be a concensus, a young guy like Zegras or we gonna sign a vet like Granlund.

I’m really hoping Hughes gonna fletch someone, but it’s easier said than done.

Yeah i could see that too... i think Laff would thrive in the core - dude must be depressed as hell.. NYR like star power, Laine would excite.. maybe Dach? He's got it in him, ive never seen him complain, always seems to work hard... yeah mentally absent here or there but can you blame him with the tish show that is the Rangers?

Id feel bad letting Laine go, i actually really like him on the team... but we gotta give something back with equal star power.. but if Laine truly wants to stay in MTL and resign for the Suzuki special, id keep him.

Imagine the top 6 all being paid the Suzuki Special?

Lafreniere has really nosedive since he signed his big contract. Plus we need a center
I think relative to the entire team he's basically on par with last year.. my point for targeting him now is he is probably at the lowest rating he will be for his ent8re career - i happen to think he will become a true power winger for years. ~70pt type guy..

They got rid of Kakko for peanuts.

Not opposed to Laf, but Laine's likely a better fit/higher impact contributor on our team than him next year... I wouldn't want to spend the assets to acquire him before exhausting options for a top 6 C & top 4 RD.

Columbus could be a good trading partner… Sillinger or Del Bel Belluz? They already have Fantilli, Monahan and Jenner, with Lindstrom as a top C prospect.

Well, they have been looking for center depth for so many years, I do not see them trading any of them. Especially, when they cannot rely on Lindstrom at all due to his back issues. Anyway, I really liked what I saw from Del Bel Belluz, but he is just 21 starting his NHL career. I would see him as slight improvement on Kapanen, we would probably look for more established player.

Why don't we put an offer sheet on Matthew Knies this summer? I'd love to grab that guy and throw him in the top 6 and figure the rest out later.

I feel like we could offer a contract price that the Leafs wouldn't match in their cap structure or if they do we could really hurt them. We aren't ever gonna be trading partners so no need to worry about the bad blood.

This is all contingent on Marner resigning there which I still think is fairly likely. If that happens we could jump all over this guy. Any chance to hurt the Leafs is good with me.

Problem would be you'd likely have to pay him more than the internal salary cap we've created. He's also another wing. I do like the idea just not sure if it's a capable one.
