We are past the reclamation project time.

We need proven, quality center.
You are never pass the reclamation project. Buy low remain the key to a good trade at any time.

If KH feel like a player as more to offer and you can have him for cheap, you should try. What we are past it the time to stock pile 3rd and 4th round pick.

We need to keep improving the talent on our roster. We aren't yet at the "pay whatever price to add Brock Nelson" phase.

Plus, a well run organization is never past the talent acquisition time, nor the opportunistic asset management time.

If Zegras wasn’t buddies with Caufield, would he even be linked to us?
Multiple insiders says he’s available and we are searching for a C over 2 years. Only make sense. People want the perfect player for two mids first rounder in a meh draft, aint gonna happen.

I’m not the biggest Zegras fan but I would tried him. Cost control and I still see upside. We have a lot of two way players, a playmaker would be great.

As of now, there literally is John Tavares in free agency this year;)

And Marner is just as good as Panarin was when he hit free agency.
Don't think either makes it to free agency but if they do, they're not signing with the Habs so not really part of the consideration I was talking about when it comes to available players.
On a serious note, I would argue that it makes sense to try to sign a veteran C to a high AAV/short term contract. No chance Tavares leaves Toronto for Montreal, but Duchene or Nelson make a lot of sense for a couple of seasons.
I don't think Nelson is signing in Canada, I could see him playing out his career in Minny.

Duchene might be a worthy gamble, but the money/term has to be right and it almost never is in free agency.

This goes back to my original point though, you're going to have to pay through the nose for these guys.

Just rather target someone via trade who is a bit younger and cost controlled.

That's me though.

Unless you want to gamble, you're going to pay through the nose for any true 2C. In salary, term, trade assets or a mix of those.

I'm a little less can convinced that Montreal's rebuild is as far along as the consensus on these boards, so I want to be a little more careful with keeping their powder dry.

But ultimately fit and logical cost is what matters.

The Habs have an excess of trade assets and any player you're targeting in a trade, you already know the financial commitment.

You're not negotiating against a free market.

So quite the same.

Agreed here, its foolish to assume that its all uphill from here. All the more reason why I don't want to go into free agency with a blank cheque.

You used to be able to add franchise building pieces in freeze agency but those days are gone. I think Free Agency is more about adding complimentary pieces.

Which you could argue a guy like Duchene would be, but you won't be paying complimentary salary IMO.

We dont have that many good assets to trade. We don’t want to include Reino or Hage. We have two mid first in a bad draft, a lot of b lvl prospects.

It’s pretty rare to see 4-5 medium assets for one real good player. I don’t want to look pessimist but I’m always trying to tell me « Would i do that deal if I’m the other team », and I dont see any teams dealing their top6 C for mid first rounder in a bad year and prospect like Mailloux. I really hope I’m wrong and Hughes fletch someone this summer, but probably wont happen.

Someone like Granlund could be interesting.

Dvorak
Armia
Pezzetta
Savard

Have not had any talks about extension. I don’t expect these guys to be back next season.

Kapanen will replace Armia and Beck will replace Dvorak.
Dach returns and Pezzetta is not NHL.

I don’t know how we can add a 2nd line center this summer but we definitely want to add a RD much like Carrier.

When was the last time you saw Zegras ?

Go watch a game and you’ll see what everyone is saying. He floats and never forecheck. Remember Alex Semin and Sergei Berezin?

The best this board can do

Crosby who doesn't want to leave Pittsburgh
Zegras overrated one trick pony not built for playoffs.

C'mon folks
Agreed. Some are not looking at the big picture. Some borderline or non-playoff teams will decide to do some level of rebuild before the draft and look to load up on prospects or draft picks. Other teams may have young centers pushing the line-up. This is where a 2C will be found.

I'd stay away from UFA Cs

The Habs have the assets to acquire one via trade.

You're mostly signing washed played to overpriced contracts in free agency

There's no John Tavares or Artemin Panarin in free agency this year.

Horvat would be a trade. He has 6 years left on his deal after this season @ $8.5M AAV.

He does has an NTC so he would have a say on any trade.
