Yeah, I mean outside of the top 6-7-8 the odds are against you picking a talented player and they go down from there. By the time you are picking in the last part of the 1st round it may be a 20 % chance of a good player. But you still need picks and the higher the better and the more you have the better it is.
All Im saying is we have reached a point where if we unload the UFAs we have, it will no doubt cause us to drop in the standings. These guys get we are rebuilding but they are tired of losing and for purposes of development, i think the value of mid round picks and later, just isnt worth the loss of the boys learning how to fight for something bigger than just winning a single game. It will also signal the turnaround , which again is important, see Buffalo.
At this point the only UFA guy who appears to get us anything of value is Evans, and thats just a 2nd. Again, just balancing development.
but does losing 5/6 games more because we traded Evans and Armia really make a difference in our development ? i mean i get the whole point of not wanting to be like the Buffalo Sabres but personally i think our team would benefit more from trading them IF we can get a 1st/2nd i could be wrong tho this is just my personal opinionThe total calculus is as follows.
The Habs can trade Dvorak, Evans, Armia, Savard, and get back a return of approximately four 2nd round picks. The Habs get worse and the 1st pick lands in the 5-8 range rather than the 10-14 range, which also helps keep Calgary out of the top ten. Mailloux (or Trudeau, or Engstrom) and Roy likely get some NHL time.
Or ...
The Habs win a few more games, which is better for the development of the young players currently on the roster, and sends a message of support to a roster that is competing and trying to win.
I would trade Evans for a 1st.but does losing 5/6 games more because we traded Evans and Armia really make a difference in our development ? i mean i get the whole point of not wanting to be like the Buffalo Sabres but personally i think our team would benefit more from trading them IF we can get a 1st/2nd i could be wrong tho this is just my personal opinion
None of us know jack squat this is all for fun...I would trade Evans for a 1st.
What do I actually know, right ? Im just thinking that for the past few years its been sell off at TDL because we are rebuilding and not good enough and while its presented opportunities to many, its also been nothing but losing more often than not. If we sell off all the UFAs we have for not much back, then it makes it a certainty we will dive in the standings and the players will have no goal to fight for. Just thinking they need to start playing games that are important and have meaning. Good teams have players that elevate their play when its important to win and I think there are teams that just cant do that for some reason, and just keep losing.
Its also not all or nothing. If we get offered a good pick for Evans, then okay trade him and maybe keep a couple of other guys if the offers are low.
Part of this “in da mix” process is to evaluate the younger veteran players - the only way to do a proper evaluation on who can elevate their intensity / play in meaningful games is to actually play meaningful games.I would trade Evans for a 1st.

I would try moving Demidov to C or like I said in another post trade Danila Yurov (20 year old) Armia Evans and a 2nd or 3rd. Minnesota is desperate after losing Erikson-EK and have one f the worst PK's in the league, this changes that for them immediately.Get me a freaking 2C, I don't care how.
I'm not sure why we should trade Newhook or Dach at their lowest possible value just to sign Armia. This is madness imo. The guy will be 32 next season.if Evans is worth a 2nd, I have no doubt in my mind he is staying and they try to extend him. 5 X 3,5 M$.
Armia is also staying unless they can get a solid prospect if they retain 50% on his salary. I also extend him if he accepts under 3 M$ for 2-3 years.
The ones I try to upgrade are Newhook and Dach on offense and Matheson on D. Kind of players without a real identity that bring uncertainty building your roster.
Demidov-Suzuki-Caufield
Slaf-2C-Laine
Heineman-Evans-Armia
Anderson-Beck-Gallagher
Kapanen
If Armia is not extended, you plug Kapanen on the bottom 6.
If both Evans and Armia are gone, you have a spot for one of Dach or Newhook, or you sign Olivier if he is making it as a UFA.
For me, everything is on the table for the right add, except for Reinbacher and Demidov. I love Hage and hope we keep him but in a package for the right player (top pair RHD or top 6 C), he needs to be disponible imo. All 2025 and 2026 picks are disponible also and all the prospects.
Time to get to the next step.
