HF Habs: Trade Proposal Thread #91: 2025 Trade Deadline edition

Rantanen isn't signing with Carolina because he wants to process the trade. No point in paying for him as an unlikely playoff team.

Just make the big offer when he hits FA
Why not go the same route as Petry, give him a chance to taste Mtl / fanbase excitement … Petry forewent UFA twice because his wife loved Mtl.

Not sure about Rantanen’s personality or his partners, but what’s there to lose? If he doesn’t extend w Habs, they’ve freed up another $8M AAV

Because the cost is going to be prohibiting.

Or we trade for him now and Demidov joins the team in the Cup finals after his contract is over May 31st
Doesn’t a player need to be on the final roster @ trade deadline close to be playoff eligible?

Demidov doesn’t even have an NHL contract signed.

Genuine question:

Can the Canes do better than Laine for pending UFA Rantanen? Remember they’re not looking to rebuild, they want big body goal scorer NOW…

- Laine would help address Car scoring need, but will stand out as a sore thumb in Rod da Bod’s forechecking system

- Laine’s signed for another season, similar to Necas’s term

Which team can provide a big body proven goal scorer better than Laine (despite all his faults)?

A trade I would look to make, particularly for the Rocket, is go get Alex Belzile from the Rangers. He's been in the AHL at Hartford. The Wolf Pack are not in playoff position, and are quite behind. So maybe there is a deal to be made between Habs/Rangers to bring Belzile back.

Laval is decimated with injuries. And bringing back a skilled, experienced player to help would be big for Laval.

Man.........did the Canes misread that whole fiasco with Rantenen....
Guentzel revisited, except they paid considerably more this time around.

Car supposedly has the worst training facilities in the league and their locker room is apparently not even high school caliber

Wonder how much all those lack of frills impact a player like Rantanen’s decision to sign - let alone Dundon refuses to hand out signing bonuses / bonus heavy structured contracts

Demidov doesn’t even have an NHL contract signed.

If a player is on your reserve list, but signed after the TDL, they are eligible. For example, a player from the NCAA signing after the TDL once their college year is over, they are eligible. It was the case with Struble a few years ago when he signed after the TDL.

The ones who need to be on the AHL roster before the TDL are those on your NHL roster, for example Beck and Struble.

Now, it's possible a player who played in a pro league (like Demidov) might not be eligible, but a player in the NCAA, who is an amateur, is. But I'm not 100% srure on that.

Because given up asset to acquire him make us a less attractive destination for a UFA… the only thing we have is cap space, a young team and assets to improve.

Obvious guy to target. Fits the timeline well and is progressing nicely. No idea what LA's issue with him is. At the same time they're trying to sign Gavrikov long term at 29 years old.

There's no way you write off a 22 year old in his first full year in the league as a PP specialist. Mailloux is the same age and hasn't even cracked the league yet.
Always depend on the price, but it’s surely heavy. I don’t think we need a PP specialist for the 2nd PP, we got one of the best one in Hutson for the first unit + Demidov gonna need a spot on the first one next year.
