HF Habs: Trade Proposal Thread #91: 2025 Trade Deadline edition

  • Xenforo Cloud has upgraded us to version 2.3.6. Please report any issues you experience.

That is a good question to ask. Is Hughes looking to address the 2C spot by Friday or will he wait until after the season?

Habs need a C and RHD badly. While addressing it now would be great for a potential playoff push, there are fewer options, less certainty with picks to trade, and we wouldn't know what would happen in free agency, which makes the offseason the better time in nearly all cases.

I’d much rather Horvat than Barzal.

One plays the game hard, wins faceoffs and chips in with 30+ goals a year.

The other takes the puck and does 3 loops in the offensive zone on the PP.
Do you think Horvat will be an effective player as he gets older? I worry about guys with a high motor maintaining the same level of play as they age, hence my hesitation on getting him.

I would pass on that term TBH. if the Islanders blow it up I would push for Barzal.

To each their own.
I think Horvat would cost less.
But also a bias as I saw him grow as a Knights season ticket holder. Saw the progression n work ethic as a teen, character, the leadership, passion for the game n commitment.
Also knew some of the family from being involved in minor hockey n lower level Jr in the area.

I think we wait also, i cant see Kent paying the premium that teams are looking for right now.

Yeah I see him as a ROR type. And I don’t think he has as many miles on his body because he’s only been on one extended playoff run back in 2020

If we can acquire a top 6 center this summer, the team would look really good next season.

Cozens and Duchene are probably the ones that make the most sense right now.

Caufield - Suzuki - Slafkovsky
Laine - Cozens/Duchene - Demidov
Newhook - Dach - Heineman
Gallagher - Evans - Anderson

Guhle - Hutson
Matheson - Carrier
Xhekaj - Reinbacher
Struble

Monty
Dobes

Looks like a contending lineup to me
Get out Cozens out of that lineup

He's just a richest version of Dach yuck

Unless Marty knows how to whisper in his ear, I don't think Cozens is the answer...There was no point in the last 2 games where I was like, OMG we need this guy!

Its clear that 2C is the biggest need going forward, I am really looking forward to seeing how they will fill that hole. I would not object to using assets like Hage if it means we get one locked up with term.

I think there’s an opportunity to buy low on a good hockey player that could help for a few years, add a veteran presence and fill the 2C spot: Mika Zibanejad.

:habs
Mika Zibanejad (33% retained, 5.7M cap hit)

:rangers
2nd 2025
Filip Mesar

Why the Rangers do it:

  • Acquired Miller as a 1C (+ Trocheck as 2C now)
  • Heavy contract for Rangers
  • Free 5.7M on their cap (will retain 3M). Can weaponize this for UFA targets as NY has no challenge to attract players
  • Recoup some assets for a barebone prospect pool
Why Habs do it

  • Get a 31yo 2C locked at 5.7M (fits Habs salary structure) until Hage is ready (if he ever is)
  • Add Veteran to lineup
  • He has played in Canada, so he might be open to drop his NMC.
  • Keep momentum for the playoffs race. Move for now and near future.
Next year:

Slafkovsky-Suzuki-Caufield
Demidov-Zibanejad-Laine
Newhook-Evans-Dach
Heineman-UFA (1y vet)- Gallagher/Anderson

Beck gets more seasoning in AHL.

Where's this Horvat talk coming from? The Islanders might not even keep Nelson, Pageau has fallen off, and Barzal is mostly a winger. Don't see why they'd trade Horvat.

It's well known 2 games is enough to evaluate a player. Also, yesterday he got 6 hits, 5 shot attempts, positive face off stats, 2 blocked shot and 1 pass.

...for Hage to be put in play, it better be a HUGE upgrade and I really don't see one available atm...
Unfortunatly, each fan base tends to over value their prospects. Hage is a pretty good prospect with a great touching history that's fitting the Habs culture and narrative, but there is very limited chances to see him as a NHL 2C. Aka you use this asset to get a long term 2C is great.
