Anyone but Newhook..........worth a try, Andy has actually played pretty well. He has become avery good PK guy.......yes he makes too much $$$ but he has brought a few things to the table this season.

Xenforo Cloud will be upgrading us to version 2.3.5 on March 3rd at 12 AM GMT. This version has increased stability and fixes several bugs. We expect downtime for the duration of the update. That would leave us with no centers. Newhook would have to move to center, and they'd have to recall Beck at minimum, which is why I don't see them trading both. You still need to ice a team to finish the year.
I find it strange that Carolina would trade for Rantanen without having an extension in place. As this plays out, I wonder if Rantanen has no intention of signing an extension with any team and plans to test FA. Makes me think Colorado knew that and that’s why they dealt him.

I'm not saying trade for him.
And the previous poster mentioned acquiring Rantanen after the season, which a sign and trade there also costs nothing near Cole Caufield.
It's not another team's fault they traded for Rantanen without knowing what he'd want to do, or are willing to overpay to keep him.

Almost certainly the case that Rantanen is looking to hit the FA market without any compromise.
Officially, he didn't accept or refuse, and that's according to Friedman.
There's just a bunch of rat pundits who want to pressure in their opinionated position as usual.

No you trade Evans and Dvorak. I would keep Evans if he wasn't asking 4mx6 years. Dvorak needs to go. For anything, as long as he's gone. I find that scenario of Suzuki and Dach both injured ridiculous and nonsense. We might be the only nhl team with scenario like that. I can't imagine Avs, Bruins, Oilers and Stars fans having that horror movie scenario and wanting to keep a bad center just in case of, especially when younger and better centers are on the way to take the place.
I think both need to be traded, for two different reasons. One because he's getting old and ask for too much money, he's getting a late first round in return. The other one just sucks at anything except winning FO and he's very overpaid. Habs will need to get a good ufa center or trade to get a good one anyway. It's like if that was already done. This is a MUST! And Beck is coming for sure. Then we have maybe another one from Laval and we have Kapanen.

Which would be silly. If Carolina offered him $100m, we can assume at minimum that they offered him $12.5m x 8.
Rumours are he wants $14m. But, if he gets to UFA, he can only sign a 7 year contract. $14m x 7 is $98m. He would need a team to sign him to $14.5m to get above Carolina's number. That puts him at $101.5m.
How many teams are really going to offer him that? He's not as good as the players who are making $14m+.
He & his agent really screwed themselves because I'm pretty sure Colorado offered $12.5m and traded him after he said no. Carolina is basically offering him the same contract.
He should learn from other players like Klingberg and take the guaranteed money from a good team.

Good points but maybe the Canes aren’t giving good bonus money which makes a significant impact in terms of dollars and cents

There's nothing ridiculous about a Habs team suffering tons of injuries.
Suzuki is already injured according to many.

He might also be thinking about take a 2 year contract somewhere and then potentially going for a 7 year deal at 16 mill per.
I think with the known cap projections players and agents will be scheming as best they can to maximize their earnings.
Looks like a team like Dallas will have a lot of cap space and they're in a favourable state, moreso than North Carolina.
Then there's the likelihood of Carolina, or whichever team has him after the deadline helping to facilitate a trade in which he gets an 8th year and the team that had him gets some sort of assets back for that 8th year.
Then he might be considering deferred payments on either a long-term deal, or short-term deal. Use the money from the short-term deal and push it down the road and then sign a long-term contract at big money, not losing any of it now and still having that pay day coming after your career is over.
So much could be going on.
Or maybe he just didn't want to go to Carolina/stay there.

100% end up like Klingberg, or like Hall.
It is something that the free agents are considering and it's why i sort of hope the Habs gun for one of the better free agents.
Rantanen's limited play away from MacKinnon is concerning, but landing him, or Marner now would be amazing.
Especially when you consider a similar player in Kaprizov will likely cost you a mill, or 2 more and 2 years from now a similar player you could be looking at 4 mill more per season.
It's possibly the best year to sign free agents as their deals will look like fair deals in short order.

Not sure why people are so desperate to ship Evans out. We need centers that can actually play and play decently. If we ship out Evans who replaces him? Another rookie? We need people with experience on this team we can't just have a team full of rookies all the time. What if an injury happens to one of top two line centers? then we are stuck scrambling trying to find a replacement or forcing one of the prospects that aren't ready up.
You've answered your own question. We're all anxious to see if the prospects we follow can replace him and do better.

I do think it makes sense for Hughes to try and drastically overpay a good player for two years.
But I don't anyone will bite.

It sounds like they're not close in negotiations. No one wants to ship him out, but if his agent thinks he can do better in UFA then we might as well trade him for assets.

Might take a year or 2 but Beck 100% will replace Evans...with more offensive upside too.

Sorry I didn't mean for 2 years, I mean in 2 years because of how much the cap is going up that 7 year, X amount dollar contract will look fair just because youre paying a few extra million for a similar player.
I'm not even sure if he will *replace* him. I think he'll be better and replaces Dvorak. We have Kapanen too who will definitely play the NHL.
I'd be more looking at Davidson or Florian to replace Evans' fourth line centering.

And because he might have a small injury (like 40% of players) Habs have to sign Evans 4mx6 years or keep/ sign Dvorak?
I was thinking most habs fans here agreed about how to proper rebuild and now you come with short term problem and solution, forgetting the long term plan.
I think this season is done anyway and we have to focus on the next summer and the years to come. Habs are turning a corner and tanking is still on the agenda. Unless they win the next 5 games.

They need spots for youngsters moving up and hopefully add some solid veteran experience. Next year try to move Anderson, Gally and Matheson and repeat.
This team needs to get better players, more veterans and more depth then current so the can insulate new kids coming and support/supplement existing core. At a minimum they’re bringing in Demidov, Beck, Kapanen, Mailloux and Reinbacher next year at one point or another. Not to mention players who may be pushing for spots like Tuch, Roy, Xhekaj as well. Also, with all the cash and prospect/picks, Habs will undoubtedly try to land a big fish or two via trade and/or UFA markets.
Too many players they need to rotate out to make space for better players.
