HF Habs: Trade Proposal Thread 92 Waiting on the DRAFT Edition

Concerning Mitch Marner,

How is it conceivable that the Habs could sign him for a 13 million a year, 7-year contract,

Given that Toronto has certainly already offered a 13 million a year, 8-year contract?
I'm guessing he's looking for something short to mid term, that way he can cash in on another massive contract when the cap's 110+ million.

That seemed irrationally high risk.

13×8 from Toronto gets him 104 million, then once he's 35 years old he can play for 4 million a year.

If Marner takes 2×15 from the UFA market, then 8×15, he'll make 150 million by the time he's 37. But the downside is coming much closer to 30 than 150 if he has injuries in the next two years.

High risk or not, I can't see him being happy locking up on a long term deal with the cap set to sky rocket.

I don't think there's any conceivable scenario where he signs here. He has no attachment whatsoever to Montreal. If anything, he might have an aversion.

Memba that puck over the glass unprompted penalty? Mitchie sure remembers.

I know it's crazy, but I'd give him 7 years 14 per.

Then be like Caufield and Suzuki make almost as much... combined.

If you can find a middle 6 forward, or like a number 4 who's hitting free agency as early as possible, I'd consider giving them 6, or 7 years as in 2 years you could be paying a few mill more for the same player and keep some cheap contracts so you can overpay for high end talent that become free agents.

Frankly I don't think the Habs should consider him even if he did...

The guy has unbelievable talent, but his big game struggles and issues handling the Toronto media don't bode well for him handling the pressure of being the highest paid player in Montreal as we start a run of chasing the cup.

from my point of view this is the last year of our rebuild
thats why I said build, the accumulating asset part is over, but we still need constant influx of ELC's going forward..trading multiple 1sts and prospects right now is not a good idea, you do that when your team is complete and you're a full fledge contender

Marner coming to the habs would be the ultimate f*** you to the Leafs.
I just don't see it.
I mean habs are a team on the rise and he'd be relatively close to home,
but I think he'd leave the media spotlight entirely and go somewhere like
Florida
Marner grew up a Maple Leafs fan and played all his career there. Money talks, but I have the impression Montreal would be amongst his least favorite destination.

Great to ear that HuGo realize this team needs to win while Suzuki is in his prime. Suzuki, Hutson and Demidov will be the 3 big pieces to build a Stanley cup winning team. Hoping Fowler becomes an above-average no.1 goalie and Reinbacher a top pair RHD.

Will have a great supporting cast with Slaf, Caufield, Guhle and I hope Hage.
He also knows the 2 elite players Hutson/Demidov on ELC’s won’t be bargains for long. Be nice to be able to add to the roster while they’re on bargain deals.

I get it some people here want a 2nd C until Hage is ready but we gotta make a move this summer , we cant simply wait 2-3 years until hes ready or will he be to begin with.

Duchene Granlund Schenn are not players we should be targeting first at all.

Zegras f***ing sucks , id rather sign dvorak for 900k than paying this overrated center

Crosby its all great and good but hes old . He's turning 38 this summer. That's not a move we need. I will never say he's washed but injuries and age are a thing.

William Karlsson could be interesting but his injury scares me
Kyrou is a pipedream
Bennett wouldnt need any asset for him even tho he never had 50 points once in his career and might cost 8m~
Horvat is a Prime target 3 more years at 8.5m turning 30 in 2 weeks. NYI should rebuild
Beniers could be a target , having a rough season , young player
Zibanejad could be a target 3 more years , Ranger fans hates him. Wouldnt cost alot.

Also if Hugues is not interested to give the big buck to a guy like Marner if he's testing FA. Then Hugues has no vision

Mitch Marner his PPG career regular and playoffs. Not a Center but players like him are insanely rarely available.

We could easily get Marner and trade for 1 of the center I listed.
I would love Horvat. And I think he still has 6 years left on his contract.

Marner isn't signing here. He's a die hard southern ontario Leaf boy. Grew up a Leaf fan, all his friends and family are Leaf fans. The guy would never be able to show his face in southern ontario for the rest of his life if he left the Leafs to come play in Montreal.

If you made him an offer that made him the highest paid player in the league then he might give it a second thought. If not, any offer we make him will easily be beat by most US teams based on taxes alone.

There's not a snowballs chance in hell he signs here imo.

McDavid is a free agent in a year and should be the target. He’d be Lafleur-esque in Montreal. We all saw how much he loved playing in Montreal in the 4 Nations. Molson would make his contract $ in merch sales alone.

If he goes to free agency (highly doubtful) there are 31 other teams that will move heaven and earth to get him.

Because this is the NHL, he will go to a warm tax haven away from the Canadian media. Tale as old as time.
