If Rantanen does that he's tanking his value on the UFA market.

He needs to prove that he can produce without MacKinnon.
You didn't follow the logic: Hurricanes trade Rantanen to Florida, Rantanen meets Hurricanes in the playoffs and sends them golfing.

One very good reason he isn't traded out of Raleigh.

Hearing lots of chatter over past few days that Rantanen doesn't want to stay in Carolina long term even if they give him his money.

Really hope Habs have a chance. Would be easiest way to improve our offence without losing any assets

I wonder why?

So far Canes have had issues retaining UFAs they trade for, but are able to resign their own players.

It’s the UFA premium they dont like paying. Habs did them a favour with Aho, but they were fine to let Guentzel, Teraveinen, Pesce etc. go rather then pay them market value. Looks like the same going to happen with Rantanen.

Canes are not a well respected organization amongst players either which doesn’t help.

At a hotel in downtown Montreal and I’ve run into 3 Capitals scouts for some reason which is odd because they don’t play the Habs again this season. Take that as you will, really random.

Perhaps they did so well with playoff warrior Lars Eller that they now want to offer a pair of second round draft picks for Jake Evans :-)

Win -win for both teams.

At the same time who would they be scouting other than Laval if they are here? They surely aren’t going to make judgments based on the Habs skills competition tomorrow.

Weren’t the Caps one of the teams most interested in Evans?

I think they were rumoured to already have offered a 2nd.

Seems risky to give that much that long to someone who produced next to MacKinnon.

How much will he produce in his 30's.

I would love to get Rants but we have no center for him to play with. There also doesn't seem like a 2nd line center is out there unless you are willing to give up pry away value for Ryan out of Nashville.

I think he's seeking like 14 mil per year. Now that the cap has gone up more than expected, I am guessing 16 or 17 mil per year. Whether a team gives him that remains to be seen

They should just offer Ryan Chesley and sign the deal

I had been advocating heavily for us to trade for Bennett for a while before he was moved, and I don't recall ever seeing any credible reports that we were in the mix... Despite the obvious fit & need.

Cost was essentially 2*2nds (Heineman being one, ironically). We could have easily beat that back in '21.
Flames have made some bad trades in recent years. Bennett was traded year we went to Finals. I doubt Bergevin was in on that trade as his roster was mostly set.

They lost many of their own players too, Nino, Turbo, Trocheck, Foegele, there are others I can't remember right now.

Just the top guys they hold like Aho and Slavin and KK

Even their coach it was a drama to sign him when it was clear he wanted to stay and they had to keep him.

Some of you guys are vastly underestimating Rantanen and this makes his price drop by 1M and number of suitors even better. I take Rantanen at 12M over Bennett at 9M AINEC

One potential UFA center gone.

Would have been a good replacement for our center UFAs but he's bad at faceoffs

If Carolina panics and is forced to make the trade.

Laine + Evans + Calgary 1st 2025 and Habs 1st 2026.

Rantanen - Suzuki - Demidov
Caufield - Dach - Slaf

Trading Evans for the Capitals 43rd overall pick and drafting Cole Hutson would have been a genius move.

How do we avoid the KK over Tkachuk debacle again: don't draft for need, draft for talent.

You do it for ability to sign him for 8 years? Otherwise don't see much of a point. He saw how great fans are and the facilities over the 4 nations. I'm sure a legend like Saku or fellow Armia and Lehk can sell the city to him

With both of those players, it's not so much the cap hit that is the concern, it's how they'll play in years 5, 6, 7, and possibly 8 of the contract, at that cap hit. In Rantanen's case, that's when he's 33, 34, 35, and 36 years old.

How many players of that age range are in the top 20 in NHL scoring right now? Zero.

Crosby is the first 33+ year old, at 22nd in the league in scoring. 33 year old Panarin is 24th. 34 year old Matt Duchene is 27th. Turning 33, but still 32 year olds Mark Stone and Granlund are then tied for 40th. That's it for the top 40. And how will those players be at 34, 35, 36, and 37?
