HF Habs: Trade Proposal Thread 92 Waiting on the DRAFT Edition

As far as Ekblad and the need for a top 4 RHD are concerned, I wonder if Hutson’s performances and the right side change that perspective a little bit.

Guhle-Hutson
Matheson-Reinbacher
Struble-Carrier
Xhekaj

I would off course change Matheson for a better D but lhd are much more common and less pricey than RHD.

I don't know what's up with Matheson, but he's been terri-bad recently. I would think he'd be a prime candidate to trade in the offseason and not risk pulling a Savard and holding on to him until he's worth nothing.

Listening to team Canada reps, they still valued him and had him on their short list of replacements at the 4 Nations, so hopefully he still has some value that can be extracted.

My feeling:
he was overrated. KH should have moved him last year.
now they are stuck with him.
it would be alot worse, if habs did not have Lane H

Given what team Canada execs said about him I still have some hope he still has some value. They should move him before he doesn’t have any left if he plays like he did this year, next year.

He's not having a good season but Rasmus Andersson should be in consideration.

Some team is going to overpay Calgary to acquire him and then overpay him on a contract, and I hope its not Montreal.

I'd prefer Montreal to be the team that trades for him after that happens (a la Dubois).

If I'm looking at Calgary D, then I want Weegar. He may be 31, but he's orders of magnitude better and I'd be willing to bet his game ages very gracefully.

All-in for Dobson : Matheson, Mailloux, Roy, 1st 2025 (later one)
Sign Bennett, Duchene or Granlund for 3 years .. we need a versatile player who can play in all the situation
Trade Price after he got his last bonus to sign Dobson

We have 3 goods D in Hutson, Guhle and Reinbacher. The 2 last one can't play 20 games in a row without being injured. With Dobson we have 4 top 4 who can play between 20-25 minutes.

For the NY Islanders :
Matheson take the ice time of Dobson in short term
They add an offensive right d to replace Dobson in long term without being the same caliber
Adding J. Roy has a throw-in can be the deal breaker for P. Roy
The first pick will help them to rebuild, they are very old
They have the option to resign Matheson or trade him at the deadline for 1st and/or prospects

For Mtl :
Very costly in asset but it will be very hard to target an right elite d-man who fit the window better than Dobson. Doing the magic to fit him in the cap with the next raise of Hutson and Demidov will become an headache in the future but if Brisebois is able to be creative to manage his salary cap without many assets, Hughes can do the same with his hands full of assets. Matheson because of his value and the way he play, Mailloux we have no use for him, close to be a liability at even strength and with him its more a one man show than a team commitment; not my kind of d at all who make nobody better on the ice. If we keep them they will hurt us more than helping us in the long run, for me it's 2 dead weights and the reason I will try to trade both of them this summer when they still have value.
Would you give Duchene what's left on Kadri contract? Which is 7mx4. Both same age.

Simple he’s being used as a 1D and he’s simply hit a wall because of overuse - Matheson ideally is a 2nd pairing D

His drop off from last year is steep. He’d definitely be better served as a 2nd pairing D but Hutson has already eaten a lot of his minutes this year as did Guhle until his injury.

In any case, I think the time to move him is this off season with Hutson and Guhle as LD and bring in a top pairing RHD to take the load until Reinbacher can hopefully eventually fill the roll.

Arpon Basu had a detailed breakdown last week, how Matheson-Carrier pairing has been absorbing all the tough matchups & Dzone starts to give Hutson-Struble pairing favorable Ozone starts.

Must help explain why he leads the league in defensive zone turnovers. Needs to tidy up in his zone or swap partners because it’s not working

Would you offer sheet Vilardi? I liked him since his draft.

It would cost too much. You’d probably have to offer him 5 years at $10 million to make sure it isn’t matched (and on top of that Montreal is giving up 2 unprotected 1sts, a 2nd, and a 3rd).

Hollaway worked out

Holloway just had a season of 9 points (7 points in the playoffs). Vilardi is about to put up a 30 goal 65 point + season. There is a big difference in giving Holloway an offer sheet last offseason and Vilardi this season.

I maintain that if Montreal is going to offer sheet a RFA they have to look for players that are under utilized, on teams close to the cap, who they believe will break out. St. Louis did that with both Holloway and Broberg.

Why would you trade a great player when he is at the absolute nadir of his value and is still the best all-around defenseman on the team?

We squandered the opportunity to sell high on both him and Anderson.

I’d trade him because Habs need a RHD and the left is full up. I’d trade him because he still has some value from what hockey people are saying so May as well do it now then risk another bad year and have nothing at all like Savard.

I don’t hate hate Matheson and think he was great last year and a very capable D in this league. He’s plying too much and against top end competition which is exposing him too much. In a more sheltered system on the 2nd pairing he’d do quite well. Problem is we have Hutson and Guhle who forced him out and Habs need a top end RHD so badly right now.

So if not this offseason, when? He’s just not a fit for this team anymore.
