HF Habs: Trade Proposal Thread 92 Waiting on the DRAFT Edition

  • We sincerely apologize for the extended downtime. Our hosting provider, XenForo Cloud, encountered a major issue with their backup system, which unfortunately resulted in the loss of some critical data from the past year.

    What This Means for You:

    • If you created an account after March 2024, it no longer exists. You will need to sign up again to access the forum.
    • If you registered before March 2024 but changed your email, username, or password in the past year, those changes were lost. You’ll need to update your account details manually once you're logged in.
    • Threads and posts created within the last year have been restored.
    • Our 2025 light and dark themes were lost, so we are rebuilding them. Light theme is currently available, but work in progress

Our team is working with Xenforo Cloud to recover data using backups, sitemaps, and other available resources. We know this is frustrating, and we deeply regret the impact on our community. We are taking steps with Xenforo Cloud to ensure this never happens again. This is work in progress. Thank you for your patience and support as we work through this.

Yeah, when I was looking for trade targets a few weeks ago, i noticed all the vet 2Cs had NTC/NMC. Our best options are UFA or swinging a trade for a young 2C. This is why I really wanted Cozens at the TDL and why I want Bennett as UFA. 2C are really hard to get, and it seems most teams are looking for one.
Yeah and i don’t know how much our new management/team makes us a prime destination. But to note, Schenn switch his NMC to a NTC between this year and next. Could explain why he didn’t move a TDL in a seller Market (or they are not ready to put dvorsky 2C). Beniers do not have NTC/NMC (don’t think he is available, but kraken do have a logjam at C)

The solution at 2C is going to be Beck or Kapanen.

Teams aren't going to trade serviceable 2Cs without the team having to open up some other hole in their lineup.

UFAs are going to be asking for too much because financially, the market is the worst.

The other choice, that no one wants, is dumpster diving for a veteran 3C/4C and fitting him on the second line.

None works, except praying for Back or Kapanen.

I know about his season and about NHLe, which is why I know it's not great.

You're saying Kapanen will quadruple his production rate.

He has progressed this season, but he's not a new player.

I guess we'll see when he plays for Laval in the playoffs.
“Production rate”. lol

First 12 games on 4th line. But you know NHLe is not great. Okay.

There will be teams looking to move players this summer. There is no way that the Habs go into next season with either one of those two as the 2C.

Habs are not going into next year with Demidov and some experiment at C for the rookie from Beck, Kapanen or Dach.

At worse, they will likely play Newhook as the 2nd line C, I guess, but Demidov will need a veteran at C to develop properly.

I can only see an internal solution if they swing for the fences on a winger like Marner. They get that play-driving, defensively sound, game from the wing. Boosts top 6 talent.

Unlikely as that might be.

We've got tons of assets for a trade, I disagree and I think that it's essential for us to get a 2C that's ready to help Demidovs development

Failing to get a 2C for next year is a massive fail

Go look at the top 60 of centers in points and try to pin point those that could be available this summer. There ain’t a lot. Maybe Seattle since they have like 4 top 6 center.

None of the assets are proven enough for other teams to avoid requiring Caufield or Slafkovsky.

The pink glasses you guys wear when you look at our prospect pool are not helping.

Bennett, Duchene, Pettersson, Zacha, McCann, Schmaltz, Donato, Schenn, Kadri, ROR, Zibanejad

Lots of names are likely available

This. We just saw Cozens costing a piece like Josh Norris to acquire. I highly doubt B pieces like Roy, Mailloux or last 1st will fetch a legit 2C.

Maybe Newhook could be used if he plays better like he has lately until the end of the season tho.

And when they do... (Dach, Newhook), you can starting doubting their ability to settle in the position just as much as our own prospects.

It's UFA or stand pat for me. We weren't active enough at the TDL to evaluate other solutions imho.

Norris is nothing special and a glass body. Habs have better pieces if a team is not looking for someone to be in the NHL lineup immediately. Davidson, Engstrom etc and draft picks.

That’s because both Buffalo and Ottawa didn’t want futures. That’s a very specific situation. Habs have plenty of ammunition.

A very specific situation which applies to more than 2/3 of the league ...

You can keep hoping, I hope Beck succeeds personally, it's just more realistic.

I taught the same at first about Norris, but you are talking about a 25 years old who maintained 2C production throughout his career, we don’t have better available pieces. Davidson is only 3 years younger than him and never played a NHL game, has questionable skating. Engstrom don’t know much about, but for a team to trade an assets like a 2C usually there is another legit NHL piece involved.

Even Mittlestadt costed a piece like Charlie Coyle and not just future.

Older 2C Brock Nelson didn’t cost valued NHL assets. Target an older stop gap could be an option.

Who said anything about 23-24 year old top prospects at center

I'm talking more veterans, guys in their early 30s that are on bubble teams that would be willing to trade them for picks and prospects

I know there are factor to his production.

I'd be happy with 20-30 points next year.

Saying the expectation is 50 points is crazy.
I didn’t say I expect 50. Strawman.

I said his current season projects him to a “ballpark of 50” - using NHLe. It’s actually in the 47-49 range.

It’s “crazy” to use an equivalency model?
I’m not arbitrarily picking a number.

Or are you saying NHLe is crazy? Goes without saying it’s not perfect.

Yeah early 30 C stop gap would be more realistic for us.

They were looking for someone to be in the NHL immediately and none of the names you mentioned have as much value as Norris who, when healthy, is actually a very good top 6 player. Those two likely don't have much value at all actually.

They're not really 2Cs anymore right? Nonetheless I agree that it would fit our need. I just think other teams have as much reasons to keep them as we have to want them, meaning it will not work without involving proven assets like Norris, which would just be us doing laterals.
