Zacha would be great, but just like 99% of the ideal targets, I don't see him being available. To me it seems very clear they're going with a retool and they're going to build around those core guys in their prime like Zacha, Pasta and McAvoy.

If the Rossi rumors are true then I'd be all over him though.

8 pts in 9 games is really bad yea lmfao

Twist it how you want with the secondary assits and whatever. Ive watch a lot of Sens games since he was trades and he would have been a great adition to the group. I know we didnt had a Norris to trade but to think we will get someone better with mid first rounders is kinda a dream.
Actually 2 mid 1sts worth way more than Norris. You just need to find a team that has a Cozens that wants to go full rebuild.

I'm not so such about Zacha. You have Lindholm in the same mold that is unmovable because of his contract. You also have Middlestadt and Geekie that are middle six centers. Don't think they will keep all of them.

Wasn't the story that the trade was nixed when Hage was still on the board (otherwise that pick was to be part of the deal)? I don't recall reading anything indicating that the Demidov pick was a factor.

Either way, I think the comfort lies in knowing that opportunistic talent acquisition remains a priority for this management group.... Which is a big reason why Zegras remains the most likely target this summer imo

The story was that Habs had a deal with Anaheim that included the 21st pick (and obviously other elements). It was only after Demidov was available when they were picking 5th that they decided to keep the 21st pick, which was also where they targeted Hage.

So basically it was
Option A: if Demidov is still up at 5th, we take him + we hope Hage is there at 21st (which they probably had another guy or two in that range to take).
Option B: if Demidov is gone, we take someone else we value at 5th or move back a few spots + trade 21st for Zegras.

If what Gascon reported is accurate, the Habs were walking out of the draft with either Demidov or Zegras.

Wasn't it a documentary of the draft that showed Hughes taking a phone call just before the 21st pick saying to the other GM : Yeah our guy is still there. We keep the pick?

Would mean there was another deal for the pick, even if we already did pick Demidov at 5.

In the draft behind the scenes video there was a point before the Hage pick where Hughes was talking to another GM and they had a deal in place for that pick unless 1 specific player dropped. Now we don't know if that trade was for Zegras or a different trade.

It's possible it was another GM inquiring about the 21st pick.

I just went back and looked at the video. When Hughes talks on the phone, you see the Chicago Blackhawks logo on the screens in the back, which means it was their turn to pick. Logic would indicate it was at the 18th pick, where Chicago selected Sacha Boisvert. Hughes says that there's a player they like and if he slides, they will probably take him, otherwise they would do the deal.

A few moments later, you see him let the GM know that their player (Hage) was still available. And in the background, you see the Islanders' logo on the screens. They had just picked Cole Eiserman at 20th, meaning Hage was available for Habs, who were picking next.

I'm guessing this was another GM and not Verbeek. And I'm going mainly by Gascon's word that it was after they took Demidov that the Habs were no longer looking at Zegras.

Can’t wait to see who that Cozens is. I think a lot of fans on this board are not going to be happy, espectation are so high to get a top player with giving medium assets.

I don't think we get a top end 2C. But what we disagree on is Cozens. If you see him as a top player, I don't think we can argue anymore.

Agreed, he's working really well for them. I would've like they got him. Some people on here dismissing him, but I think they're wrong.

I've watched a couple Ottawa games too. He's really making a difference out there.

Cant expect PL or demi to shine with a newhook type of C for that 2nd line
Yeah Patty is just too much a slow play kinda person to be playing with Newhook. They both slow each other down by being opposites of the same coin.

I think we need to start figuring where Laine will be playing after the next TDL. :naughty:

Considering the names that have been floated for C2, I’m interested in Pettersson. His play over the past 12 months has been atrocious but I’ve seen that EP has superstar capabilities and was responsible in his own end when he was turning it on. His 11.6M cap hit is pricy there is no doubt about it. He will also cost assets. But the thought of Pettersson/Demidov together is exciting. I do believe he is in dire need of a change of scenery. This could be a buy low on proven elite talent (102 pts in 22-23) unlike the Dach/Newhook deals.

Slafkovsky - Suzuki - Caufield
Laine - Pettersson - Demidov

OR

Slafkovsky - Suzuki - Caufield
LW* - Pettersson - Demidov

*Complimentary solid all-around winger

That is a championship level offense. Is it realistic? Who knows. But I could see Vancouver wanting to blow it up.

They are certainly not rebuilding with a 27 years old McAvoy and a 29 years old Pasternak. Poitras is having a pretty dominating first season in the AHL. They'll try to retool like they did in 2015.
