HF Habs: Trade Proposal Thread #92: Waiting on the Draft edition

Tavares and Duchene are both great options. I think it would be smart to go for more of a veteran center to go with Demidov, who will need to rely on a veteran on his line to help guide him. ROR is another one, and he will still have 2 years left on his deal (although reports say he doesn't want to be traded. Unless that was for this deadline and not him simply wanting to stay in Nashville).

Tavares can't play center anymore.

With season he's having his value probably dropped more
Still, they should just hold onto him than trade him for pennies on the dollar.

The guy didn't even answer our calls last time he was a free agent. Unless we're offering him a stupid contract for a player who's declined a lot, I'm willing to bet Pyjama Boy once again won't entertain us.

Good, he's a choker no personality loser.

Well... if say two Gallaghers or Rantanen at $12M. Id take Rants. Two Nick Suzukis or Draisatl , i take two Nicks.
Along this line of thinking….

ROR + laine
or
Kapanen + Marner

Elite 1st line + kid line:
CC - Suze - Marner
Slaf - Kap - Demidov

22 yr old, PPG in SHL, on the rise … or mid 30’s C on the decline? Both project to roughly 50 pt season.

At some point people need to start questioning Hughes and Gorton’s evaluation of younger NHL players. Dach, Newhook, and possibly Zegras. That would have been three failure centre reclamation projects.

Guys like Monahan and Laine were not only more established, we were paid to take them off their teams. No-brainer moves.

I think their evalutation of Dach wasn't a bad one. The issue is he's injury prone. Because if you recall, the way Dach looked before he got hurt two years ago, and the way he looked at camp and the 4 periods he played last year, he was arguably the best player on the team.

As for Newhook, he also missed time to injury last year (who didn't?), but he had 35 pts in 55 GP, a pace of 51 pts.

Now, this year, both Newhook and Dach haven't lived up to expectations. That is true. But I don't think it's a question of not properly evaluating talent.

Regarding Zegras, you mentioned him being a center reclamation project. But when you listen to Gascon, he says when they took Demidov, they opted to nix the Zegras deal. That tells you that Zegras was not seeked as a center, but as a winger, which is what Demidov is. And as a winger, I'd take Zegras any day. Another thing that tells me Zegras was looked at bringing him in as a winger is that before the season, Canadiens still looked at Dach as the 2C.

Tavares and Duchene are both great options. I think it would be smart to go for more of a veteran center to go with Demidov, who will need to rely on a veteran on his line to help guide him. We could get Tavares and ROR. One to center the second line, the other the third line.

Dallas: seems like they will try to resign Duchene and he loves it there. I remember in the Spittin Chiclets interview, he said he didn't even know how much he signed for; he just wanted to go there. Tyler Seguin seems like the obvious guy for them to trade with that cap hit. 2x9.85. Nill is an excellent GM however so I'm sure he will manage just fine.

Vegas: surprisingly, they will have 16.7 million in cap space. They need to resign some role players (especially goaltending), but no star player. Eichel is due for a contract next offseason but don't think it'd be an issue with the rising cap (and Pietrangelo/Stone likely sign for cheap the next year). I could see them making a push for Marner in classic Vegas fashion. If they want to clear up cap space, William Karlsson is the easy target for us. We would be sending Newhook (and more) the other way since I'm sure they'd want some NHL middle 6 guy. He's got a 10 team NTC which we are likely on.

With the rising cap, I can't see many teams being desperate to get cap space anymore meaning the Laine/Monahan trades are less likely to happen. Not really sure what we can do realistically. I refuse to believe Hughes is dumb enough to add only guys like Mercer and Gralund.
Seguin could be a nice option depending on how comeback from his injury

We could get Tavares and ROR. One to center the second line, the other the third line.

I would be shocked if Habs try to get them both. IF they are able, they would do one or the other. Because the options they have for the 3C and 4C roles are Evans and one of Newhook, Beck or Kapanen.

They'll clearly prioritize the 2C spot. Because Suzuki has thew 1C. And the 3C and 4C spots are already filled up.

Good point. I think they'll go for a young guy for the last spot at center.

The only realistic target that makes sense seems to be Bennett, the rest all have their maybes. Other than that we'll ride the next season with Beck (22) and Kapanen (22).

We should sticky the Tank Thread if it goes down like that.

What about Ryan Donato?

How’s so? Yea hes not the fastest, probably not a guy for shutdown role, but hes really good at faceoff and still at PPG, great playmaker. Woulb be perfect for the 2nd line spot over a Dach but really doubt he signs here.

He's Toronto's 2C, has 55 pts in 57 games, averaging 18:26 TOI, and is 57% FOW.

How can he not play center anymore when it's all he's done his entire career and is still very good at it?

Toronto has been moving Tavares to wing constantly whenever they've gotten an option to try to put someone else in the middle. His footspeed was never great and now it's worse.

I'd also be cautious on his production, he's playing on the top PP unit and is constantly paired with Nylander.

I am most curious to see how Hughes handles Matheson this summer

My best guess is that he signs him to a ridiculous contract extension, or only trades him to a team willing to sign him to a ridiculous contract extension.

He’s one of Hughes good friends and favorite players/people. He’s still repped by his friends at his former agency.

I don’t see any situation where Hughes lets Matheson go without securing a huge pay day for Mikey and Quartexx. He’s not gonna let his boy nuke his value next season and walk as a UFA.

It’s tough because he’s obviously the odd man out with the LHD core, but if you take off ice impact into play he is one of the most untouchable guys on the team. He will be Hughes’ Gallagher.

What's a ridiculous contract extension in your opinion? IMO he's worth 6.5-7M

Both examples of - late career, staying where family is happy.

ROR, Schenn trade options.

Bennett - sounds like a potential overpayment to pry him away from a warm weather, tax favourable, location.
I'd rather overpay for a stable solution than go dumpster diving just for a few seasons.

The cap is going up dramatically why should we care about Molson's wallet?

Has any of you made a compendium on cash strapped teams, wingers and centers that could be made available ?

Dallas seems to be cap strapped. Seems like Benn will sign a team friendly deal. Duchene wants to resign and Dallas management seems to like him as well. Granlund is gone. Maybe they might need cap help, but my guess is they'll send a pick with Dumba, who we shouldn't touch.

Yeah, there's already discussion in Dallas groups that Bourque is a definite candidate to be offer sheeted unless they free up some cap by July 1st.

It looks like Benn is going to give Dallas a big discount to sign with the team & Duchene wants to stay, too.

There's also Seguin's off-season LTIR complications.

Chances are great they'll look to move both Dumba (one more year @ $3.75m) and Marchment (one more year @ $4.75m).

They'll definitely be interest in Marchment. He's a big, tough customer with 15 goals in 46 games.

Dumba they'll have to throw a draft pick at someone to take.

Cap is $95.5m next year & Dallas is already at $90.15m with 8 forwards & 5 D. They need 4 more forwards & a D for about $5m.

Something is going to happen there.

Florida has $19m to sign Ekblad & Bennett, so I think they'll resign them.

Dallas is the only team who is in a cap crunch. Everyone else has good to significant cap space.
