I genuinely believe it is the losing culture

And I’m genuinely worried about the Habs falling into this pit of despair if they don’t make efforts to force a culture change and keep it moving in the right direction.

Our year on year pt% improvement will likely hit a screeching halt this year. The regression can be bad news if Hughes doesn’t make serious efforts to reinforce the team and convince the roster that they have an upcoming season for which it is worth training and playing hard.

It’s hard to move forward when three of five top6 forwards move backward and a fourth top6 is a broken down capdump.

Next year’s team has to be different

I think Ivan Demidov and to a lesser extent David reinbacher are going to make a massive impact on this team. Im starting to believe this draft is very underrated and there are some gems to be had where we may be picking.

Just praying for a stroke of luck in the lottery or to have two first picks that are high enough to be packaged to move up and get an impact player. Still praying for Michael Misa

Nice stats? Along with Joe Thornton there might be around 3-4 other players at most in NHL history able to transform Jonathan Cheechoo into a 56 goals scorer. Joe Thornton is 32nd all time for the most games played in playoffs. Other guys failed to deliver. One of Joe's biggest problem was that he tranformed average middle six wingers into solid first liners and he never had a GM able to make the difference between a Joe Tornton boosted winger and a real good winger. It's one thing to carry Ryan Clowe and Cheechoo in regular season but it's another thing to do it in playoffs when you face the best defense all nights and they have a dedicated game plan for you and that game plan is simple and it is let Cheechoo do what he wants and send 3 guys on Big Joe.
He was partially responsible for Sharks never winning a Cup. He refused to shoot which is why it was so easy to stop the SJ PP once opposing coaches finally got a brain. Cover the other 4 guys and forget about Thornton because he would never go to the net or shoot (and he had a big shot). Cheechoo would have been a big scorer with any decent playmaking centre. He knew where the open spots were like a Brett Hull.

It's a competitive league and thus not every great player wins a Cup. Joe Thornton is like Carey Price and Jarome Iginla in that sense. Also Adam Oates, Mike Gartner, and Cam Neeley. And so on.

Makes sense, they were going to move him only if initiating a rebuild, or maybe Conroy will change his mind next season.
The Flames need LD's would be nice if we could trade them Matheson.

Although they're not rebuilding, more resetting, hard to see them giving up a 1st for a soon to be 31 year old.

If guhle wasn't out I'd entertain moving matheson. Instead maybe look to do that at the draft packaged with picks to move up or get a C/RD.

The choice for Hughes is matheson or savard. There's no way you can deal both unless you have acquired an absolute stud RD.

Optimal would be to deal both Matheson and Savard out as rentals (at a premium 'rental' price vs on-ice value) and in parallel acquire Dobson (hockey trade done with more-or-less fair value).

I don't mind Matheson at all, in fact I think he's a very good player on the second-pairing but like Jake Evans I think priorities go in order and we need a top-pairing before we need a second-pairing. Matheson's age doesn't scream "must retain" so I would consider putting his name out there for sure. Plenty of contenders could pay a lot for Matheson -- the likes of MIN or EDM for instance.

Matheson wouldn't be a rental with a year after this one still on his contract.

Unless you meant trade Savard now and Matheson next year?

Imo, we don't need a "stud" RD.

We need a guy that can hold the fort beside Lane so he can do his thing out there. We need a defensively stable RD that can skate. We don't need a tonne of points from that player, we need a guy that can make a 20ft pass over to Lane or up to the winger along the wall. We need this type of player for 2-3 years until Reinbacher is ready to take over that spot.
So, another Carrier?

I count Matheson even this year as a rental.

His caphit is low, so for example: a team that is competitive and has important UFAs and RFAs coming up for renewal in 2026 would consider Matheson as a rental.

I don’t see Hughes selling him this year anyway so we’re basically bullshitting all the same.

Some of you didn’t my watch much of the 4 Nations tourney I guess. Petey sucked. He was the suckiest suck of all sucks.

You could also say.. he Petered out.

He is NOT the same dude pre-injury. The only thing going for him is his GF. She is a winner.

He's the winner, she's the trophy.

If he is that bad and i tend to agree from what i have seen lately could be a bargain pickup .Oh and you can't say his GF is hot without pictures.

Yeah, someone along those lines. A player that's efficient defensively and won't break the bank. Management has high hopes for Reinbacher but I also believe they know they'll need to be patient with him since he's just missed a year of development.

I know it was kind of a running joke but yes, someone like a Kovacevik could be that player. Nothing special at either end but solid and once Reinbacher is ready to take over that spot beside Lane, move Kova down to play with Arber.

Kind of dissapointed with the lack of movement across the league but specifically from us. Looks like we’ll have to wait for March 7th