2012 was one of the weakest draft ever and Parayko was drafted in the 3rd round along with Stephenson, Esa Lindell, Adam Pelech and Grzelcyk. Also keeping a vet who will decline and block kids for no reason is pretty useless too atm since we are a good 3 years away from something. Our group of vets is vastly overrated by fans. As soon as the kids slow down the team starts losing.Anything less than 2nd rounder is pretty useless especially in this draft… maybe more asset to move up at best.
Unless you factor in that trading will help the tank and losing a few games would help you gain 3-5 spots which is extremely valuable.
Armia, Evan and Savard need to be traded for the highest return these are useful players for playoff teams, but are not too important that it would set us back if lose them for nothing, KH can be the first to flitch.
Dvorak need to be moved regardless of the return as long as there is a return, Futur consideration would be fine.
That last retention spot could also be valuable and cap need to be maximized since this is the last year that so many team will be having cap issues, not sure retaining on one of our own player will be optimal.
This is the time to go Sam Pollock and trade for picks years away and hope the current contenders are bad by then. Trade Jake Evans for an unprotected 2028 1st. I think there is a limit now on how far away you can trade picks, but I can't find what it is.Trade anyone who's going to be UFA for 2026 picks, don't care much what it'll take or what we get.
Evans wants way too much to stay in Montreal, he's replaceable by guys like Beck and or Kapanen as a 3rd line C in fact Beck is proving he can handle 2nd line duty.I'm not sure why we should trade Newhook or Dach at their lowest possible value just to sign Armia. This is madness imo. The guy will be 32 next season.
Exactlky that's what we did with the Pens 2nd round pick and they should be bottom 10 this year which will give us a good 2nd round pick. Get picks in 2027-2028 by that time we should be ready to buy and those picks might be better and more valuable than ours. This is the time to go Sam Pollock and trade for picks years away and hope the current contenders are bad by then. I would definitely be for taking picks in 2027-28 and further, but GMs and owners usually frown on giving those away as they might not even be the ones sitting on their chair by that time. 2026 should be reasonable, if not we'll just get those picks at the draft geez...This is the time to go Sam Pollock and trade for picks years away and hope the current contenders are bad by then. Very good observation, I really hope they use that pick to select Luca Romano, watched this kid play vs my son in a ton of tournaments over the years. He's not huge but he can really play.Exactlky that's what we did with the Pens 2nd round pick and they should be bottom 10 this year which will give us a good 2nd round pick. If they trade a potential young top6 prospects, it’s not gonna be for two future ufas.I would try moving Demidov to C or like I said in another post trade Danila Yurov (20 year old) Armia Evans and a 2nd or 3rd. You can then have a second line of Laine Yurov Demidov
Obviously Montreal would need to throw more in......Minnesota doesnt have a 1st in this years draft so you could add Calgary's 1stIf they trade a potential young top6 prospects, it’s not gonna be for two future ufas.
Lebrun just said we have trouble getting a 2nd for Evans so forget about Yurov.
Is Yurov that good anyway? Stats are not really great this season.Obviously Montreal would need to throw more in......Minnesota doesnt have a 1st in this years draft so you could add Calgary's 1st
Lebrun and all insiders no nothing....they said the same about Chiarot and he got a 1st.If they trade a potential young top6 prospects, it’s not gonna be for two future ufas.

Yurov was hurt and is having ankle surgery, he put up similar numbers to Demidov at the same age last year. He should be back for the KHL playoff and says here may even play in the AHL playoffs this year. The kid is good, I have watched him play (IPTV). He's got what it takes, its always about how they adapt to North America. Is Yurov that good anyway? Stats are not really great this season.
My bet is Hughes gonna go after a more proven C, not a prospect.
This has been the issue with this team all year. The drop-off after Suzuki is massive and it can't continue. We need a 50 point guy to take over that spot, someone good at the dot and responsible defensively as well.Get me a freaking 2C, I don't care how.
It’s actually been an issue for the past 30 years - and during most of those years we barely had a #1C let alone a #2This has been the issue with this team all year.
