HF Habs: Trade Proposal Thread #91: 2025 Trade Deadline edition

  • Xenforo Cloud has upgraded us to version 2.3.6. Please report any issues you experience.
How i see our lineup for next year:

Caufield - Suzuki - Slaf
Laine - X (acquired via trade) - Demidov
Gallagher/heineman - X (acquired internally) - Anderson
Gallagher/heineman - Evans - Armia (only if he signs for cheap)
Dach and Newhook are both still signed for next year.

Decisions have to be made and I hope it involves finding a true 2C. I would like to see us make room for Kapanen and Beck full time next year.

I am down for giving Dach another shot until his current contract runs out. But his leash is ultra short next year. I am okay with Newhook as well. But, Anderson and Gally both have contracts that are difficult to move. Ideally we find a way to move on from Gally. But - he still scores and his a heart guy.

I am so torn.

Caufield - Suzuki - Slaf
Laine - legit #2C - Demidov
Heinemen - Beck - Dach
Anderson - Evans - Newhook
Gally/Kapanen

Okay....this is how it should work out.

1) We need to sign a #2C - Bennett, Tavares, Duchene

2) We need to make a trade for a top 4 RD. Gally and Kapanen are my preferred pieces plus picks. If a team wants a centre -- Beck or Dach are available as well. Evans would be, but I doubt we trade him after the sweetheart deal. If Beck is the piece - Dach lines up at centre on third line. If Dach is moved - we can keep Beck at centre and move newhook up and then Kap to 4th line.

Bottom line - IF we look for that #2 - which I hope we do - we need to move some pieces. We can't let Kap and Beck percolate anymore in the minors. The pieces we do move should be for that top 4 RD.

Hage needs to stay in the system for eventual takeover of our #2C spot when the signee starts to age out.

If they hadn't blown equivalent-value picks on Dach and Newhook, Hage wouldn't be a must-retain.

Even now Hage isn't a "must-retain" prospect. That would be Demidov.

And I am not the biggest Newhook/Dach fan, but they are still serviceable players even now, and were both fine acquisitions when Hughes tried to get them, with a lot of upside still.

As for our prospects, well, if a nice deal comes along, where we can acquire an impactful player that would be with us long-term, basically nobody save Suzuki, Caufield, Slafkovsky, Hutson, and Demidov should be "off-the-table".

Of course, the player(s) we'd acquire this way would have to be quite valuable if we're trading Hage/Reinbacher/Fowler types vs. picks and/or lesser prospects, but if the "fit" is right with our team quality and age-wise then our management shouldn't hesitate.

I keep reading about how this or that 35 year old center can be a bridge to Hage. Reminder: Hage is 18. There are only a few centers (Hughes, Bedard, Stützle) who are elite before the age of 23-24. And a handful more who could be considered true 2Cs before their mid-20s.

There is no such bridge. We need a true 2C by the start of next season; one who will be in that role for years.
Plus banking that everything will somehow go well in the development of a 21st overall pick isn’t exactly smart team building. He should be a bonus that forces you to make a move if the time comes, not a crutch you lean on.

I did forget about newhook (so i guess Armia is as good as gone), and yes Beck could be our 3C. In any deal for 2C/top4 D I would try to include Dach. He is not that good (when healthy) and is super unreliable. Newhook isn't anything to write to home about at least he's a speed demon. I would love to get bennett, he's exactly the type of player we need, good offensive output and plays with grit. Also, he fits our window age-wise. I would open up the bank vault for him.

Would you trade Hutson straight up for a 2C - say, Byfield?
No. Lane Hutson and Cole Caufield are two players that are part of the fabric of the team. It would take a very special player for me to move one of them.

Hage, Reinbacher and Fowler ARE untouchable. Fowler might be movable if they don't think he is capable of being a #1 but they would have to find a #1 then.

Could there be a deal with Dallas coming? Armia going and Mavrik Bourque coming back??
Is this a deal you saw mentioned somewhere or just wishful thinking?

Mav really hasn't taken off but I don't know if that is because of a lack of opportunity. He was always a talented kid

What is Bourque's ceiling. He is 23 years already and only has 21 pts in 56 total NHL games. I know he played well in the A and is held back by Dallas' depth. How good could this guy get?

It would have to be David Savard. Look at their right side. Lybushkin, Ceci and Dumba for a cup contending team is pretty terrible.

I think you'd have to add more, maybe Savard + 3rd.

Bourque has been playing on the Stars 4th line as a wing lately.
